Stand Up and Give Them Your Seat

The congregational survey we took last year made clear that a meaningful worship experience is central to all else at FPC/Bristol. In more ways than one, unseen hands (and feet!) help make that experience possible on every occasion for worship. They belong to members of the FPC Worship Committee who commit their time to support our worship experience. For many years these volunteers have faithfully coordinated:
  • Recruiting and coordinating ushers
  • Maintaining sanctuary candles
  • Coordinating flowers, Christmas decorations, Easter palms
  • Preparing the elements for communion
  • Assisting as liaison between church and family for weddings
We now need to find other members of our congregation willing to step forward and relieve these longtime stewards of our worship. We are looking for volunteers to assist in each area listed above. None is a consuming commitment; with thought and prayer about the task, each brings its own blessing.
Each area has a job description and a knowledgeable committee member eager to share years of knowledge with someone who can commit to being part of the team. Please give your prayerful consideration to committing your time to provide the best possible worship experience. For more information or to volunteer, contact Beth Flannagan at 423-764-7875 or bethflannagan74@gmail.com, or simply chat with Emily Hyder, Karen Boone, Scottie Bales, Loretta Thomas, Candy Phelps, or Charles Webb.
See What a Nickel Can Do
It's time again to collect our quarterly offering for the Five-Cents-a-Meal program. We will send the collection taken up this Sunday, June 26, to Holston Presbytery, which also receives the offering from our sister churches. Our combined offerings constitute a fund to which all the churches in the presbytery can apply for grants to disburse to other organizations. FPC has received the presbytery's approval of grants in the amount of $1,107.49 to help the following organizations fight hunger among the poor in 2016:
  • Abuse Alternatives, for food for those in temporary emergency situations
  • Bristol Emergency Food Pantry, to purchase food for distribution
  • Fairmount Elementary School, for food for children when school is not in session
  • Haven of Rest Rescue Mission, for food for homeless residents and the poor
  • Bethel School (Independent Church of Felipe Camarão, Brazil), to provide midday meals to more than 150 children from prekindergarten through second grade
  • Western Wollega Bethel Synod, Ethiopia, to provide hunger relief to retired ministers in the synod
Final Mission Monday Is June 27

Most Monday mornings in June bring an opportunity for families to get together and serve in the community. The final Mission Monday will be June 27. We will meet at the church at 10:30, then go into the community to serve. We may have an opportunity for lunch and playground time afterward. For more information, contact Lilly Osborne at losborne@fpcbristol.org
Fun Family Fellowship at FPC June 29

The Children's Ministries will hold Fun Family Fellowship next Wednesday, June 29, at 5:30 p.m., behind the church. If it rains, we will use a room in the Children's Wing. Please join us for a fun, casual evening!
Stay and Play July 10
Plan now to stay after ONE worship July 10 to enjoy a picnic on the grounds! Pack a lunch, if you like, or order something from one or both of the food trucks you'll find in the front parking lot. The deacons will provide water and lemonade, and refrigeration will be available. We'll play wiffle ball and kickball or just catch up with one another. Parents and grandparents can register children for Vacation Bible School, which will begin the next morning. Shake out your picnic blankets, dust off the folding chairs, and prepare to join in the fun! Remember, it all starts with ONE worship at 10:30 in the Fellowship Hall.
Vacation Bible School Begins July 11
The theme for this summer's Vacation Bible School is "Cave Quest: Following Jesus the Light of the World." VBS will meet at the church from 9:00 to 12:00 on the mornings of July 11, 12, and 13. For more information, contact Lilly Osborne, Director of Children's Ministries.
Tuesday Night Middle School FISH

FPC middle school students are gathering here and there this summer. Fellowship in Someone's Home (FISH) meets Tuesdays at 7:00 p.m. Upcoming meetings will be held June 28 andJuly 5, 12, 19, and 26. A text with the location will go out each week. If you do not receive FPC Student Ministry texts, please let Katie Arnold know so she can add you to the list. If you would like to host FISH, please let Katie know that, too! Her email address is karnold@fpcbristol.org
Wednesday Night High School Devos

