New Information about Sunday's Picnic
Our annual church picnic will be held this Sunday, August 14, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Rotary Shelter in Steele Creek Park. We have some new information since the last newsletter: You will need to bring $2 for admission to the park. If it rains, we will gather in the church Fellowship Hall.
The shelter is on the left, not far from the park entrance. Seating is limited, so you may want to bring chairs and blankets. FPC will provide hotdogs and bottled water, and we will eat at 5:30. Please bring one of the following dishes with you, according to the initial of your last name:
Last name beginning with

I-P
Q-Z
Please bring

1 salad
We look forward to sharing fellowship, fun, and food with you!

Welcome Our Interim Pastor
PCUSA seal small After a long search, we have hired an interim pastor! The Reverend Dr. Stuart Thomas Wilson will begin his work with FPC on Saturday, October 1, and deliver his first sermon during ONE Worship on World Communion Sunday, October 2. Here he introduces himself:
Come, Celebrate the Journey!
With grateful anticipation, I await our life and ministry together in the Lord. Serving as your Interim Pastor is a responsibility, and a gift that weaves us into a mutual calling of intrinsic worth.
Your Interim Pastor Search Committee has worked prayerfully and diligently. I am thankful to have had the opportunity of getting to know them and others, and I am grateful to have been warmly introduced to you, the members of First Presbyterian Church of Bristol.
I'd like to share with you some reflections on my family background, childhood nurture, and service to the church, along with a snapshot in words of the Wilson clan. I was born on January 11, 1952, in Norfolk, Virginia, which was my home for the next 22 years. My father (who died in 2015) was Thomas Benjamin Wilson, a native of Norfolk and a Marine fighter pilot in World War II. After his military service, he started his own business and became a general construction contractor. My mother (who died in 2014) was Katrina Jane Styers of Rural Hall, North Carolina. She attended business college and worked in civil service before she and my father were married. They had four sons: Duane, Stuart, Ben, and Lance. The two youngest, Ben and Lance, are deceased. After the boys were out of the nest, my mother was employed as the manager of a women's specialty shop that attended to the needs of breast cancer survivors. She became an avid participant in a local chapter of the American Cancer Society, under whose auspices she gave talks and comforted patients. My mother and father were Presbyterian elders, actively involved in their home church for 30 years.
I was raised in a Presbyterian congregational family of faith. My childhood was graced with worship, Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, and children's choir. I was encouraged to memorize several psalms, the Ten Commandments, and the Beatitudes. I creatively proclaimed Biblical stories in word, print, and picture through weekly lessons that I kept in my personal notebook. Those richly colored messages, along with the empathic images of my Sunday School teachers, still linger with effect.
I've received the following degrees: Bachelor of Arts (1974), Master of Divinity (1978), and Doctor of Ministry (1994). I wrote a book, Sketching a Scheme: A Friendship Model of Ministry as a Mediating Structure, that was published in 2005 by University Press of America. During 38 years in parish ministry, I have served churches in Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama, and Pennsylvania. Thirteen years ago, I felt called to and received specialized training for interim ministry.
My interim training is as follows: Interim Ministry Week One, Interim Ministry Network, Jacksonville (2003); Interim Ministry Week Two, Montreat (2005); and Advanced Interim Training Week Three, Montreat (2007), where I was invited to join the faculty of interim ministry instructors. I am committed to the unique tasks of transitional ministry. I also trust God to grant us its unique blessings.
My wife, Babbs, is my best friend. During the empty nest season, Babbs presides over the Home Place, enjoys our two dogs, a cat, and four horses, serves on the Christian Education Committee of First Presbyterian of Wadesboro, and teaches children on Wednesday evening and Sunday morning.
We have four sons and a daughter. The Wilson family includes Nate and Kate, with grandson Camden and granddaughter Sydney; Adam and Brittany, with grandson Emery; Caleb; Hannah and Austen; and Ethan.
In our Presbyterian Hymnal, #430 is "Come Sing, O Church, in Joy!" May its inviting refrain be our winsome way together:
In Bold Accord, Come Celebrate the Journey Now, and Praise the Lord!
In Christian love,
Stuart
Nominate Elders and Deacons by Aug. 22
FPC is looking for persons with the gifs, characteristics, and experiences that make for effective service as church officers. We are beginning the process of nominating church officers for the coming year, and we welcome your suggestions of those members whom you see as particularly gifted for serving as elders or deacons. We ask that you submit names as soon as possible, and no later than Monday, August 22. For the next two weeks, nomination forms will be in late-service bulletins and on seats in the Fellowship Hall. Feel free to consult any member of the 2016 Church Officer Nominating Committee for more information. They are Chuck Thompson (Chair), Scottie Bales, Andrew Beck, Beth Flannagan, and Heidi Harkleroad.
The Duties of Elders
The Book of Order, G-6.0304, states: "It is the duty of elders, individually and jointly, to strengthen and nurture the faith and life of the congregation committed to their charge. Together with the pastor, they should encourage the people in the worship and service of God, equip and renew them for their tasks within the church and for their mission in the world, visit and comfort and care for the people, with special attention to the poor, the sick, the lonely, and those who are oppressed. They should inform the pastor and session of those persons and structures which may need special attention. They should assist in worship. They should cultivate their ability to teach the Bible and may be authorized to supply places which are without the regular ministry of the Word and Sacrament. In specific circumstances and with proper instruction, specific elders may be authorized by the presbytery to administer the Lord's Supper. ... Those duties which all Christians are bound to perform by the law of love are especially incumbent upon elders because of their calling to office and are to be fulfilled by them as official responsibilities."
The Session of First Presbyterian Church is composed of fifteen elders who serve on a three-year rotation. Dottie Havlik is the current Clerk of Session; Dave Welch serves as Moderator. The following are our current elders:

