July 17 & 24, 2014
FPC Embarks on Holy Conversations

PCUSA seal smallFirst Presbyterian Church is a rich community of faith composed of individuals with a wide range of talents. More than ten years ago, a committee appointed by the Session developed a mission and a vision for our congregation to direct our application of these gifts to the glory of God.

Mission Statement

As disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ, we are a community of believers, called by God to glorify and serve God through worship and witness.

Empowered by the Holy Spirit, we reach out to share God's saving love and grace with people in Bristol and throughout the world.

Vision Statement

By the grace of God, the love of Jesus Christ, and the power of the Holy Spirit, we seek:

  • To offer worship that invites and gathers a growing and diverse community of participants to celebrate God's glory and respond to God's grace, providing opportunities for both contemporary and traditional styles of worship.
  • To become more effective and intentional in reaching out to our neighbors locally and globally with a deepening commitment each year of spiritual, financial, and human resources.
  • To provide an exemplary ministry of Christian education and spiritual nurture, so that a growing number of people of all ages can find resources for growth in discipleship to Jesus Christ.

At Gordon Turnbull's suggestion, the Session established a committee to reexamine how our church is living this mission and vision today and how our strengths as a congregation enable us to consider new opportunities for service in our dynamic local and global communities. Members of the committee are Aaron Brooks, Peggy Hill, Jennifer Kennedy, Shannan Miller, Lensey Richardson, Gordon Turnbull, John Vann, Paul Warhurst, and Charles Webb.

The committee of nine will embark on an exploration of these important questions guided by Holy Conversations: Strategic Planning as a Spiritual Practice for Congregations, studying as a committee and facilitating opportunities for engagement with the congregation as a whole. The objective of the exercise is to better understand our gifts throughout the church's ministry and how best to unify our efforts in responding to God's call.

The committee will reach out for your input in the coming months of this yearlong effort and provide regular updates through Windows. Please pray for the committee's discernment and for our church as we strive to continue being the beacon of hope and love that is our legacy, by the grace and for the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Tiptoe through the Bluegrass at Early Worship July 27

Come tap your toes to bluegrass in the 8:30 worship service on July 27! We will have a special set for the service, complete with banjo, dobro, mandolin, guitar, bass, and drums, and we will sing a bunch of the old toe-tapping hymns, such as "I'll Fly Away" and "I Saw the Light." No room for crabgrass at this service!

Bristol Faith in Action Thanks You!

Dear Members of FPC:

Thank you so much for your recent donation of personal care packs to our ministry. They mean that our clients and their families will be able to keep themselves clean, something we often take for g ranted but shouldn't. This will be a blessing for the people we serve, many of whom lack the cash to purchase these very basic necessities, which can't be obtained with food stamps.

Christ commands us to feed the hungry and give drink to the thirsty. At BFIA, we think it important to give them soap and toilet paper too.

We thank God for your generosity.

In His Name,

Kimberly Brubaker Bradley

Board of Directors, Bristol Faith in Action

Share Christ Downtown This Saturday

Our next opportunity to serve with the Sharing Christ Ministry on State Street is this Saturday, July 19. We need volunteers to prepare and serve chicken casserole and marinated slaw from recipes they can get from the church office. We also need rolls for that meal, and peanut butter, jam, and sandwich bread for 80 sack lunches, as well as the Ziploc and paper bags to put them in. We also need volunteers to make the sandwiches and fill the bags.

For more information or to volunteer, call Tammy Connolly at 423-968-3831, 423-914-9848, or 276-628-7213 or email her at lconn4691@btes.tv.

Food Pantry Needs Stocking Coordinator

Bristol Emergency Food Pantry is seeking candidates for the job of stocking coordinator. Duties include purchasing food, delivering from the supplier to the Pantry, and keeping shelves stocked. Applicants must have a pickup truck or a van. Compensation is a modest salary and a gas allowance. Interested persons should contact Jim White at 423-571-4449.

If you haven't yet retrieved the baskets or other decorative items you so generously let us use to set the scene for Vacation Bible School this summer, please stop by Lilly Osborne's office and pick them up as soon as possible. We need to clear the decks for the new program year. Thank you!