All FPC high school students are invited to Katie and Brad Arnold's home on summer Wednesdays at 7:00 p.m. for devotions and to hang out. The remaining dates are July 6, 13, 20, and 27, and August 3. Bring friends, come hang!
Men's Breakfast Takes a Summer Break
The monthly Men's Breakfast and Bible Study is taking the summer off. We will resume in August or September. We will announce the date of the next meeting in plenty of time for you to put it on your calendar!
Volunteer Opportunities at Abuse Alternatives
One of the community services that we at FPC help support is looking for volunteers. Abuse Alternatives Inc. provides domestic violence intervention services in the Bristol twin cities; upper Sullivan County, Tennessee; and Washington County, Virginia. The agency will hold a meet and greet from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., Monday, July 11, for those who want to learn more about the agency and available volunteer opportunities, meet agency staff, and sign up for future projects, events, and training.
Please RSVP to the agency's volunteer coordinator and community educator, Dan Fehr, at dan@abusealt.org or 423-652-9093. Abuse Alternatives is located at 104 Memorial Drive in Bristol, Tennessee.
FPC Mowers Make the Versatility Cut
Before he directs our choir this Sunday,  Pat Flannagan will conduct the Tiger Cat in its tour of the church lawn. As June turns into July, our facilities manager, Larry Connolly, will turn his attention outside to make sure the grounds are in order. When we run outside to play after ONE worship July 10, we will have Aaron Brooks to thank for spiffing conditions for wiffle ball and kickball.
If you would like to help us mow, Randy Cook will be happy to give you a quick lesson on our Scag mower. We welcome adults and teens, men and women for what we hope will be regular duty. If you can pitch in for even a single morning or afternoon, please email Randy at npolecook@aol.com or call his cell at 423-956-1541. Thank you!

Music Notes
Music participants for June 26: Sanctuary Choir; Pat Flannagan, director; Donna Fowlkes, organist. The Feys will attend the Montreat Worship & Music Conference this year as conferees.
Music for June 26: The Sanctuary Choir anthem, "Praise the Name of the Lord" by Russian composer Pavel Ivanoff (1878-1942), was first published in English translation in
Pavel Ivanoff
1915. Although Ivanoff studied with Rimsky-Korsakov, his compositions and this anthem are in the style of older Russian sacred music, with a rich and thick harmonic structure that moves in a very solid manner. The text is in the style of a psalm of praise, punctuated by recurring "alleluias." Choir members offer this joyous work as they complete their program year. They will sing among the congregation during the month of July.
Music participants in July: As the Sanctuary Choir winds down its singing year, we have very talented singers who will offer their gifts in worship during the month of July. July 3: Jordan Pennington; July 10: Worship Team; July 17: Samantha Robertson; July 24: a women's trio with Marjy Larson, Annie Dawson, and Bethany Dawson; July 31: Nancy and Randy Cook.
Guest Preacher for June 26: Dr. Richard A. Ray
Dick Ray

We know and love Dick and Lila Ray from their long relationship with FPC Bristol. We can paint only in the broadest strokes Dick's rich and varied career as a church and community leader, teacher, chaplain, and editor for major theological presses. Of special interest to us, of course, is his service as our senior pastor from 1981 to 1997. From 1997 to 2001, he served as the Robert Meneilly Professor of Leadership and Ministry for Princeton Theological Seminary. He served on the faculty of King College (now University) for 14 years, then as the school's interim president. Dick and Lila look forward to returning to their Montreat home.
Prayers for Our Pastoral Searches
Please join our Session of Elders in prayers for both the continuing search for an interim pastor and the beginning of the process of finding our next full-time, installed pastor. The congregation is invited to join with the elders in these two opportunities. The first is daily at noon, praying wherever you may be. The second is as part of an open gathering every Wednesday evening at 6:00 in the church chapel. Materials, Bibles, and hymnals are available for this prayer time. This gathering is suspended for July 6.
Pray for One Another
An extensive list of prayer concerns, "Pray for One Another," is available for pickup at the church each week.
