They're Here!
Friends from Brazil
We welcomed Pastor Joćo Batista Amaral de Oliveira and his wife, Rosangela Silva de Oliveira, to Bristol last Friday, heard Joćo Batista preach on Sunday, and are becoming better acquainted with these wonderful servants and partners in mission. We hope you, too, have been able to be a part of this. Below is the schedule of the remaining events that will give FPC folks time for fellowship and study with our Brazilian friends.

Remaining Activities for Joćo Batista and Rosangela's Visit
Thursday, April 21
Joćo Batista will attend the Men's Bible Study.
Sunday, April 24
  • During the Sunday School hour, Joćo Batista and Rosangela will update us on our partners in Brazil: the church, school, and their life in Felipe Camarćo.
  • Joćo Batista will preach at Marthina Chapel.
  • Participate in Youth Group Sunday night
Monday, April 25
Joćo Batista will attend the Session.
Tuesday, April 26
  • Joćo Batista and Rosangela will visit and pray with the Tuesday Morning Prayer Group.
  • Rosangela will provide the program at the Heart to Heart gathering.
Wednesday, April 27
On their final night in Bristol, Joćo Batista and Rosangela will be treated to the music of Slim Pickins during our Wednesday Night Fellowship.

Another Way to Get to Know Our Guests
If you enjoy retail therapy, our remaining hosting opportunity is for you! We are looking for someone (or two or three ...) to take them shopping at the Pinnacle, Walmart, or other stores, on the afternoon of Wednesday, April 27. This is a chance to interact with Joćo Batista and Rosangela in an informal and fun way. We doubt a translator will be available, but we also doubt a translator will be necessary! Please contact John or Karen Vann at 423-968-7802, if you are interested in this opportunity. Thank you!
Welcome Rosangela with Heart to Heart
Heart to Heart Women's Ministry invites all women of FPC to visit with Rosangela Silva de Oliveira on Tuesday, April 26, at 7:00 p.m. Rosangela is the director of Bethel School, our longtime mission partner in the Felipe Camarćo neighborhood of Natal, Brazil. Please join us to welcome our sister in Christ and learn more about the precious children of Bethel. Your presence will be most appreciated! We will meet in the chapel and gather in the parlor for dessert afterwards. A nursery will be provided. Please let the church office (423-764-7176) know the ages and number of children who will need child care.

