All Saints' Celebration This Sunday

We will celebrate the communion of All Saints with communion at both services this Sunday, November 2. We will observe our regular Sunday morning schedule of Cherub Choir rehearsal at 9:00 and Sunday School at 9:45. Please join us!

Daylight Saving Time Ends Sunday

Daylight Saving Time ends at 2 a.m. this Sunday, November 2. Remember to set your clock back one hour when you retire Saturday night. We'll see you on standard time Sunday morning!

Combined Service for Stewardship Dedication November 9

We will have a combined worship service, with Kids' Kirk, for our stewardship dedication next Sunday, November 9. Sunday School will begin 15 minutes early, at 9:30. The worship service will begin at 10:30 a.m. in the sanctuary, and Kids' Kirk will begin at the same time in room 32 (Education Wing). The Cherub Choir will not rehearse. We will hear bluegrass music by our Praise Team and share a congregational meal after worship. Please join us!

Suggestions Welcome for Deacon or Elder

PCUSA seal small

Our nominating process for next year's officers is under way, and we welcome your suggestions of those members whom you see as particularly gifted for serving in these capacities.

The Book of Order offers the following guidance on these offices of ministry. "The ministry of deacon as set forth in Scripture is one of compassion, witness, and service, sharing in the redeeming love of Jesus Christ for the poor, the hungry, the sick, the lost, the friendless, the oppressed, those burdened by unjust policies or structures, or anyone in distress. Persons of spiritual character, honest repute, exemplary lives, brotherly and sisterly love, sincere compassion, and sound judgment should be chosen for this ministry.

"Congregations should elect [as elders] persons of wisdom and maturity of faith, having demonstrated skills in leadership and being compassionate in spirit. Ruling elders are so named not because they 'lord it over' the congregation (Matt. 20:25), but because they are chosen by the congregation to discern and measure its fidelity to the Word of God, and to strengthen and nurture its faith and life."

Suggestion forms are available throughout the church, or you may email your suggestion to the attention of the Officer Nominating Committee at gturnbull@fpcbristol.org.

November: Let's Talk about God
Dave Welch will teach all three weeks of our Wednesday evening programs in November. His theme will be Conversations about God, and he will lead a Biblical and theological discussion of the nature (or natures) of God. Join us at 5:30 on November 5 for a fellowship dinner of our perennial favorite, Snow on the Mountain, and stay for the program at 6:20. Student Ministries small groups and Wednesday Night Kids will meet as usual at 6:00.
EPIC New Study Series to Start the New Year

Coming in January! Continuing our tradition of learning together in fellowship, we will begin the new year with a new churchwide study series called EPIC: Through the Bible with Jesus. Sermon texts will be taken from The Jesus Storybook Bible. You will find order forms for free copies of this book in Sunday's bulletin.

Tuesday Evening Bible Study Ponders Psalms

Betsy Turnbull's inductive Heart to Heart Bible study will continue their study of selected psalms next Tuesday. On the list for November 4 are Psalms 37, 46, and 47. The group meets in room 123 at 7:00 p.m. on first and third Tuesdays. All FPC women are warmly invited and encouraged to bring a friend.

Hoedown Hit

Sunday night's hoedown was a hands-down hit. We had some great barbecue then danced to homegrown bluegrass. Everyone had a blast!

Leaf Day Falls on November 8

rake and leaves

Our annual Leaf Day will be next Saturday, November 8. We are recruiting people to serve on Leaf Teams armed with rakes, blowers, and ladders to take care of leaves and gutters. We are also looking for people who have jobs for these teams to do.

To Serve

If you are interested in serving on a Leaf Team, fill out a sign-up form (available at the church), email Gordon Turnbull at gturnbull@fpcbristol.org, or call the church office. On the morning of November 8, team members will meet at the church at 9:00 for coffee, doughnuts, and directions, then head out on their rounds. Each team should be finished by noon.

To Request Service

If you would you like a visit by a Leaf Team, please call the church office at 423-764-7176 to let us know. We will call back to confirm before the Saturday event.

