Meet Dr. Jerman Disasa This Sunday
Dr. Jerman Disasa

This Sunday, October 26, we will welcome to our worship a special guest, Dr. Jerman Disasa of Laurens, South Carolina. Dr. Disasa is a native of Ethiopia who was educated at the Berhane Yesus Elementary School in Dembi Dollo and was in the first graduating class of the Bethel Evangelical Secondary School. He is eager to share his experience in those schools and to communicate his gratitude for our church's deep commitment to the ministry there. Dr. Disasa will offer greetings in each worship service, and he will speak in the Fellowship Hall during the Sunday School hour for all interested in attending.

Come to the Hoedown This Sunday Evening!

Come to a hoedown in the Fellowship Hall this Sunday, October 26! We'll share a barbecue dinner then clear the floor and dance. Please join us from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. for food, fun, and fellowship! Our Deacons' Fellowship Committee will provide the barbecue and drinks. Please find yourself in the list below and bring the appropriate extra:

Last Name A-H:  dessert

Last Name I-P:  side dish

Last Name Q-Z:  salad

Come prepared to have a fine time dancing, or just tapping and clapping!

Rationale and Rally for Missions

Among missional activities we undertook in 2012, FPC members helped paint the school in Felipe Camarão.

At the invitation of our Evangelism & Outreach Committee, we have spent the month deepening our identity as disciples in mission. Our Wednesday evening programs have helped us think about how and why we connect with others about the Good News of God's love for us in Jesus Christ. Going with this flow, on October 29 we will explore short-term mission opportunities. Leaders of previous efforts will share information about short-term mission trips that could be undertaken within the next two to three years. They will describe particular challenges, costs, time required, and probable timing for each trip (month and year).

Please join us at 5:30 in the Fellowship Hall for a dinner of spaghetti with meat sauce or vegetable marinara and stay for the program at 6:20. Student Ministries small groups and Wednesday Night Kids will meet as usual at 6:00.

Help FPC Prepare for Winter

Winter is coming. The cold truth is that our grounds need about 20 hours' worth of attention before bad weather sets in. Several areas around the church need trimming, pruning, weeding, cutting, and mulching. Volunteers can warm themselves with the fact that each chore should take only 45 minutes to an hour to complete. If you can lend a hand in the next two to three weeks, please call Tom Daniel at 423-764-7677 or email him at tomdaniel60@charter.net

Sign Up to Save Lives

The Marsh Blood Services Bloodmobile will be in our front parking lot next Wednesday, October 29, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Please plan to give a pint when you come to the final segment in our program series on missions. You can drop by the Bloodmobile on your way in, or schedule a time to give, if you prefer. Sign-up forms are available at the church. In addition to the usual free T-shirt, Marsh will give each donor a coupon for a free "munchies" at Mellow Mushroom.

Little Pretzels Make a Big Difference

We are now collecting small pretzels to perk up the hungry students in our neighborhood school who can't afford snacks to see them through the afternoon. The small sticks and the small curved pretzels fit best into snack-sized portions for our Fairmount Elementary kids. As always, please place your contributions in the little red schoolhouse in the Fellowship Hallway. Thank you!

High School Party on State Street Friday Night

Freshmen through senior students are invited to a Fifth Quarter party after the Tennessee High School football game this Friday, October 24. We will gather at 9:30 p.m. at Quaker Steak & Lube on the corner of State Street and Piedmont Avenue for an evening of fun and fellowship. You will need to bring $7 for food and drinks. We will turn into pumpkins at midnight.

No Student Fellowship until November 2

Student Fellowship is taking a break until Sunday, November 2, when we will pick up part three of The Comparison Trap. Have a great break, and we'll see you later!

Upcoming Fusion Fun: Game Night November 2

Our next Fusion event for our fifth and sixth grade students is coming up fast! We'll have a game night in the Oasis room on Sunday, November 2, from  6:00 to 8:00. We'll share a simple meal of pizza or hot dogs and have a whole lot of fun! If you are in fifth or sixth grade, please join us!

Music Notes

Sunday's music participants: Sanctuary Choir, Cherub Choir (11:00 only).

John Ness Beck

Sunday's music: Isaac Watts' beloved hymn text, "Our God, Our Help in Ages Past," is a metrical version of Psalm 90. Composer John Ness Beck has combined selected verses of the King James Version of this psalm with two stanzas of the Watts hymn text to create the stirring statement of the constancy of God that is the anthem "Thou Art God!" Beck (1930-1987) was a noted choral composer and publisher whose career was centered in Columbus, Ohio.

Programs of note: The Paramount Chamber Players celebrate their tenth anniversary with a gala weekend of great music October 24-26! Artistic Director Craig Combs has commissioned arrangements of such familiar works as Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue" and a medley of Broadway tunes for all the Players, past and present. In addition, a commissioned work by three local composers (Ann Holler, Evelyn Pursley-Kopitzke, and Kenton Coe) based on poems of the late Dr. Sam Miller of Abingdon, will receive its premier. Guest artist Rachel Barker will take part in this event. The Friday night program will be at Kingsport's First Presbyterian Church at 7:30; the Saturday night gala program will take place at the Paramount in Bristol, also at 7:30; and the Sunday afternoon program will be at Sinking Spring Presbyterian Church in Abingdon at 3:00.

Children's Christmas pageant: All children from age 4 through grade 5 (grade 6 optional) may participate in the Christmas pageant to be presented Wednesday, December 17, at 5:30 p.m. in the sanctuary. If your child is interested but hasn't yet been to a children's choir rehearsal, feel free to contact us, or just show up! The Cherub Choir (age 4 through grade 1) rehearses Sunday mornings at 9:00, and the Savior's Singers Children's Choir (grades 2-5) rehearses Wednesday afternoons at 4:45, with Children's Handbells at 4:15. Pageant rehearsals will take place from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. on the following Wednesdays: November 19 and December 3 and 10.
