How You Can Help with Our Upcoming Family Promise Rotation

Our next rotation with Family Promise of Bristol, scheduled for September 28 through October 5, is approaching fast. Here is a reminder of our volunteering needs:

Food

Breakfast items and supplies. Bring these to the little kitchen by Sunday, September 28. If you can help with this or want more information, please email Scottie Bales at scottie@rtherapeutics.com.

Dinner. Bring this hot and ready each evening at 5:30. This is usually done by a family or a team. If you can help with this, please email Scottie as above.

Hosts

Dinner hosts. Come to the church by 5:30 to welcome our guests, eat with them, and stay until the evening hosts arrive at 8:30. Some people find it easy to fix dinner and stay on as evening hosts. If you are interested in this, please email Nancy Allerton at nja0510@gmail.com.

Overnight hosts. Come to the church by 8:30 p.m., spend the night, and help with a continental breakfast in the morning. Guests leave the church around 7:00 a.m., except on Saturday, when they leave a little later. If you can help with this, please contact Dan Gross at dan.c.gross@gmail.com.

Laundry

On Sunday morning, October 5, there will be piles and piles of sheets, towels, and comforters that must be washed with bleach and returned to the Family Promise Closet. We need volunteers to all take a pile home or to a laundromat and return them ready for next time. Scottie is your contact for this job.

Thank you so much for your love and hospitality to these families! If you have any questions or suggestions, please feel free to call or text Scottie Bales at 423-360-5357 or email her at Scottie@rtherapeutics.com

Join Us Wednesday Evening for Ephesians 4

In our next Wednesday evening program, Dr. Laura Ong of the King University faculty will lead a discussion of the fourth chapter of Ephesians, as we continue our churchwide study of Paul's epistle to the Christian community at Ephesus. Please join us for this adult learning session at 6:20 p.m., September 10, in the Fellowship Hall. Come early and enjoy intergenerational fellowship over a shared meal at 5:30. Student Fellowship small groups and Wednesday Night Kids will meet separately at 6:00. We are looking forward to an evening of fellowship and learning with you!

Volunteers Needed

We are looking for once-a-month volunteers to prepare food, set tables, and clean up on Wednesdays. We feed approximately 140 people at each dinner. For more information or to volunteer, contact Ruthie Blair at 423-797-1815 or Ruthiebblair@gmail.com

Session Meets to Receive New Members Sept. 14

PCUSA seal small There will be a special meeting of the First Presbyterian Church Session to receive new members Sunday, September 14, at 10:20 a.m., in the chapel. Anyone who wishes to join FPC is invited to attend.

Men's Breakfast Next Saturday

The next gathering of the men of the church and their friends for breakfast, Bible study, and good fellowship will be at 8:00 a.m., September 13, in the Fellowship Hall. We look forward to sharing this time with you!

Men's Retreat Planned for Halloween Weekend

The Men's Ministry is once again sponsoring its popular service and fellowship retreat to Washington, D.C., and this year it is planned for the weekend of October 31. The FPC men will travel Friday evening, work at the Capital Area Food Bank on Saturday, take in the city that night, then worship at National Presbyterian Church Sunday morning and return that evening. There is so much to see and do, and such a satisfying combination of work and play, that you won't want to miss it!

Informational flyers with registration forms are available throughout the church. The cost of $60 covers travel; two nights' lodging in the Pilgrimage, the hostel of the Church of the Pilgrims; and some meals (dinner on Saturday is not included). Reserve your spot with a $10 deposit. Scholarships are available.

You will need to pack a sleeping bag (or sheets and a blanket), a pillow, a towel, toiletries, ear plugs, work clothes and gloves, and comfortable shoes. Please let Dave Welch know if you are willing to drive your own car; we will pay for the gas. If you have any questions, please contact Dave at dwelch@fpcristol.org.

Student Fellowship Kicks Off This Sunday

Student Fellowship kicks off this Sunday, September 7! We invite all students in seventh through twelfth grades and their parents to join us at the church at 6:00 p.m. for dinner, games, worship, learning, and fellowship. We'll wrap it up at 8:00 p.m.

Students, bring your friends! Parents, you will have the opportunity to see what happens at Student Fellowship and take part in a parent information breakout.

And by the way, we're going to need to feed these teens through the program year! We are asking families to sign up to provide an evening's dinner, either home cooked or fast food. Families are invited to share the load with other families and to either donate the food or turn in receipts for reimbursement. Dinner is served at 6:00 p.m. at the church, where Student Fellowship meets. Deidre Pendley is Dinner Coordinator, and she cannot wait to hear from you! Please contact her at pendleyd@btcs.org. Thank you for helping us make Student Fellowship fantastic!

Fifth Quarter Party Next Friday

High school students can enjoy another Fifth Quarter party after the Tennessee High School football game, Friday, September 12. We will meet at Velocity (515 Melrose Street in Bristol) at 9:30 p.m. for dodge ball, fun, and fellowship.

Heart to Heart Fall Gathering Next Month

Can you believe it's nearly time for our annual Heart to Heart Fall Gathering? We have scheduled it for Thursday, October 2, from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. in the chapel. Ronda Paulson will be our speaker again, this time on the topic of "Let's Get Real." Save the date!

Hemming the Cuff of Summer

Summer is beginning to fray at the edges, but the grass still holds up its many heads. JB Madison is scheduled to mend this garment this week, and Jim Mayden will do a stint of darning next week. Our volunteers will continue to mow while the grass grows, possibly into November. If you'd like to help, Randy Cook will be happy to add you to our mowing team or, if you prefer, to our substitutes list. You can reach him at 423-956-1541 or npolecook@aol.com.

Music Notes

Sunday's music participants: Sanctuary Choir.

Suzanne Toolan

Sunday's music: The anthem is the hymn "I Am the Bread of Life." According to Paul Westermeyer: "This [text] and its tune were written by Suzanne Toolan (b. 1927) in 1966 when she was a high school teacher. Her room was next to the infirmary 'where kids came to avoid exams and other pressures of the school world.' One day during her free period she composed it. When the bell came for the next period, she 'tore the manuscript in half thinking that the music was rather sentimental and [she] would have a go at it later.' However, as she was leaving her classroom, she was 'confronted by a little blond freshman who came out of the infirmary saying, 'What was that? It was beautiful.' 'I went,' she says, 'immediately to the wastebasket, took it out, taped it together, and it has had a life of its own ever since.'" The text of the hymn is drawn from the Gospel of John, and the stanzas speak to how Jesus feeds us. The power of this song is evidenced by its wide popularity; it has been translated into more than 20 languages.

Calling all youth: Youth Bells has had three rehearsals already! More folks are welcome, but let Steve know ahead of time so he can plan music (grades 6 through 12). Jubilate Youth Choir will kick off with Sunday night Student Ministries on September 7 at 5:15. Student Ministries fellowship time will follow rehearsal.