Help FPC Prepare for Winter

Winter is coming. The cold truth is that our grounds need about 20 hours' worth of attention before bad weather sets in. Several areas around the church need trimming, pruning, weeding, cutting, and mulching. Volunteers can warm themselves with the fact that each chore should take only 45 minutes to an hour to complete. If you can lend a hand in the next two to three weeks, please call Tom Daniel at 423-764-7677 or email him at tomdaniel60@charter.net

Little Pretzels, Big Boost

We are collecting little pretzels to give a big boost to hungry Fairmount students. The small sticks and the small curved pretzels fit best into snack-sized portions for those of our Fairmount Elementary neighbors who can't afford snacks to see them through the afternoon. As always, please place your contributions in the little red schoolhouse in the Fellowship Hallway. Thank you!

Late Spring Mission Opportunity for Sophomores, Juniors

A mission opportunity in Brazil for FPC's tenth and eleventh grade students is coming up next spring. It is scheduled for May 29 through June 7. Interested persons are invited to join Student Ministries in the Youth Wing meeting room next Wednesday, November 5, at 7:15 p.m., to learn more about this project.

Student Fellowship: It's in the Bag

Have you ever looked at someone else and thought, "Does he/she have more ______ than I do?" Comparison is being caught in the trap of constantly asking how we measure up to others. "Do they have more money than I have?" "Do they get more attention from others?" "Are they more talented than I am?" We preoccupy ourselves with these questions, but God has a better plan. Jesus was a great storyteller. He used the story of three servants, each entrusted with a certain amount of money, to illustrate the question God would have us ask, a question that will free us from the comparison trap once and for all.
Fusion Fun November 2

We will have another fun Fusion event for our fifth and sixth grade students this Sunday, November 2, from  6:00 to 8:00 at the church. We'll share a simple meal of pizza or hot dogs and enjoy an evening of games. All fifth and sixth graders are welcome. Please join us!

Music Notes

Sunday's music participants: Sanctuary Choir.

Sunday's music: The hymn "I'll Praise My Maker" has a rich and storied history. The melody was composed in 1535 as a setting of a German translation of Psalm 119; it was influential in the later creation of both Lutheran chorales and the Psalm tunes of Calvin's Geneva. It was introduced to the English-speaking world as a setting of a metrical version of Psalm 113 in 1560, hence the tune's common name of OLD 113TH. Isaac Watts (1674-1748), while not exactly the father of English hymnody, certainly began to free it from the constraints of strictly literal versions of the Psalms that were common in the early 18th century. He had this melody in mind when he wrote his version of Psalm 146, "I'll Praise My Maker." John Wesley (1703-1791), the founder of Methodism, made a number of changes to Watts' text that remain in the accepted versions of this hymn; he so loved it that he sang it on his deathbed. The Sanctuary Choir sings an arrangement of these words with music by Lloyd Pfautsch (1921-2003). Pfautsch had a distinguished career as a church musician and composer and served on the faculty of Southern Methodist University in Dallas for 34 years. His setting reflects the joyous confidence of the words of Watts and Wesley.

David Gambrell

Montreat bio: The conference liturgist for next summer, David Gambrell, is Associate for Worship in the Presbyterian Church (USA) Office of Theology and Worship and editor of Call to Worship: Liturgy, Music, Preaching, and the Arts. He is a representative to the Consultation on Common Texts (responsible for the Revised Common Lectionary) and was an ex officio member of the Presbyterian Committee on Congregational Song (responsible for Glory to God: The Presbyterian Hymnal). David has an M.Div. from Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary and a Ph.D. in liturgical studies from Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary. He enjoys music, poetry, and hymn writing.

Children's Christmas pageant: All children from age 4 through grade 5 (grade 6 optional) may participate in the Christmas pageant, to be presented Wednesday, December 17, at 5:30 p.m. in the sanctuary. If your child is interested in taking part in the pageant but hasn't yet been to a children's choir rehearsal, feel free to contact us, or just show up! The Cherub Choir (age 4-grade 1) rehearses Sunday mornings at 9:00, and the other children's choirs rehearse on Wednesday afternoons: the Savior's Singers Children's Choir (grades 2-5) at 4:45, and the Children's Handbell Choir at 4:15. Pageant rehearsals will take place on Wednesday afternoons, as well, from 4:30 to 5:30 on November 19 and December 3 and 10.
