THIS WEEK'S PRODUCE
Bell Peppers are starting to turn red. Orangeglo watermelon is here with it's spunky orange flavor! Heirloom tomatoes are flushing this week and we are offering specials on multiple pound purchases! The first of the striped yellow and orange Kellogg's are now ripening.
Equally as exciting is the appearance of the famous Faye Elberta peach. Here's the story behind this amazing variety that miraculously due the work of growers like Tyson Hill Farm we still can enjoy today.
FAYE ELBERTA PEACHES ARE IN!! The classic run-down-your-arm peach!! Indira from Tyson Hill Farm speaks fondly of this peach that is now on the Slow Food's list of endangered fruits: "Fayes are no longer a standard cannery-run peach nor are they shipped, as they once were, by the train load from Stanislaus and Merced Counties to eastern markets. (Imagine how green these delicate fruit must have been picked to survive the transcontinental journey in those days before refrigerated box cars.) When we wanted to replant our Faye Elberta trees 15 years ago, we couldn't find a nursery that was selling this variety anymore. Burchell Nursery in Oakdale propagated our trees on a special order. However, Fayes have since become commercially available thanks to the increase in farmers' markets."

RECIPE of the week
BAKED RED PEPPER FRITTATA
2 Red Peppers 3 TSP olive oil 2 onions, peeled and thinly sliced 6-8 eggs 2 TBS chopped Italian parsley 2TBS chopped basil leaves Salt & pepper Butter for baking dish 6 TBS breadcrumbs, divided ½ cup fontina cheese
Core, seed and julienne the peppers. Place the olive oil in a medium sauté pan. Add the peppers & onions and sauté until the vegetables soften and are lightly golden. Let cool. Beat eggs lightly with a fork. Add pepper &Onion mixture, herbs & salt & pepper to taste. Butter a 10-inch round baking dish & sprinkle with 4 TBS breadcrumbs. Pour the egg mixture into baking dish and sprinkle with cheese. Top with breadcrumbs. Bake in 375oF oven for 20 minutes or until frittata is slightly puffy and firm. Serve hot or warm.
Steamed Artichokes
Select artichokes with tightly closed leaves whenever possible. To wash, hold by the stem end and dash up and down quickly in a deep bowl or sink basin of water. To prepare for steaming, cut off the stem and trim the top of the artichoke by one-fourth. Using a pair of kitchen shears, cut the thorny tip (about a ½ inch) from the remaining large, outer leaves. This will allow the steam to penetrate the inner meat of the artichoke leaves and heart. Snap off the tough bottom row of leaves by bending them back from the core and discard. Place the artichokes top down in a steamer over 2 - 3 inches of water. To the water you may want to add a variation of items for flavor. My favorite way is to place 4 to 6 whole peeled garlic cloves, one bay leaf, a whole lemon sliced, and about 15 - 20 whole peppercorns. Steam the artichokes over the water with a tight fitting lid for about 30-45 minutes or until tender. You may cool and chill the artichokes or eat hot straight from the steamer with melted butter or mayonnaise for dipping the leaves. Enjoy!
