VBS Needs Help in the Wilderness

We urgently need volunteers to make Vacation Bible School happen at FPC this summer. The dates are June 9-11, from 9:00 to 11:30 a.m., and the theme is "Wilderness Escape." We will give children from our church and community a sense of what it was like to flee Egypt with Moses and the Israelites and escape into the wilderness. If you can volunteer, please call the church office or email Gordon Turnbull at gturnbull@fpcbristol.org.

We also are collecting supplies and props for the Israelites' camp. If you can lend or donate any of the items below, please contact Lilly Osborne or Tina Witcher. And please put your name on any item that you would like to retrieve after the Israelites have reached the Promised Land.

VBS supplies needed: easy-up canopies, woven rugs, wicker baskets, flat sheets in solid colors, artificial greenery/palm trees, and artificial fruit.

VBS serves children from the age of four through rising sixth-graders. Registration forms are available at the church.

Men's Breakfast Back on Second Saturdays
The monthly Men's Breakfast has moved back to its old place on second Saturdays and will continue through the summer. The next gathering of the men of the church and their friends for breakfast, Bible study, and good fellowship will be at 8:00 a.m.,

June 14, in the Fellowship Hall. We look forward to sharing this time with you!

Partly Sunny, Possible Storms, Scattered Brides

We tip our sunhat to Jim White, who mows the church grounds this week, and hope we won't need to break out the poncho for Randy Cook, who takes over next week. You can help make our lawns beautiful for our spring brides by joining our team of volunteer mowers. Just call Randy at 423-956-1541 or email him at npolecook@aol.com. He will be happy to show you how to use the Tiger Cat.

Music Notes
Harold Friedell

Sunday's music participants: Sanctuary Choir; Alan Hunter, organist; Pat Flannagan, director. The Feys are on vacation and will be back in the office Tuesday, June 3.

Sunday's music: The anthem text was written by Percy Dearmer as an addition to an existing hymn; it was later separated out, as it stands up well on its own. About these words, Paul Westermeyer writes, "[They are] a celebration of Christ's presence among those who are tethered by the Spirit at the Lord's table and who pray that as disciples they may make their meals and living 'as sacraments' by 'caring, helping, and giving.'" Dearmer (1867-1936) was an English clergyman with wide-ranging interests; he edited a number of notable hymnals. The musical setting was made by Harold Friedell (1905-1958), an American organist and teacher who served as musician at several notable churches in the New York City area. Friedell's melody and harmonies capture the expansive nature of the words.

Programs of note: The Paramount Center's Tunes at Noon will begin the summer series of Friday programs on June 6, with basso Tim Landis (and friends), accompanied by Vicki Fey. Then, on June 13, the Bristol Music Club's scholarship winners will perform, with a cake in the lobby afterwards to celebrate the Club's 100th anniversary!

Montreat participants: This year's church children and youth attending Montreat with the Feys during the first week of the conference are the following: Josiah Chambers, Tobin Chambers, Zora Gross, Angelica Poteat, Rosa Poteat, and Wyatt Rush. Also joining our house of folks will be conferees/chaperones Andy and Glory Cumbow. Sujean Bradley has a long history of attending the Worship and Music Conference and will attend with family members from southwest Virginia. The Feys are on this year's conference planning committee and are gearing up for the one-year countdown to the 2015 conferences, which they are directing! Mark your calendars now for 2015. Week 1 is scheduled for June 21-26; week 2 for June 28-July 3.
