This Sunday: Stay and Play
Plan now to stay after ONE worship this Sunday, July 10, to enjoy a picnic on the grounds! Bring your lunch or order something from the food trucks in the front parking lot. FPC will provide water, lemonade, and refrigeration. We'll catch up with one another amid (or nigh) games of wiffle ball and kickball. Parents and grandparents can register children for Vacation Bible School, which will begin the next morning. Shake out your picnic blankets, dust off the folding chairs, and prepare to join in the fun! Remember, it all starts with ONE worship at 10:30 in the Fellowship Hall.
Vacation Bible School Begins Monday
Vacation Bible School will meet at the church next week from 9:00 to 12:00 on the mornings of July 11, 12, and 13. This year's theme is "Cave Quest: Following Jesus the Light of the World." Register now! For more information, contact Lilly Osborne, Director of Children's Ministries, at losborne@fpcbristol.org or drop by the sign-up table after ONE worship this Sunday.
Congregational Meeting to Elect PNC July 17
The congregation will meet to elect a Pastor Nominating Committee Sunday, July 17, at 10:20 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall. The Church Officer Nominating Committee (Chuck Thompson, chair; Scottie Bales; Andrew Beck; Beth Flannagan; Heidi Harkleroad) will bring forth a slate of candidates to be approved and elected by the congregation. Please make plans to be there to cast your vote!
Want to Join FPC? Come to the Chapel July 17!
Those wishing to join FPC are encouraged to attend the called Session of Elders in the chapel next Sunday, July 17, at 10:00 a.m. This meeting is earlier than usual, which means that you can become a member of the congregation in time to vote for candidates for the new Pastoral Nominating Committee. If you need more information, please feel free to talk with any Elder or Dave Welch, who can also be reached at dwelch@fpcbristol.org
Girls' Night Out July 19
Heart to Heart Women's Ministry invites FPC women of all ages to a time of relaxed fellowship with their sisters in Christ. Bring a friend and join us for a Girls' Night Out Tuesday, July 19, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., at Machiavelli's. The restaurant is located at 8 Fifth Street in downtown Bristol. Mark your calendar for this evening out and book a sitter, if you'll need one; FPC will not provide child care that evening.
It's Time to Pass the Torch

The survey we took last year made clear that to our congregation a meaningful worship experience is central to everything else at FPC. For many years the same unseen hands (and feet!) have helped to make it possible every time we gather for worship. These rather weary extremities belong to members of the FPC Worship Committee who faithfully see to:
  • Recruiting and coordinating ushers
  • Maintaining sanctuary candles
  • Coordinating flowers, Christmas decorations, Easter palms
  • Preparing the elements for communion
  • Assisting as liaison between church and family for weddings
We now need to find other members of our congregation willing to step forward and relieve these longtime stewards of our worship. We are looking for volunteers to assist in each area listed above. None is a consuming commitment; with thought and prayer about the task, each brings its own blessing.
Each area has a job description and a committee member eager to share years of knowledge with someone who can commit to being part of the team. Please give your prayerful consideration to committing your time to provide the best possible worship experience. For more information or to volunteer, contact Beth Flannagan at 423-764-7875 or bethflannagan74@gmail.com, or simply chat with Scottie Bales, Karen Boone, Emily Hyder, Candy Phelps, Loretta Thomas, or Charles Webb.
FPC Seeks Food Service Coordinator

FPC is looking for a large-group chef to take charge of the fellowship meals we have for 150 people most weeks during the program year and to make sure that plenty of snacks and caffeine are available during the Sunday morning coffee hours. This new part-time Food Service Coordinator will also have opportunities for paid oversight of the use of our facilities by outside groups.
The core of the Food Service Coordinator's work will be the preparation of healthful dinners for folks of all ages and the coordination of all that goes into making those possible, from putting together and overseeing the preparation, serving, and cleanup teams to ordering supplies and cleaning and maintaining kitchen equipment.
In addition to a high school education and the appropriate certifications, this work at the heart of our fellowship gatherings requires two years' experience as a Food Service Coordinator and one year of experience as a chef cooking for large groups. Further details about this position are available here.
To apply, email a cover letter and résumé to dwelch@fpcbristol.org, or mail it to the attention of Dave Welch at First Presbyterian Church, 701 Florida Avenue, Bristol, TN 37620. The application deadline is coming up quickly: Friday, July 15.
FPC Workday for Habitat This Saturday