The Book of Order, G-6.0402, states: "It is the duty of deacons, first of all, to minister to those who are in need, to the sick, to the friendless, and to any who may be in distress both within and beyond the community of faith. They shall assume such other duties as may be delegated to them from time to time by the session, such as leading the people in worship through prayers of intercession, reading the Scriptures, presenting the gifts of the people, and assisting with the Lord's Supper."
The Board of Deacons of First Presbyterian Church is composed of fifteen members who serve on a three-year rotation. The following are our current deacons:

Family Promise of Bristol Needs Volunteer Drivers
Family Promise of Bristol is looking for volunteers to drive the families in its program to and from host churches, in its 15-passenger van. Drivers must be at least 18 years old but do not need a special license. The main need is for a weekday driver to arrive at the host church at 6:30 a.m. and take the family back to the Family Promise Day Center. The program can also use drivers on the weekends or evenings.
If you are interested in volunteering to drive one day a week, five days a week, or as needed, please call the Family Promise of Bristol office at 276-494-0388. More information about the organization is available at www.familypromiseofbristol.org.
Thank You from Family Promise
We have received a letter of gratitude from Angie Sproles, the director of Family Promise of Bristol:
Thank you hosting our family for the week. The family enjoyed their time spent with you, sharing time and meals together. Thank you to the volunteers who spent the night! We are blessed by the commitment and support of Family Promise.

pebble-size landscaping stones are available on both sides of the main entrance to the church. Take any quantity and help the church clear this area for mulching and additional plants. For questions or help, call Tom Daniel at 423-764-7677 or email him at tomdaniel60@charter.net
Decisions, Decisions
It's hot, it's humid, it's dry, it's raining a little, what's a mower to do? We are so grateful to have faithful volunteers to whom we can safely leave that decision! Larry Connolly and Roger Sikorski are scheduled to mow in the third and fourth weeks of August, so we don't have to worry about it at all.
If you would like to help mow the church lawn, Randy Cook will be happy to give you a lesson on our Scag mower. We welcome adults and teens, men and women for what we hope will be regular duty. If you can help us for even a single morning or afternoon, please email Randy at npolecook@aol.com or call his cell at 423-956-1541. Thank you!

Music Notes
Sunday's music participants: Sanctuary Choir.
Sunday's music: The Sanctuary Choir anthem at the 11:00 service was inspired by 1 Timothy 6:12, "Fight the good fight of the faith; take hold of the eternal life, to which you were called and for which you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses." Rather than a call to military action, J. S. B. Monsell's hymn text "Fight the Good Fight" is a charge to face the challenges of life with vigor and energy. An Irish-English clergyman (who died as the result of a fall from the roof of his church undergoing rebuilding!), Monsell (1811-1875) wrote a number of hymn texts, but this has remained his most popular. It serves as the basis for the anthem in a setting by Alfred V. Fedak (b. 1953).
Alfred V. Fedak
Since 1990 Fedak has served as Minister of Music and the Arts at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Albany, NY; he has an extensive catalogue of compositions, performs frequently as a recitalist, and served on the committee of the PCUSA, which prepared Glory to God: The Presbyterian Hymnal.
Rehearsals resuming: More rehearsals are gearing up for the new program year! Children's Handbells and Savior's Singers Children's Choir (both for children in grades 2 through 6) will begin Wednesday, August 17, with bells at 4:15 p.m. and choir at 4:45 p.m. Also that day, the Youth Bell Choir (grades 7 through 12) will begin rehearsing at 4:45 p.m. As a reminder, our Wednesday night fellowship suppers and programs following won't resume until after Labor Day, so children and youth may be picked up at 5:30 p.m. the first three Wednesdays. Jubilate Youth Choir (grades 7 through 12) will kick off the program year in conjunction with Student Ministries Fellowship, on Sunday, August 21, with choir at 5:15 p.m. and youth activities at 6:00 p.m. Sanctuary Handbells (college students, adults, and advanced high schoolers) will begin rehearsals on Monday, September 12, at 5:30 p.m.
Sunday's Guest Preacher: Paul Warhurst
Paul Warhurst

Paul Warhurst is an FPC elder and a Senior Lecturer in New Testament and Theology at King University. He did his PhD work at the University of St. Andrews on Søren Kierkegaard's writings on the Sermon on the Mount and, impressively, did not neglect his golf game. When he isn't teaching, Paul enjoys being with Amber and their children, hiking on the Appalachian Trail, drinking coffee, and occasionally working on his house.
