Sunday Is Rally Day
Rally Day is this Sunday, August 7. Everyone is invited to the Fellowship Hall at 10:00 a.m. to learn what's in store for the new church school year. This will be Promotion Day for our children, whose teachers will take them to their new classrooms. The adult Sunday School classes will resume August 14, when all classes return to the normal 9:45 start time. Come celebrate the lively Christian education programs at FPC!
Congregational Meeting to Elect PNC Aug. 14
The congregation will meet to elect a Pastor Nominating Committee Sunday, August 14, at 10:20 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall. The Church Officer Nominating Committee (Chuck Thompson, chair; Scottie Bales; Andrew Beck; Beth Flannagan; Heidi Harkleroad) will bring forth a slate of candidates to be approved and elected by the congregation. Please make plans to be there to cast your vote!

Changes to Our Schedule
Change continues to be an ongoing theme for us at FPC. Change is exciting and energizing, and it brings new opportunities of which we may have been unaware.
By now you have heard that our much-loved Food Service Coordinator, Ruthie Blair, has secured a new job and will no longer be cooking incredible meals for us on Wednesday nights. The Personnel Committee is already responding to this change by scheduling interviews with applicants for that position, but until the right person is identified and hired, we will follow this plan:
  1. We will delay the start of our fellowship dinners until Wednesday, September 7, fully expecting we will have someone in place by then. Adult programs will resume the same evening.
  2. Children's Bells, Savior's Singers Children's Choir, and Youth Bells will begin rehearsals Wednesday, August 17.
  3. Children's Ministries will continue with their summer Fun Family Fellowship programs August 10 and 24 (Wednesdays) at 5:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall.
  4. Student Ministries will continue High School Devos on Wednesdays from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at Katie Arnold's home. Middle School FISH will continue to meet in different homes on Tuesdays from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. until the fellowship dinners begin.
As always, if you have a question, please call the church office at 423-764-7176 or send an email to Lilly Osborne (Children's Ministries) at losborne@fpcbristol.org, Katie Arnold (Student Ministries) at karnold@fpcbristol.org, Steve and Vicki Fey (Music Ministries) at svfey@fpcbristol.org, or Dave Welch (Minister for Discipleship/Stated Supply) at dwelch@fpcbristol.org.
Nominating FPC Members to Serve as Elders and Deacons
FPC is looking for persons with the gifs, characteristics, and experiences that make for effective service as church officers. We are beginning the process of nominating church officers for the coming year, and we welcome your suggestions of those members whom you see as particularly gifted for serving as elders or deacons. We ask that you submit names as soon as possible, and no later than Monday, August 22. For the next two weeks, nomination forms will be in late-service bulletins and on seats in the Fellowship Hall. Feel free to consult any member of the 2016 Church Officer Nominating Committee for more information. They are Chuck Thompson (Chair), Scottie Bales, Andrew Beck, Beth Flannagan, and Heidi Harkleroad.
The Duties of Elders
The Book of Order, G-6.0304, states: "It is the duty of elders, individually and jointly, to strengthen and nurture the faith and life of the congregation committed to their charge. Together with the pastor, they should encourage the people in the worship and service of God, equip and renew them for their tasks within the church and for their mission in the world, visit and comfort and care for the people, with special attention to the poor, the sick, the lonely, and those who are oppressed. They should inform the pastor and session of those persons and structures which may need special attention. They should assist in worship. They should cultivate their ability to teach the Bible and may be authorized to supply places which are without the regular ministry of the Word and Sacrament. In specific circumstances and with proper instruction, specific elders may be authorized by the presbytery to administer the Lord's Supper. ... Those duties which all Christians are bound to perform by the law of love are especially incumbent upon elders because of their calling to office and are to be fulfilled by them as official responsibilities."
The Session of First Presbyterian Church is composed of fifteen elders who serve on a three-year rotation. Dottie Havlik is the current Clerk of Session; Dave Welch serves as Moderator. The following are our current elders:

The Duties of Deacons
The Book of Order, G-6.0402, states: "It is the duty of deacons, first of all, to minister to those who are in need, to the sick, to the friendless, and to any who may be in distress both within and beyond the community of faith. They shall assume such other duties as may be delegated to them from time to time by the session, such as leading the people in worship through prayers of intercession, reading the Scriptures, presenting the gifts of the people, and assisting with the Lord's Supper."
The Board of Deacons of First Presbyterian Church is composed of fifteen members who serve on a three-year rotation. The following are our current deacons:

