Vacation Bible School Begins Monday

It's that special time again! Vacation Bible School will be held from 9:00 to 11:30 a.m., Monday through Wednesday, June 9-11. "Wilderness Escape" will give children from our church and community a sense of what it was like to flee into the wilderness with Moses and the Israelites.

VBS serves children from the age of four through rising sixth-graders. Registration forms are still available at the church. Please contact Lilly Osborne or Tina Witcher,
if you have any questions.
We Have a New Director of Children's Ministries!

We are excited to welcome Lilly Osborne as our new Director of Children's Ministries. She began her work in this capacity on June 1.

Of course, we know Lilly well through her leadership in our church, especially in her work with children. For a number of years she has directed our Vacation Bible School, a task she undertakes eagerly and joyfully. This new position will engage her many gifts for education and ministry throughout our children's program. Among these gifts are a musical background and experience working with our children's music ministry. Lilly believes that song and movement help children learn and remember.

Of her commitment, Lilly says, "I am honored and extremely excited to serve the children at this church who are so dear to my heart.  I look forward to partnering with families to ensure that every child will know the saving love of Jesus Christ."

Serving the Larger Church

Our ministry staff work all hours and most days but not always on site. What are they doing when they're away? Here follows a summary, by no means exhaustive, of their summer activities.

  • Dave Welch will be serving from June 7 through June 20 as the head counselor and pastor for the team planning Great Escape Lee, so called because it is held at Lee University.
  • Steve and Vicki Fey are on the planning committee for the 2014 Montreat Conferences on Worship and Music, so will be at Montreat for both weeks this summer. They are already gearing up for the 2015 conferences, which they will direct.
  • Katie Arnold is working with Dave on the planning team for Great Escape Lee. She will lead the counselor care team, whose members contact church leaders as they are preparing for the trip to equip them with information and support. When camp is in session, this team checks in on counselors to make sure things are going well and to meet any needs they may have. From June 24 through July 2, Katie will lead the FPC high school mission trip. Katie and the kids will serve with Presbyterian Social Missions in Jacksonville, Florida, for several days, then drive to Panama City Beach for BigStuf Camp.
Middle School Students Head for Great Escape

Our middle school youth will be at The Great Escape Lee June 9-14. The Great Escape is the oldest of the middle school conferences in the US, and our youth can confirm what its website says of the summer event: "Each week is packed full of recreation and activities as well as dynamic speakers, musicians, and other artists who understand how to communicate in real ways with young people. ... The Great Escape is a tremendously fun and exciting atmosphere where students feel comfortable and loved, and where they will have the best week of their lives experiencing the love of Jesus!"

Help Us Fill BFIA's Need for Personal Care Kits

bristol faith in action logo

This month FPC is responding to an urgent request from Bristol Faith in Action for personal care kits for their guests.  These items are not eligible for purchase by food stamps, and they are highly valued as a way of responding to the needs of our neighbors.

Here is how to make a kit. In a 1-gallon Zip-Loc or reusable cloth shopping bag, place a

regular (not travel) size container of each of the following items:

  • shampoo
  • soap
  • toothbrush
  • toothpaste
  • deodorant
  • comb or brush
  • razor(s)
  • small can of shaving foam
  • washcloth
  • emery boards  or nail clippers
  • lotion, if available

Most of these items are available at drugstores and dollar stores. Store brands and brands such as Suave are fine. Purchase the things that you would use yourself. It is not required, but it would be helpful, if you customize bags for men and women. For example, Secret deodorant and emery boards for women, and Right Guard and nail clippers for men.

While we prefer you not use travel size in the personal care kits, we still welcome those as separate donations because we give them out in bulk. They should be unopened and clean.

Empty bags with this list will be available for pickup in worship this Sunday. We ambitiously aim to provide 200 kits to Bristol Faith in Action this summer. Will you help us reach out to our neighbors in need in this way?

Men's Breakfast Next Saturday
The monthly Men's Breakfast has moved back to its old place on second Saturdays and will continue through the summer. The next gathering of the men of the church and their friends for breakfast, Bible study, and good fellowship will be at 8:00 a.m.,

June 14, in the Fellowship Hall. We look forward to sharing this time with you!

Thou Foster Child of Motor Noise and an Hour's Time

What better time for immediate gratification than the end of the school year and the beginning of summer? The most skeptical observer cannot deny that a mown lawn is a thing of beauty and a joy for about a week. This week Randy Cook delivers an ode on a quick return, and next week Dan Gross does the honors.

To earn an instant return on your investment of time and labor, call Randy at 423-956-1541 or email him at npolecook@aol.com. He will add you to our team of volunteer mowers or to our substitutes list, as you prefer.

Music Notes

Music participants for June: Sanctuary Choir. The Feys are on the planning committee for the 2014 Montreat Conferences on Worship & Music, so will be at Montreat for both weeks this year and next, when they will direct the conference. Pat Flannagan will direct the choir in their absence, and Alan Hunter will play the organ June 15 and 22.

Anthems for the next two Sundays: On June 8 the Sanctuary Choir will sing as an anthem the spiritual "Every Time I Feel the Spirit." Both the words and the music come out of the traditions of the slave song and speak with confidence of the power of the Spirit to work in our lives, recognizing the Spirit's work through Moses and the Old Testament prophets. It is most appropriate to sing this on Pentecost Sunday as we recognize the gift of the Spirit to the New Testament Apostles, reminding us that the Spirit has been at work since creation.

The anthem for June 15 has a possible connection with Bristol, and certainly with our region. "Christians, We Have Met to Worship" sets the first and final stanza of a text by George Atkins (1793-1827), a Methodist pastor born in England, but who served churches in our region. He died while serving a church in Abingdon and was buried there. One source claims that his remains were moved in 1895 to the Sulphur Springs Cemetery in Bristol, Tennessee. The text joyously calls us all to worship, and in worship we will be showered "with sweet manna all around."

David Ashley White

The words have been paired since 1825 with an American folk melody appropriately named "Holy Manna." This choral arrangement is by David Ashley White (b. 1944), who has had a long, successful career as a composer and a faculty member of the University of Houston's School of Music. White's setting illuminates the joyous nature of the text and tune.

Programs of note: The Paramount Center's Tunes at Noon will begin the summer series of Friday programs this week on June 6, with basso Tim Landis (and friends), accompanied by Vicki Fey. Then, on June 13, the Bristol Music Club's scholarship winners will perform, with a cake in the lobby afterwards to celebrate the Club's 100th anniversary.

Montreat participants: This year's church children and youth attending Montreat with the Feys for week 1 of the conference are the following: Josiah Chambers, Tobin Chambers, Zora Gross, Angelica Poteat, Rosa Poteat, and Wyatt Rush. They will be leaving after church Sunday, June 15, and will return Saturday morning, June 21. The Feys are on this year's conference planning committee and are gearing up for the one-year countdown to the 2015 conferences, which they are directing. Mark your calendars now for 2015. Week 1 will be June 21-26, and week 2 will be June 28-July 3.
