New Ministry Opportunity in Early Worship: Proclaim!
"For what we proclaim is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord."-2 Corinthians 4:5
You are invited to participate in Proclaim, a new worship team at FPC!
WHO: Fusion (5th and 6th grades), youth, and adults
WHAT: The Proclaim team will read scripture or lead responsive readings during the 8:30 Sunday service. Shannan Miller, the early worship coordinator, will send you an email with the scripture or other reading for the Sunday on which you will serve, and you will review and prepare it on your own time.
WHERE: Fellowship Hall
WHEN: 8:30 on Sunday morning, on a rotation basis
WHY: To enrich our worship time together and offer the opportunity for service in the church by involving more people in worship leadership.
HOW: To sign up, email Shannan at smiller@fpcbristol.org, or send her your email information on Facebook messaging.
Children and Youth to Present Musical August 30
Our talented FPC children and youth, from rising second graders through high schoolers, have been preparing the musical Table for Five ... Thousand: The Miracle of the Loaves and Fishes, to present to our congregation during our single service of worship Sunday, August 30. They have been memorizing lines and rehearsing their music all month under the direction of Vicki Fey. This exciting musical event will complement our EPIC lesson for the day, "Filled Full!"
Participants and parents, please note: After two good blocking rehearsals, we will do a couple of run-throughs next Wednesday, August 26, and then have our final dress rehearsal on Saturday, August 29, at 10:00 a.m. in the sanctuary. T-shirts (part of the costume) have been ordered and will be ready by dress rehearsal, if not before.
Children's Bells, Savior's Singers Children's Choir, and Youth Bells will not begin regular Wednesday rehearsals until after the musical.
Wednesday Night Adult Program: Urban Promise Report
This summer, Dan Kreiss led a team of FPC youth and adults in a weeklong mission with Urban Promise in Camden, New Jersey. Urban Promise's mission is to "equip Camden's children and young adults with the skills necessary for academic achievement, life management, spiritual growth, and Christian leadership. [The organization strives] to fulfill this mission through after-school programs, summer camps, two schools, experiential learning, job training, and a host of other programs that challenge youth to develop and realize their potential." Come join us next Wednesday evening, August 26, to hear how God has changed lives through this trip.
We will gather in the Fellowship Hall at 5:30 for dinner, and the adult program will follow at 6:20. Wednesday Night Kids will meet at 6:00. Student Ministries small groups will resume meetings September 2.
Fairmount Needs Reading Buddies
The Reading Buddy program launched last year for kindergarten students at Fairmount Elementary School has been so successful that the school is expanding it to serve first grade students as well. The school is now recruiting volunteers for the 2015-2016 program.
Reading Buddies are adult volunteers who meet with an assigned student once a week to read together or take part in other activities to build reading skills. This program both improves a child's reading ability and builds a crucial relationship with a caring adult. As Dr. James Comer of Yale University observed, "No significant learning occurs without a significant relationship."
An organizational and orientation meeting for this year's program will be held next Thursday, August 27, at 6:00 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. For more information, please contact school liaison Kay Ward at wardk@btcs.org or (423) 652-9251.
Volunteer Opportunities at BRMC
Bristol Regional Medical Center is seeking volunteers to work four hours a week in one of several capacities. If you can help, please contact Becky Blevins, manager of the BRMC Volunteer Services Department, at 423-844-2831. The hospital is located at 1 Medical Park Boulevard in Bristol.
Considering Nominations for Elders and Deacons

PCUSA seal small We are beginning the process of nominating church officers for the coming year, and we welcome your suggestions of those members whom you see as particularly gifted for serving as elders or deacons. We ask that you submit names as soon as possible, and no later than Sunday, August 30. Nominating forms will be available at the church and online here.

The members of the 2015 Officer Nominating Committee are Tom Faucette, Parker Sword, Andrew Beck, Jackie Burt, and John Connor.

Session of Elders

The governing body of First Presbyterian Church is the Session, nominated and elected by the congregation. Together with ministers of the Word and Sacrament, they exercise leadership, government, and discipline and have responsibilities for the life of this church as well as of the church at large, including ecumenical relationships.

The Book of Order offers the following guidance on this office: "Congregations should elect [as elders] persons of wisdom and maturity of faith, having demonstrated skills in leadership and being compassionate in spirit. Ruling elders are so named not because they 'lord it over' the congregation (Matt. 20:25), but because they are chosen by the congregation to discern and measure its fidelity to the Word of God, and to strengthen and nurture its faith and life."

The Session of First Presbyterian Church is composed of fifteen elders who serve on a three-year rotation. Annette Tudor is the current Clerk of Session; Gordon Turnbull serves as Moderator. The following members now serve as elders of First Presbyterian Church:

Deacons

The Diaconate, or Board of Deacons, is another body of officers ministering in the church. It is the first duty of deacons to minister to those who are in need, to the sick, to the friendless, and to any who may be in distress, both within and beyond the community of faith.

