You Can Help the Israelites in the Wilderness

"Wilderness Escape" is the theme of this summer's Vacation Bible School, scheduled for June 9-11, from 9:00 to 11:30 a.m. Children from the age of four through rising sixth-graders are invited to flee Egypt with Moses and the Israelites and travel into the unknown wilderness. Adults of all ages are invited to play a role in this adventure; call the church office or email Gordon Turnbull at gturnbull@fpcbristol.org to volunteer. Registration forms are available at the church.

We are collecting supplies and props for the Israelites' camp. If you can lend or donate any of the following items, please contact Lilly Osborne or Tina Witcher. And please put your name on any item that you would like to retrieve after the Israelites have reached the Promised Land.

VBS supplies needed:

  • easy-up canopies
  • woven rugs
  • wicker baskets
  • flat sheets (solid colors)
  • artificial greenery/palm trees
  • artificial fruit

Thank you for your help in producing a Vacation Bible School that our children will long remember!

Our Year-to-Date Financial Summary
We here present the highlights of our year-to-date financial summary as of April 30, followed by a tabular summary, both prepared by Aaron Brooks, Finance Chair, and Betsy Galliher, Church Business Administrator. Upon request, members of the church can receive a comprehensive financial report.

Looking for More Drivers for Meals on Wheels

Meals on Wheels would benefit from a few more volunteers from among our congregation to serve as permanent or substitute drivers. FPC participates in this community outreach program on the second Thursday of each month.

MOW delivers to about 50 recipients in all. Each driver picks up meals in the Fellowship Hall around 10:00 a.m. and delivers them to an average of six homes. Drivers greet the recipients but do not need to stay and visit.

Volunteers have the pleasure of knowing that they have not only provided food where it is needed but also given the recipients the security of knowing someone will be stopping by that day.

If you are interested in helping, please contact the church or Kay Wiseman (276-466-8710) as soon as possible. Thank you!

Recycle at Haven of Rest and Change a Life

The Haven of Rest Ministries of Bristol has added a recycling service to help finance their work in our community. They are asking us to take our recyclables to one of their two locations, where they will turn trash into treasure in Jesus' name.

Metal items can be taken to the recycling site across the parking lot from the Thrift Store. All other items should be taken to the back entrance of the old Mitchell Powers building at 1215 Fifth Street. The recycling service does not accept glass containers or TVs. They will pick up large loads. To schedule a pickup, call 423-968-2157 or 423-341-5773.

They will accept a wide variety of items for recycling:

Clothing, purses, shoes, belts

Junk mail, newspapers, sorted office materials (paper)

Cardboard boxes, shoeboxes

#1 drink containers, water bottles

#2 plastic milk jugs, detergent bottles

Cell phones, laptops

Computer towers

Printers, empty ink cartridges

VCR

Copper (pipe, insulated wire)

Electric motors

Water heaters

The Haven of Rest Ministries operates the Rescue Mission, which cares for transient men and women; the Light House and the Grace Home, which provide a 36-week Discipleship Program to help men and women with life-controlling problems; Dolly's House, which shelters and cares for women with children; and a food pantry.

Always Room for Mower
Alternately dodging lightning bolts and defying the sun, our intrepid mowers for this week and next, David Moore and Roger Sikorski, usher in the wedding season. Don't wait for an invitation to join them, just call our mowing team coordinator, Randy Cook, at 423-956-1541, or email him at npolecook@aol.com. Randy will give lessons in operating the Tiger Cat to those who ask.

Music Notes
The choir dinner brought out big smiles for a rewarding year.

Sunday's music participants: Sanctuary Choir.

Sunday's music: "The Call," a short poem by George Herbert (1593-1633), is the text for this Sunday's Sanctuary Choir anthem. One author writes: "[T]his short poem is simple and direct. It is almost completely composed of words of one syllable. Allusions to the Old and New testaments, as well as to the Church of England liturgy, abound.... There are references to Revelations 22:26 in 'Come, Lord Jesus' and to John 14:6, where Jesus is described as 'the way, the truth and the life.' 'Come' is the call of the poet to God, but it is also the response of the poet to a call from God." The poem has been set by several composers; this setting is by Alexander Brent Smith (1889-1950), an English organist, composer, and educator, whose music reflects the simple elegance of the text.

Choir Awards: The annual children's and youth choir awards dinner was held Wednesday, May 7. The following children received perfect attendance awards: Eden Chambers, Marceau Chambers, Josiah Chambers, Tobin Chambers, Foster Covington, Rachel Covington, Sarah Galliher, Isabel Gross, Zora Gross, Claire Hankins, Riley Miller, Wyatt Rush, Ashley Sanchez, Elena Sanchez, and Ruby Warhurst.
