Tonight! Heart to Heart Fall Gathering
Cary Umhau
Tonight's the night of our annual Heart to Heart Fall Gathering! We will gather in the Fellowship Hall for a buffet supper at 5:30, then hear Cary Campbell Umhau on the "spacious" life: how we can restore friendship to our lives and neighborliness to our communities. The author of Burning Down the Fireproof Hotel: An Invitation to the Beautiful Life, Cary has been interviewed by BBC World Service Radio and written about in glowing terms in The Washington Post, The Huffington Post, and Gawker.  More to the point, she was a big hit at our Women's Retreat a few years ago! You can find her website here: http://spacious.org.
All FPC women are warmly encouraged to come and bring a friend. We will provide child care and a children's dinner of pizza and fruit. If you plan to attend, please let us know by calling the church office at 423-764-7176, emailing Jane Prater at jprater@fpcbristol.org, or responding on Facebook. And please let us know how many children you will bring, and their ages. We anticipate a wonderful evening together!
Servers, Food Needed for Sharing Christ Mission

We are planning to feed at least 100 people October 10 at the Sharing Christ Downtown Mission on the corner of State and Sixth streets. We need volunteers to serve dinner, and we also need three more chicken casseroles, seven large slaws, 75 pieces of fruit, 75 snack cakes, and 75 paper bags. The recipes for the casseroles and slaw are available from our coordinator for this effort, Tammy Connolly. You can contact her at 423-968-3831 or lconn4691@btes.tv.
If you can help in any way, please fill out and return the bulletin insert you will find Sunday morning, or get in touch with Tammy. Our final opportunity to serve with Sharing Christ in 2015 will be Thanksgiving weekend. Thank you for your care and service!
Celebrate the Turnbulls!

As most of you have heard by now, Gordon and Betsy Turnbull will soon leave FPC for John Knox Presbyterian Church in Greenville, South Carolina. You are warmly invited to a churchwide celebration of Gordon and Betsy next Sunday, October 11, at 4:00 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. Dinner will be served at 4:30.
Those who wish to participate in tangible remembrances for the Turnbulls have several opportunities:
  • A joint gift from the congregation. Donations should be given by Wednesday, October 7, to Charles Webb. Donations should not be given to the church, because this is a gift directly from us to Gordon and Betsy. You may give Charles your gift when you see him at church or call him at 423-247-7557 to make other arrangements.
  • An audio quilt. You record your spoken wishes, stories, or memories, and we put them together to warm Gordon and Betsy in their new home. To record your message, simply follow the three steps below:

1.       Call LifeOnRecord at 1-800-606-0697 by Wednesday, October 7.

2.       When prompted, enter FPC's invitation number: 15587

3.       Record your message after the tone, then either hang up or press the # key. Pressing the # key gives you options to listen to your recording, accept it, or re-record it.

  • A scrapbook. Karen Boone is collecting pictures and letters to present to Gordon and Betsy as a remembrance of our lives in faith together. If you would like to keep your letter confidential, please seal it in an envelope. The pictures will also be incorporated into a video that will be shown at the celebration. Pictures should be given to Karen no later than Monday, October 5, and letters by Wednesday, October 7.If you miss seeing Karen at church, you may call her at 423-538-8423 to make other arrangements.
It would be hard to find anything more tangible than your presence at the party! Please mark the date and time on your calendar and plan to be there with bells on! You will not only add to the evening's music but also leaven our loss.
Stewardship Series Concludes
In our adult learning segment next Wednesday evening, October 7, Gordon Turnbull will present the final program in a three-part series on stewardship. We will gather in the Fellowship Hall at 5:30 for dinner, and the adult program will follow at 6:20. Wednesday Night Kids and Student Ministries small groups will meet at 6:00. Please join us!
Snacks for Fairmount Children
We are collecting boxes of original and multigrain Cheerios for neighborhood schoolchildren who cannot afford to bring snacks from home. We want all the young students at Fairmount Elementary School to get the energy boost they need to stay focused in the afternoon. You can help by bringing in one or more boxes of Cheerios and placing them in the little red house in the Fellowship Hallway. We appreciate it, and so will our hungry young friends!
Water of Life, with a Little Umbrella

The skies are pouring the good stuff this week, and the grass is drinking it up. JB Madison isn't waiting for World Communion Sunday to deal with this mixed blessing. We'll find a smooth lawn all the greener for the clouds above when we come to worship October 4. What's in the stars for David Moore next week promises to be much the same, although it is possible that the mortal waterworks indoors on October 11 will outperform the celestial works outside.
We usually mow through the month of October and sometimes into November. It's never too late to join the team. Just call Randy Cook at 423-956-1541 or email him at npolecook@aol.com. If you've never used a Scag mower before, he will be delighted to show you how.

Music Notes

Sunday's music participants: Jubilate Youth Choir (8:30 only), Savior's Singers Children's Choir (11:00 only), Brandon Story, bass, and Mariel Story, guitar; Sanctuary Choir.
Sunday's music: In honor of World Communion Sunday, music at both services will share expressions of Christianity from around the world. Congregational hymns will come from England ("In Christ There Is No East or West"), Korea ("Come to the Table"), and Jamaica ("Let Us Talents and Tongues Employ"). Responses come from Palestine, Peru, Argentina, and an American folk hymn.
At the 8:30 service, the Jubilate Youth Choir will sing "Jesu, Jesu," a song from Ghana that echoes the story of the foot washing of the disciples, and how Jesus' example shows us how we are to care for one another. At the 11:00 service, the Savior's Singers Children's Choir will open the worship with "Mae O, Basudarae" ("Come, O Come, Sisters, Brothers, Come"), a song from the Ambonese, an ethnic group of southern Indonesian.
The Sanctuary Choir anthem is a setting of the Latin text "Ubi Caritas," which is often associated with the story of the foot washing. The music makes use of elements of an ancient chant melody in a setting by Norwegian-American composer Ola Gjeilo.
EPIC: The Servant King

This week's EPIC tale from The Jesus Storybook Bible is "The Servant King," inspired by Mark 14 and John 13-14. Please join us on World Communion Sunday, October 4, as we hear the story of the Last Supper and remember Jesus in the breaking of the bread.