The Book of Order offers the following guidance on this office: "The ministry of deacon as set forth in Scripture is one of compassion, witness, and service, sharing in the redeeming love of Jesus Christ for the poor, the hungry, the sick, the lost, the friendless, the oppressed, those burdened by unjust policies or structures, or anyone in distress. Persons of spiritual character, honest repute, exemplary lives, brotherly and sisterly love, sincere compassion, and sound judgment should be chosen for this ministry.

Give Here, Help Here!

The Marsh Bloodmobile will be in our front parking lot from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, August 26. Come a little early for the Wednesday evening program, or stay a little late, and help Marsh Regional collect the 100 units of blood needed locally every day! You will be aiding patients in 16 medical facilities and four cancer centers in Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia. There's a t-shirt in it for you!
Family Promise Rotation Coming Up in September

We will take our turn among our sister churches in hosting families in the Family Promise of Bristol program from the evening of Sunday, September 13, through the early morning of Sunday, September 20. We are asking for your help in caring for our houseguests.

Food
We need people to bring in breakfast items or prepared dinners. Breakfast items and supplies should be brought to the church and left in the little kitchen by Sunday, September 13. Dinner should be brought in hot and ready at 5:30 each evening from Sunday through Saturday. This is most easily done by a family or a team.
Dinner Hosts
Dinner hosts come to the church by 5:30 to welcome our guests, eat with them, and stay until the evening hosts arrive at 8:30. Hint: some people find it easy to fix dinner and stay to host.
Overnight Hosts
Overnight hosts arrive at the church by 8:30 p.m., spend the night, and help with continental breakfast the next morning. Guests leave the church around 7:00 a.m., except on Saturday, when they leave a little later.
Laundry
On the morning of Sunday, September 20, we will have piles of sheets, towels, and comforters to wash with bleach and return to the Family Promise Closet at the church. Many hands make light work!
Contact Information
To volunteer, ask a question, or make a suggestion, please contact Scottie Bales by email, text, or phone at 423-360-5357 or scottie@rtherapeutics.com. Thank you so much for your love and hospitality to our guests!
Student Fellowship Kicks Off This Sunday

All middle and high school students are invited to meet at the church at 6:00 p.m. this Sunday, August 23, for the Student Fellowship kickoff! Parents of students are encouraged to come with them to experience Student Fellowship and attend a parent breakout session that will inform them of events coming up in this school year. Join us for a great night of worship, dinner, games, and cotton candy!
Seventh Graders: Join Our New Confirmation Class!
All rising seventh graders are invited to participate in the confirmation course that will begin Sunday, September 13, and continue through April. Participants will learn as they raise and discuss hard questions about faith, God, and more. This course prepares seventh and eighth graders to confirm the vows of their baptism by professing their faith in Jesus Christ.
The confirmation journey is a two-year experience during middle school. Students will be invited to confirm their faith at the end of their eighth grade year. While both grades will meet together each week, our eighth graders will share in extra activities that prepare them for their confirmation in May.
As you learn through discussion and activities, you will find this to be a time of growing as an individual and as part of a group. You will play games, watch videos, and meet friends in new ways. And in addition to your teachers, you will have two mentors, an adult and a high school student, to help you as you go through this process.
Class will take place during the Sunday School hour, from 9:45 to 10:45. We will meet in the Big Room in the Youth Wing. Because class attendance is very important, we ask you to make a commitment to be here every Sunday. If you miss, we can help you make it up, but we trust that you will take this commitment seriously.
If you plan to take part in confirmation, please email Katie Arnold at karnold@fpcbristol.org by Thursday, September 3.
Rain or Shine

This week Larry Connolly is making sure everything is shipshape and Bristol fashion for the start of the program year. Roger Sikorski keeps us trim next week. We will probably mow through the month of October. To join the team, call Randy Cook at 423-956-1541 or email him at npolecook@aol.com. If you've never used a Scag mower before, Randy will be happy to show you how.
EPIC: Treasure Hunt!

This Sunday, August 23, we will go on a "Treasure Hunt!" as our EPIC journey through The Jesus Storybook Bible brings us to the story of the talents. Please join us!

Sunday's music participants: Sanctuary Choir.
Joseph Clokey
Sunday's music: Joseph Clokey's anthem, "Treasures in Heaven," has been the standard musical setting of Matthew 6:19-21 since it was published in 1941. Clokey (1890-1960) was the son of a Presbyterian pastor and educated at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, where he later served as a music professor and dean. He composed a considerable quantity of both sacred and secular music; this anthem remains probably his best-known work. The Sanctuary Choir offers this setting as we reflect on the meaning of the Kingdom of God.
Jubilate Youth Choir (grades 7-12) will kick off the program year with regular Sunday rehearsals beginning this Sunday, August 23, 5:15-6:00 p.m. Student Fellowship will begin that same evening. If you're not participating in the musical but would like to join the choir, we will begin rehearsing for World Communion Sunday and Christmas, among other music.
