Beloved Old Songs Fill ONE Worship

Led by musicians from both regular morning services, the music in ONE worship this Sunday is built around a theme of old hymns and songs. The service will open with "What a Fellowship, What a Joy Divine" and "How Great Thou Art." Our time of confession will include "Softly and Tenderly Jesus Is Calling"; we will respond to the sermon with "O Love That Wilt Not Let Me Go." We will conclude worship with "Standing on the Promises," and as we leave worship, we will sing the refrain from "I Love to Tell the Story." These beloved songs have spoken to and for the saints for generations, and it is hoped that they continue to have a place in the hearts of our worshiping community.
Please join us this Sunday, March 13, for ONE worship, to be held at 10:30 a.m. in the sanctuary. The Cherub Choir will not rehearse, and all Sunday School classes will begin at 9:30.
Daylight Saving Time Returns

Daylight Saving Time will alight without so much as rustling a leaf before first birdsong this Sunday, March 13. Remember to set your clocks ahead one hour before you doze off Saturday night. You'll want to be on time for the early start of Sunday School at 9:30. We'll see you in ONE worship at 10:30!
Let Us Entertain You!

It's showtime! Come to the Fellowship Hall this Sunday, March 13, at 5:00 p.m. for a rare display of talent and taste! Our Talent Show and Chili Cook-Off are guaranteed to have something for everyone. We have around 12 acts, including a rope jumper, a fiddler, a gymnast, a storyteller, a stand-up comedian, and many singers, including solos and groups. We might even have a juggler. It's an otherwise free evening on the church calendar; Jubilate Youth Choir and Student Fellowship will not meet. Be there!
Monday Is Deadline for Easter Lily Orders

We are winding down the ordering of Easter lilies for our worship spaces. The deadline for placing orders is Monday, March 14. To order lilies in honor or memory of someone, simply fill out a form and return it to the church office with your payment.Lilies are $15 per plant, and order forms are available throughout the church. To aid correct acknowledgment, please print all names exactly as you wish to see them in the Easter bulletin. Lilies will be placed in the sanctuary and Fellowship Hall after the Good Friday worship service.
Timely Talk: Empathy and Faith
Please join us Wednesday, March 16, for an evening of fellowship and learning. Dr. Shannon Harris, Associate Professor of History at King University and Interim Director of the King Institute for Faith and Culture, will lead our Adult Learning segment. Her talk, "Teaching and Practice: The Virtue of Empathy," will ask how the practice of empathy can change the way we see history, and through this, other people and our role in this world. We will consider whether empathy is always a good thing, and what our faith has to do with it.
Dr. Harris's presentation will begin at 6:20 p.m., following the 5:30 fellowship dinner. Student Small Groups and Wednesday Night Kids will meet at 6:00. We look forward to seeing you!
Girls' Night Out Next Tuesday

Heart to Heart Women's Ministry invites FPC women of all ages to a time of relaxed fellowship with their sisters in Christ. Bring a friend and join us for a Girls' Night Out next Tuesday, March 15, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., at Casa Mexicana, 1020 Volunteer Parkway.
A nursery will be available at the church. Please call the church office by noon on Monday, March 14, to let us know the number and ages of the children you will need care for. We will not provide dinner, so be sure to feed your children before you bring them to the church or pack a supper for them. You will need to pick up your children by 8:00 p.m. For more information, visit our Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/hearttoheartfpcbristol.

Fusion Prepares Seder Meal
The fifth and sixth grade students in FPC's Fusion group will prepare a Seder meal for themselves and their parents on Maundy Thursday, March 24. The students should come to the church kitchen at 4:00 p.m. to prepare the traditional foods for this meal of remembrance and anticipation. Ruthie Blair and Barb Thompson will lead their work.
At the Seder, each child must be accompanied by an adult, so one or both parents should arrive at 5:30 p.m. Please bring cushions for you and your child to sit on. We regret that we cannot include siblings in this event. Please RSVP to Lilly Osborne (losborne@fpcbristol.org) so that we can make our plans for the meal, and do let her know if you will need child care.
The churchwide Maundy Thursday worship service will be held in the sanctuary at 7:00 p.m. Participating in it together would be a wonderful way to cap off the evening. For more information, contact your Fusion teacher, Lilly, or Ruthie, or visit our event page on Facebook.
Fusion Glows in the Dark!

