Music on Two Keyboards Closes Current Arts Series This Sunday

To close our 2015-16 Arts Series, pianist and organist Carl Angelo will present a program on both instruments this Sunday, May 1, at 3:00 p.m. in our sanctuary. The first half of the program will be on our wonderful Steinway piano at the front of the room. Dr. Angelo will play works of Bach, Mozart, Brahms, and Liszt. After intermission, he will reappear in the choir loft to play works of the same composers on the organ! A screen will be set up in the front of the sanctuary so that the audience can watch him at the organ console. You won't want to miss this fine program! There will be a reception in the chapel after the performance.
Help Us Locate Missing Church Members
As part of our membership ministry, we are correcting and updating our rolls, and we need your help. Specifically, we need up-to-date contact information for fellow members we haven't heard from or seen in several years. Please review the list below and let us know if you have a mailing address, email address, and/or phone number for anyone on it. Please give information directly to Diana Mattison by email (preferred method) at dmattison@fpcbristol.org. If you do not have access to email, you may give her the information by phone at 423-764-7176. Thank you for your help!

April Session Highlights
PCUSA seal small The work of the church continues well, as April's stated Session gave testimony to God's providence. Noteworthy is that the Interim Pastor Search Committee continues their work on the church's behalf with further interviewing of potential candidates along with deepened prayer and discernment for God's leading. To date, several offers have been made to potential interims, but none have been accepted. (For more information about the process, see "Search for Interim Pastor Continues" in the April 14 issue of Windows.)
The Session heard from João Batista (Pastor of Second Presbyterian Church, Natal, Brazil, and Administrator of Bethel School), who shared and highlighted the Bethel School's financial statements. The Session was reminded of the deep connection our congregation has with the school in Felipe Camarão, and God's blessing on both congregations through this ministry!
Finally, the Session received confirmation of the Missionary Emergency Fund allocations expected to be distributed through First Presbyterian Church this year. The Missionary Emergency Fund, an extension of the A.D. Reynolds Foundation, aids in the propagation of the Christian Faith by supporting missions and missionaries, including through scholarships for those preparing for Christian service, and the family education needs of active and retired clergy. The fund directly supports mission endeavors of First Presbyterian Church, including Holston Presbytery, Urban Promise, the Journey youth mission trip, Bethel Preschool in Felipe Camarão, and Berhane Yesus Elementary School in Dembi Dollo, Ethiopia, to name but a few.
Marsh Bloodmobile Here Wednesday Evening
We have completed our Wednesday evening programs for this program year, but we can offer you another reason to come to the church next week. The Marsh Bloodmobile will be in our front parking lot from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 4. Come and donate blood to your community, deprive a few mosquitoes of their evening meal before enjoying your own, and relish the fellowship of other FPC folks who are willing to give blood in a good cause. The T-shirt you'll take home this time is fit for a Southern summer. Sign up at the church, call the church office, or just walk in!
From Frost to Flames
In a couple of weeks, we will reach that magic moment when all threat of frost is past. Getting us there in style, Aaron Brooks and Pat Flannagan will cut and shape the lawn. We'll look neat for Mom on May 8 and be ready for whatever falls our way on Pentecost.
If you would like to help care for the church lawn, Randy Cook will be happy to train you on our Scag Tiger Cat. We welcome adults and teens, men and women for what we hope will be regular duty. If you can help for even a single morning or afternoon, please email Randy at npolecook@aol.com or call his cell at 423-956-1541. Thank you!
Let's Feed Our Hungry Neighbors
A group opportunity to serve the hungry in downtown Bristol is coming up Saturday, May 21. We need FPC folks to cook food ahead of time, pack sack lunches, and serve and clean up. If you can help in any way, please contact Dottie Havlik, our coordinator for this effort, at dhavlik@charter.net.
Our current estimate is that we will need nine chicken casseroles, six large slaws, five large cans of green beans, and a lot of dinner rolls, as well as sandwich bread, fruit, snack cakes, peanut butter and jam for 75 bag lunches. We hope to update these numbers next week. Thank you for your care and service!
Help Inner City Youth through Urban Promise
Dan Kreiss
will lead a team from FPC on a mission to bring light and love to inner city youth in Camden, New Jersey, this summer. This opportunity is open to all. We will serve with Urban Promise from Sunday, June 26, through Saturday, July 2, supporting established educational and social programs there. The total cost to FPC participants is $300. The deadline for registration is Sunday, May 15. Please prayerfully consider this opportunity to join in Christ's ministry of love, peace, and justice. For more information, contact Dan at dskreiss@king.edu.
May 6 Deadline for Letters to Confirmands
In our ONE service on Sunday, May 8, our confirmation students will proclaim their faith before our church family and become members of First Presbyterian Church. As we prepare for this special day, we ask friends and family to send in cards and letters of spiritual encouragement for our confirmands. The kind words you share will not only encourage them as they prepare to be confirmed but also be kept for years as a reminder of the great cloud of witnesses that surrounds them and that will continue to love, guide, and encourage them as they run the race.
The following are the Spring 2016 confirmands: AnnaLee Adams, Alie Bassett, Gracie Brooks, Gracie Buckles, Hope Godsey, Madyson Kent, Riley McCracken, Rose Rosser, and Lance Tudor.
Please deliver all cards and letters to Katie Arnold at the church by Friday, May 6. Katie is your contact for more information, at karnold@fpcbristol.org. Thank you for joining in the celebration of this important and exciting time in the lives of our students!
Calling All Graduates of All Kinds!
We are planning a Sunday of celebrations at both worship services on May 15 to celebrate our graduates of all programs and schools. We will recognize those among us who are completing degrees or certifications or graduating from high school, college, or other programs. We need your help to collect that information. If you or a member of your family will be graduating from high school, college, or any other educational or training program this spring, please let us know by calling the church office at 423-764-7176.
We need the following information by Monday, May 9, for our recognition efforts: graduate's name; current (not future) school or program; degree or certification earned; and field of study. Thank you for your help!
Register Now for High School Summer Trip to PCB
FPC high school students and their friends are encouraged to register now for our summer trip to Journey in Panama City Beach, Florida. We will leave from the church on Sunday, June 26, spend the night in Atlanta, and continue to Panama City Beach the next day. There we will join other church groups from across the southern states for a week of wild games, challenges, fellowship, worship, and fun on the beach, all while on a journey to experience God in a whole new way. We will return home Friday, July 1.
Journey will be held at a retreat center with separate lodges for guys and girls and a dining room where we will take our meals. We suggest that you bring $50 for fast food on the road, and more if you plan to buy souvenirs.
FPC is offsetting the cost of the trip, so your total cost will be $350. Monthly payments are possible, but the full amount must be paid by June 15. Scholarships are available, first-come-first-serve, for FPC members. A nonrefundable $100 deposit is required at registration. Once you pay your deposit, you are fully responsible for the total cost of the trip. If something comes up and you can no longer go, you may find someone to take your spot and have your deposit transferred to them. This is Journey's payment policy, and we cannot deviate from it.
This is an event you won't want to miss! Check out the Journey promo video on Vimeo at www.vimeo.com/144032784. For more information, email Katie Arnold at karnold@fpcbristol.org or call her at 423-764-7176 (office) or 770-296-1671 (cell).
Middle School Students, Register Now for Great Escape
Join FPC's Middle School Ministry on a summer adventure to the Great Escape! We will leave from the church on Sunday, June 12, and head to Lee University in Cleveland, Tennessee. There we will join middle school students from all over the US for a wild 'n' crazy week of incredible music, captivating speakers, engaging entertainment, and the messiest games you can imagine. And we'll spend a day whitewater rafting on the Ocoee River! We will return around noon on Friday, June 17.
A nonrefundable deposit of $100 is required to secure a spot on the trip. The total cost of $435 includes an FPC T-shirt, the camp, travel, and the whitewater rafting. This is an event you won't want to miss! Contact Katie Arnold at karnold@fpcbristol.org to register.