July Session Highlights
PCUSA seal small FPC's Session of Elders met Monday, July 25, and was reminded, through Stuart Parker's devotion, of our primary purpose as followers of Christ and as Elders to worship God, who alone is worthy of our praise. Stuart's devotion served well as the foundation for the evening's work, reflection, and deliberation, which included a conversation with the Reverend Tom Phillips of Colonial Heights Presbyterian Church, who is our Committee on Ministry liaison to the Holston Presbytery.
Rev. Phillips helped the Session to identify the next steps for both the expected calling of the Interim pastor, and the upcoming congregational meeting that will establish the Pastoral Nominating Committee. This committee will be charged with gathering information from the congregation and preparing all the documentation necessary to secure our next fully installed senior pastor.
The Session was pleased to hear of the great ministry this summer that took place with middle school students at the Great Escape and with senior high students at the Journey.
The Session continues to devote significant time and energy responding to concerns of the congregation about leadership and denominational disquiets, while faithfully and prayerfully shaping our community's responses. To that end, the Session continues to invite the members of the church to pray for God's wisdom and for God's Spirit to guide us.
Please note that the agenda of every stated monthly Session meeting includes time for members to engage the Elders of FPC, whether by questions, letters, suggestions, or simply their presence. Elders are always available to members of the congregation. Your current Elders are listed under "Nominating FPC Members to Serve as Elders and Deacons," above.
June Financial Summary
Highlights
  • Pledges/Offerings through June 30 were over budget by $6,016. Comparatively, Pledges/Offerings are up $30,174 over the same period in 2015.
  • Other Income/Reimbursements were $2,377 below year-to-date budget. This was due primarily to Evangelism & Outreach and the change in pay for the Marthina Chapel pastor, as reflected in expenditures.
  • Expenditures through June 30 were below budget by $65,243. This positive variance was driven in large part by the following expense areas:
    • Program Expenditures for Student Ministries was $3,734 under budget. (These funds are expected to be utilized later in the year.)
    • Pastor/Head of Staff was $23,718 under budget. (These funds have accrued during the current vacancy and should accumulate to round $31,600 prior to the interim position being filled effective October 1.)
    • Other Personnel (Support Staff, Facilities, Custodial) were $10,837 under budget.
    • Search Committee was $6,710 under budget. (Any remaining funds from the Interim Pastor Search Committee will be available for the Permanent Pastor Search Committee.)
    • Building Maintenance Services were $8,645 under budget.
    • Utilities were $3,456 under budget.
    • Capital Loan: The balance with Eastman Credit Union at June 30 was $643,414; it was $707,779 at the same time last year.

VBS Shone in the Darkness
We had a wonderful, fun-filled three days exploring CaveQuest in Vacation Bible School! Around 75 children learned that Jesus gives us hope, courage, direction, and love, so we should follow Him! He is the light of the world that shines through the darkness, and we can shine His light too!
I am deeply grateful for the many volunteers that helped make this happen by using their gifts and talents to serve these children.  Lilly Osborne, Director of Children's Ministries

Mowing to Mid-August
August is bringing us some much-needed rain, if not urging the grass on to new heights, at least persuading it to hang in there. David Moore is on tap to mow the church lawn in the second week of August, and Larry Connolly will take over for the third week of the month.
If you would like to help us mow, Randy Cook will be happy to give you a lesson on our Scag mower. We welcome adults and teens, men and women for what we hope will be regular duty. If you can help us for even a single morning or afternoon, please email Randy at npolecook@aol.com or call his cell at 423-956-1541. Thank you!

Music Notes
Sunday's music participants: Sanctuary Choir.
Sunday's music: The text of the Sanctuary Choir anthem, "Help Lord, My Faith," is a translation by Richard Crashaw (1613-1649) of a hymn by St. Thomas Aquinas. It is a call out to God asking for aid and assurance, just as Abram questioned how he could be the ancestor of multitudes, as told in the scripture passage for this week's worship. The musical setting is by Arlen Clarke (b. 1954), an American choral conductor, singer, and composer who lives and works in Greenville, South Carolina.
Arlen Clarke
New service music: We will introduce two new musical pieces for the weekly responses at the 11:00 service. The "Lord, have mercy" that is part of the prayer of confession is a setting by Carl Schalk (b. 1929). Schalk is a Lutheran composer who taught for a number of years at Concordia University in Chicago. Six of his hymn tunes are in Glory to God: the Presbyterian Hymnal. The response to the Assurance of Pardon is an "Alleluia" composed by Sally Ann Morris (b. 1952), who for a number of years has served as Music Director of Parkway Presbyterian Church in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Glory to God includes six of her hymn tunes.
Singing the Psalms: As Don Hudson reminded us in his sermon recently, the Psalms when written were intended to be sung. Central to our reformed heritage has been the effort to recapture this tradition. Calvin encouraged the tradition of singing metrical translations in the vernacular. There have been a number of modern adaptations of this principle, and in our hymnal are a number of fine examples. Another practice, "responsorial psalmody," recognizes that many of the Psalms have natural refrains, and were most likely sung in a "responsive" manner (a leader singing verses and the congregation "responding" with a refrain). We have sung Psalms this way somewhat infrequently; it is our hope to be more intentional in this practice as we hear and rejoice in these songs given to us by God.
Rehearsals resuming: The Sanctuary Choir had its first rehearsal of the new program year Wednesday, August 3. Come join us! The Cherub Choir (ages 4 through grade 1) will begin the program year this Sunday, August 7, at 9:00 a.m. in the children's choir room. A helper is both a necessity and a requirement. Moms, dads, teen siblings, grandparents are welcome to take a turn! The duties are minimal: help keep order, add stars to the attendance chart, escort children to the bathrooms, as needed! Contact the Feys to sign up for a Sunday, or they will be contacting you!
Program of note: James O'Reilly will present an interesting program of music for
James O'Reilly
saxophone and piano in our sanctuary at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, August 5. He will be accompanied by Vicki Fey, and violinist Cameron Lugo will make a guest appearance; King faculty member Gary Robertz will be part of a saxophone quartet. There will be no charge for this program, but a freewill offering will be collected for Bristol Faith in Action. James concludes his year of internship at St. Anne's Catholic Church and will return to seminary this fall for the completion of his degree.
Sunday's Guest Preacher: Brian Alderman