Visitors from Brazil + Bluegrass from Home: Mix and Enjoy
Come help us introduce our friends from Brazil to homegrown bluegrass during our final Wednesday evening program, next week. Joćo Batista and Rosangela will join us for dinner and fellowship on April 27, and Slim Pickens, the well-known bluegrass band from Tennessee High School, will entertain us. Dinner will be served at 5:30, and the music will fill our ears and tap our feet at 6:20. Student Small Groups and Wednesday Night Kids will meet at 6:00, but all are welcome to enjoy the music and visit with our guests. We look forward to seeing everyone!
Keep Calm and Starve Skeeters
The Marsh Bloodmobile will be in our front parking lot from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 4. Come out and donate blood to your community, deprive a few mosquitoes of their evening meal, and enjoy the fellowship of other folks who are willing to give blood in a good cause. The T-shirt you'll take home this time is perfect for a Southern summer. Sign up at the church, call the church office, or just walk in!
May 6 Deadline for Letters to Confirmands
In our ONE service on Sunday, May 8, our confirmation students will proclaim their faith before our church family and become members of First Presbyterian Church. As we prepare for this special day, we ask friends and family to send in cards and letters of spiritual encouragement for our confirmands. The kind words you share will not only encourage them as they prepare to be confirmed but also be kept for years as a reminder of the great cloud of witnesses that surrounds them and that will continue to love, guide, and encourage them as they run the race.
The following are the Spring 2016 confirmands: AnnaLee Adams, Alie Bassett, Gracie Brooks, Gracie Buckles, Hope Godsey, Madyson Kent, Riley McCracken, Rose Rosser, and Lance Tudor.
Please deliver all cards and letters to Katie Arnold at the church by Friday, May 6. Katie is your contact for more information, at karnold@fpcbristol.org. Thank you for joining in the celebration of this important and exciting time in the lives of our students!
Calling All Graduates of All Kinds!
We are planning a Sunday of celebrations at both worship services on May 15 to celebrate our graduates of all programs and schools. We will recognize those among us who are completing degrees or certifications or graduating from high school, college, or other programs. We need your help to collect that information. If you or a member of your family will be graduating from high school, college, or any other educational or training program this spring, please let us know by calling the church office at 423-764-7176.
We need the following information by Monday, May 9, for our recognition efforts: graduate's name; current (not future) school or program; degree or certification earned; and field of study. Thank you for your help!
Register Now for High School Summer Trip to PCB
FPC high school students and their friends are encouraged to register now for our summer trip to Journey in Panama City Beach, Florida. We will leave from the church on Sunday, June 26, spend the night in Atlanta, and continue to Panama City Beach the next day. There we will join other church groups from across the southern states for a week of wild games, challenges, fellowship, worship, and fun on the beach, all while on a journey to experience God in a whole new way. We will return home Friday, July 1.
Journey will be held at a retreat center with separate lodges for guys and girls and a dining room where we will take our meals. We suggest that you bring $50 for fast food on the road, and more if you plan to buy souvenirs.
FPC is offsetting the cost of the trip, so your total cost will be $350. Monthly payments are possible, but the full amount must be paid by June 15. Scholarships are available, first-come-first-serve, for FPC members. A nonrefundable $100 deposit is required at registration. Once you pay your deposit, you are fully responsible for the total cost of the trip. If something comes up and you can no longer go, you may find someone to take your spot and have your deposit transferred to them. This is Journey's payment policy, and we cannot deviate from it.
This is an event you won't want to miss! Check out the Journey promo video on Vimeo at www.vimeo.com/144032784. For more information, email Katie Arnold at karnold@fpcbristol.org or call her at 423-764-7176 (office) or 770-296-1671 (cell).
Summer Adventure for Middle School Students at Great Escape
Join FPC's Middle School Ministry on a summer adventure to the Great Escape! We will leave from the church on Sunday, June 12, and head to Lee University in Cleveland, Tennessee. There we will join middle school students from all over the US for a wild 'n' crazy week of incredible music, captivating speakers, engaging entertainment, and the messiest games you can imagine. And we'll spend a day whitewater rafting on the Ocoee River! We will return around noon on Friday, June 17.
A nonrefundable deposit of $100 is required to secure a spot on the trip. The total cost of $435 includes an FPC T-shirt, the camp, travel, and the whitewater rafting. Register now! This is an event you won't want to miss!
Save the Date for VBS
It's time to mark your calendar for Vacation Bible School! First Presbyterian will hold VBS for ages 4 years through sixth grade on the mornings of July 11-13 (Monday through Wednesday) from 9:00 to 11:30. Children, volunteers, and staff always have such a wonderful and illuminating time that we urge you to plan now to register your young friends when the time comes!
Last Call for Vanilla Wafers for Fairmount
We are winding down our collection of vanilla wafers for the Fairmount Elementary School snack program for this school year. If you wish to donate any brand of these little cookies now, please bring them to the Little Red House in the Fellowship Hallway. The Neighborhood Initiatives Steering Committee will take them to Fairmount, where teachers will divide them into portions for students whose parents cannot afford to send snacks to school with them. We'll collect snacks again when the school year begins anew.
Mowers of the World, Unite!
David Moore will mow the church lawn during the final week of the cruelest month, and Aaron Brooks will take over for the first week of the merriest. How strange the times, how oddly juxtaposed the seasons. Shouldn't you do something about it?
It is never too late to join the folks fighting the good fight in the tall grass. If you would like to pitch in, Randy Cook will be happy to train you on our Scag Tiger Cat. We welcome adults and teens, men and women for what we hope will be regular duty. If you can help for even a single morning or afternoon, please email Randy at npolecook@aol.com or call his cell at 423-956-1541. Thank you!

