Brazil Mission Trip Set for Late May!

Paint brightens walls and moods!

A wonderful opportunity to support our church's partnership with the Felipe Camarão Presbyterian Church and preschool in northeast Brazil is available to anyone who senses a call to join us as we travel May 29 through June 7.

The trip will include members of our church's senior high fellowship as well as a few of their parents and advisors. We will also be joined by two former PC(USA) missionaries to Brazil, Paul and Linda Fahnestock. On this trip we will help with general repairs and spruce up the facility and perhaps families' homes, work with the children at the school, and participate in various sporting and evangelistic activities with the teens around the community. Most of all, the trip will serve to encourage and strengthen the bond between our churches that was forged nearly fourteen years ago.

Whether you have participated before or feel called for the first time to a deeper personal connection with our brothers and sisters in Brazil, we would love to tell you more about our plans. Please contact John Vann at 423-360-1153 by Monday, January 19, if you are interested in exploring this further.

Expanded Opportunities for Caring Meals

In recent years our church has been blessed with a vital ministry of support for new mothers through Heart to Heart, our women's ministry. Volunteers receive email notice of days for which meals are needed for families with new children. The volunteer can choose a day to offer a meal, and the calendar registers the commitment. This ministry, coordinated by Lensey Richardson for Heart to Heart, occurs through an online service called MealBaby. Anyone interested in joining this list of potential servers may email Lensey (lasinjc@yahoo.com) to sign up.

Encouraged by the good response to this vehicle, our Board of Deacons would like to expand the scope of such caring meals. If you are interested in providing the occasional meal for those who are recovering at home from illness or recent hospitalization, please email Dave Welch (dwelch@fpcbristol.org). Your name will be placed on a list of those to be notified of serving opportunities through a separate online service, Lotsa Helping Hands.

Please note that signing up as a potential server does not obligate anyone for any particular day or meal. You choose whether or not to respond to a particular notification. You may also "tag-team" with others to prepare and serve a meal. We hope that these mechanisms help more people offer and more people receive the caring love of our church.

Sunday's EPIC Begins at the Beginning

Last week we began our new churchwide study series, EPIC: Through the Bible with Jesus. The story for this Sunday, January 18, will be "The Beginning: A Perfect Home," inspired by the first two chapters of Genesis. Sermon texts throughout the course of this series will be taken from the children's book, The Jesus Storybook Bible. If you have not already picked up your preordered copy from the front office, please do so soon.

Wednesday Program Asks, Who Is Jesus?

Dr. Mark Hutton

Dr. Mark Hutton returns next Wednesday evening to continue our discussion of who we think Jesus is. Dr. Hutton is a Presbyterian minister and the first Pastoral Research Fellow at Tactical Faith. Please join us January 21 at 5:30 for dinner in the Fellowship Hall and stay for a lively conversation at 6:15.

Student small groups and Wednesday Night Kids will meet as usual at 6:00. You can learn more about our speaker and Tactical Faith at www.intheperpetualruins.com and http://www.tacticalfaith.com/what-we-do/.

Bloodmobile at FPC Next Wednesday Evening

The Marsh Bloodmobile will be in our front parking lot Wednesday, January 21, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., a convenience for those who come for our fellowship dinner and program. Give blood and receive a T-shirt, coupons for local businesses, and the pleasure of knowing you are helping to save lives.

Let's Get Rolling!

The FPC Deacons invite the congregation to an afternoon of bowling on Sunday, January 25, from 3:00 to 5:00 at Belmont Lanes. All ages and skill levels should come prepared for serious fun. The bowling alley is located at 100 Belmont Drive on the Tennessee side of town, and its telephone number is 423-764-5135.

Registration for Women's Retreat Begins Sunday
Lindsay Fooshee

Registration begins this Sunday, January 18, for our annual women's retreat at Blowing Rock Conference Center! We are excited to have Lindsay Fooshee, Christian thinker, blogger, and mom, as our speaker this year. During this Heart to Heart event February 27 through March 1, Lindsay will lead us through a consideration of Paul's encouraging letter to his friends in Philippi and remind us of the joy of the good news of Jesus.

Lindsay and her husband, John, serve Jesus in Johnson City by planting churches and raising a family, seeking to live out discipleship in both their church and their home. Lindsay spends most of her time with her four kids, who challenge her to soak up the daily joys of toddlers and teenagers at the same time. She holds an M.A. in Christian Thought from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary and enjoys teaching and writing about what she's learning. She blogs regularly about discipleship at kitchenstool.wordpress.com and writes an online devotional for girls and their mentors at www.hisgirlstogether.com.

Be sure to mark your calendars for this wonderful weekend! Forms and flyers are available throughout the church.
Heart to Heart Read and Feed January 31

All women of the church are invited to Heart to Heart's annual Read and Feed, scheduled for 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., Saturday, January 31, in Jennifer Kennedy's home. Amber Warhurst, Billie Whisnant, and Betsy Turnbull will present books. Bring a friend!

Evening Meetings for FPC Students

Sunday Night Student Fellowship meets on (wait for it!) Sunday evenings. All students in seventh through twelfth grades are invited to the Youth Wing and Fellowship Hall at 6:00 for dinner, games, worship, learning, and fellowship. We hope to see you there!

Student Ministries Small Groups meet on Wednesday evenings. These same-age, same-gender groups meet once a week for fun, sharing, and a devotion. They are intended for relationship building and walking together through life's ups and downs. Small groups meet at the church from 6:00 to 7:00, after the fellowship dinner. Join us!

Vanilla Wafers for Fairmount Students

Everyone needs a lift in the afternoon, but not everyone can afford an afternoon snack. For that reason, the Neighborhood Initiatives Steering Committee is collecting vanilla wafers for children at Fairmount Elementary School who would otherwise go without at snacktime. The committee is asking us to bring in boxes of vanilla wafers and put them in the Little Red House in the Fellowship Hallway. The committee will take them to the school, and the teachers will divide them into snack portions as needed. Thank you for the sweetness of your heart and your cookies!

Our Winter Weather Policy

When the weather is frigid or the roads are messy, FPC will follow the lead of the Bristol, Tennessee, city schools. Please tune in to a local radio or television station to learn what that may be. We will make every effort to gather for worship on Sundays, even in severe weather.

Music Notes

Sunday's music participants: Sanctuary Choir; Gary Robertz, clarinet.

David Herman

Sunday's music: The text of our anthem, "As Pants the Hart for Cooling Streams," is a metrical version of Psalm 42 that first appeared in Tate and Brady's New Version of the Psalms of David, published in 1696. The Psalmist is seeking refreshment in God, longing for the comfort that Adam and Eve experienced in the garden. The music is a Scottish folk melody that was adapted as a hymn tune in the early 19th century; it is best known for its use with the text "Alas! And Did My Savior Bleed." The musical arrangement is by David Herman, who recently retired from the school of music of the University of Delaware. The music picks up the pastoral nature of the text and adds a solo clarinet, an instrument composers often use in conjunction with peaceful images of creation and particularly shepherds.

Jason W. Krug

Montreat bio: Jason W. Krug (b. 1978), handbell assistant and Middler Handbells Director, is a native of Indianapolis, Indiana. He holds a degree in music from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Jason is a full-time freelance composer, arranger, clinician, and teacher. Since his first publication in 2006, he has had more than 180 compositions and arrangements accepted for handbells, piano, strings, choir, and organ. His works have been featured at numerous festivals and workshops in the United States and beyond. In his spare time, Jason enjoys writing fiction; he has spent several years working on a young adult fantasy series, The Sadonian Chronicles.