Music Notes
Sunday's music participants: Sanctuary Choir, Sanctuary Bells.
Larry Visser
Sunday's music: The Sanctuary Choir anthem, "Peace I Give to You," is a setting of John 14:27 by Larry Visser (b. 1962). A noted composer and organ recitalist, Visser received his education at various Michigan schools, and currently serves as minister of music at LaGrave Avenue Christian Reformed Church in Grand Rapids. His three-fold setting of the text builds in intensity through each statement, ending in quiet confidence, just as the text sings "my peace I leave with you."
The Sanctuary Bells will offer as a prelude "Triumphal Entry" by Michael Bedford (b. 1949). Bedford has degrees from Texas schools, is the organist and choirmaster of St. John's Episcopal Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and has published numerous compositions. As its title implies, "Triumphal Entry" is a joyous and vigorous composition for handbells with a driving rhythmic quality, inviting us into exuberant worship.
Michael Bedford
Reformation anniversary trip: The Presbyterian Association of Musicians is providing an opportunity in 2017 to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation by touring Glasgow and Edinburgh, Scotland. We are gathering names of choir members, King students, and Voices of the Mountains folks to travel with us, and we're inviting church members and other interested parties to join us. You don't have to be a singer! Dates are July 29-August 6, 2017, and include a workshop and song service with John Bell of the Iona Community and a festival choir of Americans (mostly Presbyterian!) and Scots under the direction of Simon Carrington, founding member of the King's Singers, a six-voice male a cappella group. There will be other opportunities to sing as groups are interested in doing so. We may add a side trip to Ireland for a couple of days prior to July 29. Interested parties may contact us, and we will email the current itinerary.
Toward a Timely Prayer List
To facilitate and more closely coordinate our congregation's prayer energies, we are making slight changes to the way we compile and maintain "In Our Prayers," the list of prayer concerns that appears in each issue of this newsletter. You will still make prayer requests by calling the church office at 423-764-7176 or emailing Diana Mattison at dmattison@fpcbristol.org. We will publish each name for three weeks from the initial request, then remove it. Requests to continue prayers can be made in the same way as the initial request. In this way, Windows will carry the most recent and timely prayer needs of the congregation. If you have any questions, please contact Dave Welch at dwelch@fpcbristol.org.
Recognizing that prayer has both individual and communal aspects and that it is a high calling to bring to God the needs of brothers and sisters in the faith, we invite the members of First Presbyterian to share together in this rich ministry.
Pray for One Another
An extensive list of prayer concerns, "Pray for One Another," is available for pickup at the church each week.
