Congregational Meeting Sunday Morning
PCUSA seal small During our ONE Worship service this Sunday, September 27, the congregation of First Presbyterian Church will convene a called meeting related to our impending pastoral transition. The one item of business will be to act on a request from Gordon Turnbull that Holston Presbytery dissolve the pastoral relationship with First Presbyterian Church of Bristol, effective October 15, 2015. All worshipers, including visitors, are welcome to attend this meeting, but only those on the Roll of Active Members are authorized to participate with voice and vote.
Take Heart! Women Gather Next Week
Cary Umhau
We are looking forward to our annual Heart to Heart Fall Gathering, coming up next Thursday, October 1. Cary Campbell Umhau will speak to us, and many of us are preparing by reading her book, Burning Down the Fireproof Hotel: An Invitation to the Beautiful Life. It's a quick read that you can order from Amazon in print or on Kindle. Of course, we'd love to see you there whether you've read the book or not! Cary will enjoy signing your books and will have copies for sale.
We will gather at 5:30 in the Fellowship Hall for a supper buffet, and the program will begin at 6:15. We are looking forward to an amazing program from Cary, who is also the founder and director of SPACIOUS, which she describes as "a movement of folks who want to create ways to bring people together to banish loneliness and foster deeper connections and community."
All FPC women are warmly encouraged to come and bring a friend to hear the speaker who touched many of us with her warmth, humor, and winsome faith several years ago at our Women's Retreat in Blowing Rock.
We will provide child care and a children's dinner of pizza and fruit. If you plan to attend, please let us know by calling the church office at 423-764-7176, emailing Jane Prater at jprater@fpcbristol.org, or responding on Facebook. And please let us know how many children you will bring, and their ages. We anticipate a wonderful evening together!
Celebrating the Turnbulls
After sixteen years of service to our congregation, Gordon and Betsy Turnbull will soon follow God's call to John Knox Presbyterian Church in Greenville, South Carolina. October 11 will be Gordon's last morning in the pulpit of First Presbyterian Church, and we have chosen that evening as the time for a celebration of our time together. We will gather at 4:00 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall to share dinner and memories and to say farewell. Dinner will be served at 4:30.
Meanwhile, those who wish to participate in tangible remembrances for the Turnbulls have several opportunities:
  • A joint gift from the congregation. Donations should be given by Wednesday, October 7, to Charles Webb. Donations should not be given to the church, because this is a gift directly from us to Gordon and Betsy. You may give Charles your gift when you see him at church or call him at 423-247-7557 to make other arrangements.
  • An audio quilt. You record your spoken wishes, stories, or memories, and we sew them together to warm Gordon and Betsy for years to come. To record your message, simply follow the three steps below:
    1. Call LifeOnRecord at 1-800-606-0697by Wednesday, October 7.
    2. When prompted, enter FPC's invitation number: 15587.
    3. Record your message after the tone, then either hang up or press the # key. Pressing the # key gives you options to listen to your recording, accept your recording, or re-record it.
  • A scrapbook. Karen Boone is collecting pictures and letters to present to Gordon and Betsy as a remembrance of our lives in faith together. If you would like to keep your letter confidential, please seal it in an envelope. The pictures will also be incorporated into a video that will be shown at the celebration. Pictures should be given to Karen no later than Monday, October 5, and letters by Wednesday, October 7.If you miss seeing Karen at church, you can call her at 423-538-8423 to make other arrangements.
Still, it would be hard to find anything more tangible than your presence at the party! Please mark the date and time on your calendar and plan to be there with bells on! You will not only add to the evening's music but also leaven our loss.
Stewardship Series Continues
In our adult learning segment next Wednesday evening, September 30, Gordon Turnbull will present the second program in a three-part series on stewardship. We will gather in the Fellowship Hall at 5:30 for dinner, and the adult program will follow at 6:20. Wednesday Night Kids and Student Ministries small groups will meet at 6:00. Please join us!
Serve with Sharing Christ Downtown Mission

We want you to know about an opportunity to serve the hungry in downtown Bristol on Saturday, October 10. You can cook food ahead of time, pack sack lunches, or serve and clean up. If you can help in any way, please fill out and return the bulletin insert you will soon find in worship, or contact Tammy Connolly, our coordinator for this effort, at 423-968-3831 or lconn4691@btes.tv.
At last check, in addition to servers, we also needed nine chicken casseroles, six large slaws, five large cans of green beans, and dinner rolls, as well as sandwich bread, fruit, snack cakes, peanut butter and jam for 75 bag lunches.
The Sharing Christ Mission is located on the corner of State and Sixth streets. Our final opportunity to serve in 2015 will be Thanksgiving weekend. Thank you for your care and service!
Food Pantry Holds Open House October 11
Our Fusion kids packed boxes of food at the Pantry in July.

The Board of Directors of the Bristol Emergency Food Pantry cordially invite you to their 50th Anniversary Celebration Open House from 2:00 to 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, October 11. It will be a chance to meet the board members and to see the Pantry and how its mission is carried out. The Pantry is located at 21 Washington Street (behind the train station) in Bristol, Virginia.
The Bristol Ministerial Association organized the Pantry to provide three days of food for hungry people. Last year, the Pantry served more than 14,000 individuals, many of them children and older adults. Clients from both sides of Bristol may come to the Pantry once a month. Having begun operation in 1965, it now has two part-time employees and many volunteers. It depends on donations of food and funds from local churches, businesses, individuals, and two local food drives, the Boy Scout drive in the fall and the Postal Workers drive in the spring. For more information, please contact Jim White at 423-571-4449.
Cheer Neighborhood Children
We are collecting boxes of original and multigrain Cheerios for neighborhood schoolchildren who cannot afford to bring snacks from home. We want all the young students at Fairmount Elementary School to get the energy boost they need to stay focused in the afternoon. You can help by bringing in one or more boxes of Cheerios and placing them in the little red house in the Fellowship Hallway. We appreciate it, and so will our hungry young friends!
Turning True from East to West

Thanks to the autumnal equinox, Jim White may mow our church lawn from due east to due west this week. Next week, JB Madison must approach the same task from a different angle as the planet slides back into old habits. Spinning in the same space for so long does carve such a rut.
We usually mow through the month of October and sometimes into November. To join the team, call Randy Cook at 423-956-1541 or email him at npolecook@aol.com. If you've never used a Scag mower before, he will be happy to show you how.