On Saturday, March 19, our fifth and sixth grade Fusion group will enjoy a Glow-in-the-Dark Egg Hunt at the home of Lilly and Ray Osborne. Last year's was so much fun that we're sure you won't want to miss this year's! For more information, contact Lillyat losborne@fpcbristol.org
Children's Easter Egg Hunt March 19

We will hold an Easter Egg hunt at the church Saturday, March 19, beginning at 12:30. This event is always fun for everyone, so plan now to bring your children.
Vanilla Wafers for March Scholars
We are now collecting vanilla wafers to share with our young friends at Fairmount Elementary School. Please bring your donations of any brand of these little cookies to the Little Red House in the Fellowship Hallway. The Neighborhood Initiatives Steering Committee will take them to Fairmount, where teachers will divide them into portions for students whose parents cannot afford to send snacks to school with them. Thank you for giving these children a boost!
If You Care, and You Can, Volunteer!

If you can take a meal to someone just home from the hospital, send a card or make a phone call to someone in a special care facility, or comfort someone in distress, FPC wants you for Care Shepherds, our congregational care ministry. The goal of this ministry is to show Christian love to members of our church family who are in need.
We begin a new Care Shepherds schedule in April and will hold a training event sometime that month. Come with your talents and build confidence as you serve! There are as many ways to do so as there are opportunities. Volunteers serve one month at a time on a team that coordinates the needs of the congregation for that month.
For more information or to volunteer, please contact Robin North at robinnorth3@gmail.com, Dave Welch at dwelch@fpcbristol.org, or the church office at 423-764-7176. Sign-up forms will also be available at the church.
Please Help Us with Family Promise
We are urgently seeking volunteers to help host a homeless family in the Family Promise of Bristol program in a couple of weeks. We are asking for your help in caring for our guests in the church at some point during their stay, from late afternoon on Sunday, March 20, through early morning on Sunday, March 27. Here is a reminder of our volunteering needs.
Food
We need volunteers to bring in breakfast items or prepared dinners. Breakfast items and supplies should be brought to the church and left in the little kitchen by Sunday, March 20. Dinner should be brought in ready to serve at 5:30 each evening from Sunday through Saturday. This is most easily done by a family or a team, and you may volunteer for any number of meals, from one to all!
Dinner Hosts
Dinner hosts come to the church by 5:30 to welcome our guests, eat with them, and stay until the overnight hosts arrive at 8:30. Some people find it easy to bring dinner and stay to host. You may volunteer for a single evening or more, as you wish.
Overnight Hosts
Overnight hosts arrive at the church by 8:30 p.m., spend the night, and help with continental breakfast the next morning. Guests leave the church around 7:00 a.m., except on Saturday, when they leave a little later. Again, you may volunteer for a single evening or more, as you wish.
Laundry
On the morning of Sunday, March 27, we will have piles of sheets, towels, and comforters to wash with bleach and return to the Family Promise Closet at the church. This is a task that can be done at your convenience.
Contact Information
To volunteer for any or all of these tasks, or to ask a question or make a suggestion, please email Scottie Bales at scottie@rtherapeutics.com, or text or call her at 423-360-5357. If you know of folks who may want to help in any way, please encourage them to step forward, or ask Scottie to contact them. Thank you so much for your love and hospitality to our guests!
Two Sundays Remain before Ethiopia Mission
Only two Sundays remain to donate school supplies for our Ethiopia mission! Our team can accept donations up through March 20. Then it will be time to pack them all for Dembi Dollo.
Nancy Allerton, Peggy Hill, Jon McClain, and Stuart Parker will be there from March 23 through April 2 to meet with the teachers and students of Berhane Yesus Elementary School, our partners in eleven years of ministry and education. Team members continue to ask for your prayers as well as for donations of school supplies and soccer balls. Please help fill the bins in the Fellowship Hallway and the narthex with:
  • Packs of ballpoint or gel pens (blue or black ink only)
  • Packs of no. 2 pencils
  • Small bookbags:
  • Laptop computers (new or gently used; the team will be able to hand-carry up to four laptops; please deliver directly to one of the team members)
  • Soccer balls
The team will pack the donations on the afternoon of Palm Sunday, all the while thanking you in their hearts for your compassionate generosity.
Help Youth with Urban Promise
If you care about the plight of urban youth, you'll want to talk to Dan Kreiss about an opportunity to do something about it this summer. Dan will lead a team from FPC that will serve with Urban Promise in Camden, New Jersey, from Sunday, June 26, through Saturday, July 2. The work will support established educational and social programs there.
This mission opportunity is open to anyone. Please prayerfully consider this opportunity to join in Christ's ministry of love, peace, and justice. For more information, contact Dan at dskreiss@king.edu
Slicing into the Tall Grass