Music Notes

Sunday's music participants: King University Symphonic Choir; Pat Flannagan, conductor; Rebekah Triska, student conductor; Lauren Castor, flute.
Sunday's music: We have a long tradition of hosting the King University Symphonic Choir in worship in late spring, prior to graduation. They will offer three anthems as part of our 11:00 worship. They will open with a portion of "Yonder Come Day," a setting of a traditional Georgia Sea Island song, arranged by Craig Carnahan. Carnahan was educated and is based in Minnesota, although his compositions, particularly choral, are widely sung. This vigorous song rejoices in the new day.
Next they will sing "Promised Land," a new setting of familiar words by Samuel Stennett (1727-1795), an English Baptist minister best remembered for this text. It gained wide popularity in 19th century revivals, as it speaks clearly of a hope for eternal life. The musical setting by Sheldon Curry, a Texas native now living and working in Arizona, builds from a quiet beginning to reflect the hope and joy in the text.
The choir's final anthem will be "Christ in the Stranger's Guise," a Gaelic text recovered by Kenneth MacLeod (1871-1955). The words are an echo of Matthew 25:35-40 ("For I was hungry ..."). The musical setting is by David Ashley White (b. 1944), a seventh-generation Texan whose career has been spent at the University of Houston, where he was educated.
Programs of Note: The Symphony of the Mountains will close its 2015-2016 season Saturday, April 23, at 7:30 p.m., with Stories of Freedom, a concert commemorating the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II. Included on the program at the Eastman Employee Center's Toy F. Reid Auditorium will be Randall Thompson's Testament of Freedom, set to words by Thomas Jefferson and written for chorus and orchestra. The chorus will include Voices of the Mountains and the King University Choirs, directed by Pat Flannagan, and the Civic Chorale. Veterans will be honored, and all students will be admitted at no charge.
Also this weekend is the spring concert by the Highlands Youth Ensemble, which includes our own Bella Bane, Annie Osborne, Daniel Osborne, and Madison Ratliff. Concert time is 7:00 p.m. Sunday, April 24, at Christ the King Catholic Church in Abingdon.
Arts Series: To close our 2015-16 Arts Series, pianist and organist Carl Angelo will present a program on both instruments Sunday, May 1, at 3:00 p.m., in our sanctuary. The first half of the program will be downstairs on our wonderful Steinway piano. He will play works of Bach, Mozart, Brahms, and Liszt. For the second half of the program, he will play works of the same composers on the organ! A screen will be set up in the front so that the audience can watch him at the organ console.
Thank you to our donors for your support this year! When we reschedule the recital by Cheryl Parrish, you will receive tickets for that program.
Molding the Prayer List Closer to Our Hearts' Desire
To facilitate and more closely coordinate our congregation's prayer energies, we are making slight changes to the way we compile and maintain "In Our Prayers," the list of prayer concerns that appears in each issue of this newsletter. You will still make prayer requests by calling the church office at 423-764-7176 or emailing Diana Mattison at dmattison@fpcbristol.org. We will publish each name for three weeks from the initial request, then remove it. Requests to continue prayers can be made in the same way as the initial request. In this way, Windows will carry the most recent and timely prayer needs of the congregation. If you have any questions, please contact Dave Welch at dwelch@fpcbristol.org.
Recognizing that prayer has both individual and communal aspects and that it is a high calling to bring to God the needs of brothers and sisters in the faith, we invite the members of First Presbyterian to share together in this rich ministry.
Pray for One Another
An extensive list of prayer concerns, "Pray for One Another," is available for pickup at the church each week.