Middle Schoolers Jump in the Lake July 20

Middle schoolers are invited to an afternoon of fun in the sun this Sunday, July 20! We will meet at the church at noon and head out to South Holston Lake with our swimsuits and towels. Friends are welcome! We'll gather at the Lake View dock and enjoy water toys and fun. We'll return to the church at 5:00 p.m. for pickup. Parents who would like to help with food and drinks should contact Katie Arnold.
Student Ministry Takes a Hike July 23

Seventh- through twelfth-graders are invited to take a hike on Wednesday, July 23. We will meet at the church at 1:00 p.m. Friends are welcome! Students who would like to swim should wear a bathing suit (tankini or one-piece, no Speedos) under their clothes. Bring a backpack with a towel, snacks, and water. Our estimated return time is 6:00 p.m.

Picture Our Florida Youth Trip: Work, Worship, and Fun!

The FPC youth are back from a few weeks of mission work and just plain fun in Florida. The pictures below show the highlights of the trip.

FPC youth fed breakfast to more than 400 homeless people at the Clara White Mission in Jacksonville.

We sorted garments at a clothing distribution ministry in Jacksonville.

These ladies got to be personal shoppers for the customers.

We cleaned school supplies to be given to low-income schools in Jacksonville.

We ran a baseball clinic for inner city children in Jacksonville ...

... and worked at Camp Angelwood, a special needs camp for ages 5-23.

We attended BigStuf camp at Panama City Beach.
And here we are together in the sun!

Su-u-ummertime, and the Livin' Is Easy

Fish are jumpin', but the grass won't get high. On lawn patrol through the rest of the month are Keith Blair, David Moore, and Roger Sikorski. To help us keep the church grounds looking their best, call Randy Cook at 423-956-1541 or email him at npolecook@aol.com. He will add you to our team of volunteer mowers or, if you prefer, to our substitutes list.

Music Notes

Music participants: June 20, Nancy and Randy Cook; June 27, George Huber and Tim Landis.

Jean Anne Shafferman

Sunday's music: Special music at 11:00 this Sunday, June 20, will be a duet sung by Nancy and Randy Cook that combines two spirituals, "I've Got Peace Like a River" and "Kum ba Yah."  Jean Anne Shafferman (b. 1953), who has worked extensively as a composer and performer and now works as a music editor, made the arrangement, which artfully combines two reflective songs from the African-American spiritual tradition.

The music for July 27 will be two duets featuring baritone George Huber and bass Tim Landis. These selections, "Lord, I Want to Be a Christian" and "Give Me Jesus," are also arrangements of beloved African-American spirituals, in this case by composer Lloyd Larson (b. 1954).  He, too, has an extensive collection of published works, particularly choral anthems.  This body of work has provided rich inspiration for composers and for our worship.

Celebration service: Lee Street Baptist Church is hosting "Music Praise Day" this Sunday, June 20, at 4:00 p.m. in their sanctuary. Various music participants from our community will be participating, including Vicki and Steve Fey, who will play two four-hand piano hymn arrangements.  All are welcome.

Montreat 2015: And the countdown begins! The Feys (conference directors), along with the rest of the Montreat 2015 Worship and Music Conference planning committee (which includes Meg Flannagan), will be spending a good portion of the next 300+ days finalizing the daily schedule, working on worship planning, monitoring which buildings on the conference center campus will be under renovation, making sure faculty contracts are returned in a timely fashion, and the list goes on and on!

The theme for the 2015 conferences, sponsored by the Presbyterian Association of Musicians (PAM), is You Are My Beloved, journeying from the Baptism of the Lord to the Transfiguration.  Daily worship will reflect these and other familiar stories, including Jesus' miracle at the wedding in Cana.  Week 1 of the conference is scheduled for June 21-26,  and week 2 for June 28-July 3. Online registration begins in mid-November.

There will be an early-bird discounted registration fee this year, and scholarships will be available through the PAM website.  Check out our conference website, crafted by Meg Flannagan, for more details; it's mybeloved2015.wix.com/home. We will provide some faculty bios over the next several months in our weekly newsletter column. Stay tuned!