Crocuses are blooming, daffodils are unfurling; can dandelions be far behind? Here and there about town, mowers have sprung forth to discourage the still-cold grass, and we will soon follow suit, if we can find people to guide the church Tiger Cat around the lawn.
Don't lose us in the tall grass! We have lost some volunteers since last mowing season, so please volunteer, even if you can help only once. Our team celebrates the ability of men and women, adults and teens, to mow the blessed lawn.
The captain of our mowing team, Randy Cook, will be happy to train you, if needed, on our Scag mower. We hope you will sign up for regular duty, but if you can help for even a single morning or afternoon, please email Randy at npolecook@aol.com or call his cell at 423-956-1541.

Music Notes
Sunday's music participants: Sanctuary Choir; Abbey Kitts, percussion; Mark Mervis, bass; Shannan Miller, piano and vocals; Rett Stocstill, guitar; Sara Stocstill, vocals.
Aaron Copland
Sunday's music: The Sanctuary Choir will sing Aaron Copland's arrangement of the beloved hymn "Shall We Gather at the River." Copland (1900-1990), known as a classical composer, made considerable use of American folk songs and styles in much of his music. In the early 1950s, he composed arrangements for soloist and piano of ten American songs, several of which, including this one, were sacred works. Most of these, with the composer's approval, were adapted for choirs. Our anthem, "At the River," uses two stanzas of Robert Lowry's beloved hymn. Lowry (1826-1899) wrote it in 1864, when he was a Baptist pastor in Brooklyn, New York. In the midst of an epidemic in the city, he was reflecting on death and life eternal. Copland's setting seems to be influenced by the image of the "shining river."
Upcoming for Holy Week: Music for Holy Week includes both children's choirs singing with the Sanctuary Choir at the 11:00 service on Palm Sunday, March 20; the Sanctuary Choir and Sanctuary Bells for the Maundy Thursday service at 7:00 p.m.; the Jubilate Youth Choir for Good Friday at 7:00 p.m.; and our usual array of musicians for Easter sunrise (7:00 a.m.), 8:30 worship, and 11:00 worship, which will also include the ETSU Faculty Brass Ensemble.
Arts Series: Our next Arts Series program is just a few weeks away! On Sunday, April 3, soprano Cheryl Parrish, accompanied by Vicki Fey, will sing a varied program of familiar works by Mozart and Schubert, and perhaps less familiar songs by Italian composer Stefano Donaudy, Canadian composer William Jordan, and American composer Richard Pearson Thomas. Suggested ticket donations are $10 for adults and $5 for students from age 6 through college.
Pray for One Another
An extensive list of prayer concerns, "Pray for One Another," is available for pickup at the church each week.