FPC will take part in a workday for the local Habitat for Humanity this Saturday, July 9. You can help, even if you've never hit the nail on the head. Meet us in the church parking at 8:00 a.m. We should return by 3:00 p.m. Join us!
Meet and Greet Monday at Abuse Alternatives
One of the community services that we at FPC help support is looking for volunteers. Abuse Alternatives Inc. provides domestic violence intervention services in the Bristol twin cities; upper Sullivan County, Tennessee; and Washington County, Virginia. The agency will hold a meet and greet from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., Monday, July 11, for those who want to learn more about the agency and its volunteer opportunities, meet staff, and sign up for future projects, events, and training.
Please RSVP to the agency's volunteer coordinator and community educator, Dan Fehr, at dan@abusealt.org or 423-652-9093. Abuse Alternatives is located at 104 Memorial Drive in Bristol, Tennessee.
Thanks from the Stamp Ministry
The Stamp Ministry we support with the contribution of canceled stamps has written to thank us for our help. In 2014 the Florida-based ministry sent $41,000, collected from many churches, to a Sunday School project that produces curriculum materials in Spanish for use in the US, Latin America, and Spain. Last year this ministry collected $45,639 for this work, and by the end of May 2016, it had raised $13,000. Please continue to place your canceled postage stamps in the plastic bin outside the Fellowship Hall. Thank you!
Fairmount School Thanks You

Our liaison with Fairmount Elementary School, Kay Ward, has sent us a lovely note of thanks for all our help in providing healthful classroom snacks for the children there during the school year. She concludes: "Please be assured that all the congregation's efforts in meeting hunger needs, as well as time spent as Reading Buddies, have made an immediate difference in the lives of Fairmount boys and girls. Your continued support and caring spirit for the Fairmount community is most appreciated."
Mix of Rain and Fun Forecast for FPC

This week Aaron Brooks has had to look hard for a break in the rain. He has been on tap to get the lawns ready for play after church this Sunday. The forecast calls for a hot day but probably not a wet one. If we end up inside, we'll still enjoy ourselves. Next week Dan Gross will keep a weather eye out then hand the Tiger Cat's leash to Jim White.
If you would like to help us mow, Randy Cook will be happy to give you a quick lesson on our Scag mower. We welcome adults and teens, men and women for what we hope will be regular duty. If you can pitch in for even a single morning or afternoon, please email Randy at npolecook@aol.com or call his cell at 423-956-1541. Thank you!
Tuesday Night Middle School FISH

FPC middle school students are gathering here and there this summer. Fellowship in Someone's Home (FISH) meets Tuesdays at 7:00 p.m. Upcoming meetings will be held July 12, 19, and 26. A text with the location will go out each week. If you do not receive FPC Student Ministry texts, please let Katie Arnold know so she can add you to the list. If you would like to host FISH, please let Katie know that, too! Her email address is karnold@fpcbristol.org
Wednesday Night High School Devos

All FPC high school students are invited to Katie and Brad Arnold's home on summer Wednesdays at 7:00 p.m. for devotions and to hang out. The remaining dates are July 13, 20, and 27, and August 3. Bring friends, come hang!
From Steve & Vicki Fey
Music Notes
Music participants: On July 10, Vicki Fey, Mark Mervis, Shannan Miller, Ginny Osborne, Jenn Sproles, and Rett Stocstill will perform during our one service. In the late service on July 17, Samantha Robertson will be our soloist.
Darlene Zschech
Sunday's music: For our ONE Worship this Sunday, July 10, all of the congregational song will be familiar, beloved hymns, perhaps in a slightly different style. Song booklets with music will be available, and the words will also be on the screens. Offertory music will be "The Potter's Hand" by Darlene Zschech.
Program of note: You won't want to miss the July 15 edition of Tunes at Noon at the Paramount Center! Several winners from the 2016 Bristol Music Club scholarship auditions will be performing. Tunes at Noon continues to be partially underwritten and named in memory of the late David and Frances Caldwell, long-time members of First Presbyterian.
Mark your calendars for Friday, August 5. James O'Reilly will present a program of music for saxophone and piano in our sanctuary at 7:00 p.m. He will be accompanied by Vicki Fey, and violinist Cameron Lugo will make a guest appearance. James is completing his year of internship at St. Anne's Catholic Church and will return to seminary this fall for the completion of his degree. There will be no charge for this program.
Guest Preacher for July 10: Chuck Thompson
Chuck and Barb Thompson

Chuck Thompson has been a member of FBC for close to 25 years. He and Barb came to Bristol in 1990, when he was recruited by King College to teach and run the counseling center. Over the years, Chuck has taught several Sunday School classes, filled in between youth directors on three occasions, served on the Session, and been a "greybeard" for VBS. Chuck has written four applied theology books, a fable, an historical novel, six mystery novels, and three Appalachian fantasies, and he just finished a novel that was inspired by a Matt Richardson sermon in the spring. For work Chuck does marriage and family therapy, and for fun he tries to make Barb laugh.
Guest Preacher for July 17: Paul Warhurst

Paul Warhurst

Paul Warhurst is an FPC elder and a Senior Lecturer in New Testament and Theology at King University. He did his PhD work at the University of St. Andrews on Sřren Kierkegaard's writings on the Sermon on the Mount and, impressively, did not neglect his golf game. When he isn't teaching, Paul enjoys being with Amber and their children, hiking on the Appalachian Trail, drinking coffee, and occasionally working on his house.
