Please see the schedule of special Holy Week services, at the head of this newsletter, for many other opportunities to gather and worship together in the coming week.

Spring Cleaning Day Set for April 26

Our annual Spring Cleaning Day is set fittingly for the first Saturday after Easter, day of renewal. On April 26, from 8:00 a.m. till noon, the Deacons' Household Task Team will send small teams from the church to FPC members' homes to help with the chores of the season: clearing out clutter, changing light bulbs and smoke detector batteries, doing yard work, and making minor repairs.

Look for sign-up forms during worship soon. If you are interested in some help on Spring Cleaning Day, please return a form to the office or call the church at (423) 764-7176.

Anyone who wants to join in a morning of service and fellowship can volunteer. Call the church office or email Gordon Turnbull at gturnbull@fpcbristol.org. Put "Spring Cleaning" in the subject heading, and we will put you on a team!

Seeking Our Next Director of Children's Ministries

Children filled the chapel during our 2013 VBS program.

Our Session has begun the search for our next Director of Children's Ministries. This position is for twenty hours per week. The DCM coordinates various children's ministries, including nursery, Sunday School, and Vacation Bible School, for children from birth through grade 5. Education training or Christian education training and experience are desired.

Applicants should send a cover letter and a resume by April 21 to Personnel Committee, First Presbyterian Church, 701 Florida Avenue, Bristol, TN 37620, or to bgalliher@fpcbristol.org. Thank you for praying for God's calling for this important position on our ministry staff.

Men's Breakfast This Saturday at Perkins

The men of the church and their friends are invited to the monthly Men's Breakfast, to be held at 8:00 a.m., this Saturday, April 12. Join us for breakfast, Bible study, and good fellowship at Perkins Restaurant, 102 Bristol East Road, Bristol, Virginia.

Eastward, Mow!

Last weekend the Bradford pears bloomed on the Virginia side of Bristol, and on Monday the grass sprang up. By Tuesday mowers had blossomed out all over town.

Here on our campus this week, Tom King will convert the pagan dandelions into greenery on the way to Palm Sunday. JB Madison, April 16-19, will put out the little suns of the lawn while we await the true sun of Easter morning.

Anyone who wishes to help care for the church grounds may call Randy Cook at 423-956-1541 or email him at npolecook@aol.com. Randy will give lessons in operating the mower to those who ask.

Third Monday Is FPC's Day at Food Pantry

We are looking for volunteers from our congregation to carry out our church's commitment to help at the Bristol Emergency Food Pantry on the third Monday of each month. The Food Panty needs people to fill boxes and bags with food from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. on that day. The Pantry also needs volunteers from 1:00 to 3:00 to interview applicants for vouchers.

To volunteer or to get more information, contact Jim White at 423-571-4449. Bristol Emergency Food Pantry is located at 21 Washington Street, Bristol, Virginia, in front of First Baptist Church.

Vanilla Wafers for Neighborhood Children

vanilla wafers

We are collecting boxes of vanilla wafers this month for our Fairmount students' snack program. Simply by bringing in a box or two of vanilla wafers to the little red schoolhouse in the Fellowship Hallway, you can perk up neighborhood schoolchildren who cannot afford to bring their own for snacktime. Thank you for your kindness!

FPC Students to Aid Half & Half Marathon

FPC Student Ministries will serve the American Heart Association by providing a water station on the corner of Georgia and Poplar avenues for the Bristol Half & Half marathon this Saturday, April 12. As runners reach the seven-mile mark, FPC students will hand out cups of water and cheer them on as they continue the marathon.

Students will meet at the water station at 8:00 a.m. Breakfast will be provided. When all the runners have passed the water station, students will assist in cleaning up, then walk back to the church. Then it's off to lunch at Casa de Mexicana!

Music Notes

Sunday's music participants: Sanctuary Choir, Cherub Choir, Savior's Singers Children's Choir, Youth Bells.

Sunday's music: The first of the two Sanctuary Choir anthems, "Prepare the Royal Highway," uses as its text a 1978 translation of an early nineteenth-century hymn text written by Swedish Lutheran pastor and poet Frans Mikael Franzén (1772-1847). (An earlier translation of the same text appears in our hymnal as "Prepare the Way, O Zion.") Drawing inspiration from Isaiah 40 and Psalm 24, the song joyously anticipates the coming Messiah. The musical setting is by Allen Pote (b. 1945), a native of Kansas who served for many years as a church musician and now is a full-time composer and the artistic director of the Pensacola Children's Chorus. Pote's setting fully reflects the joy and excitement of the words.

The second anthem, "Comes Riding Jesus," has words and music by David Bridges (b. 1946). A teacher at Belmont University, Bridges has served congregations in Nashville and taught at MTSU. He has an extensive library of published compositions for a number of different musical formats. He has most recently served as Director of Music at Second Presbyterian of Nashville, a position he is retiring from after Easter. This anthem, both musically and textually, captures the paradox of Palm Sunday, and of both joy and tension, as Jesus was well aware of the way the celebration would soon turn to tragedy.

Jody Lindh (in front) plays a duet at his retirement celebration last May.

The anthem sung by both children's choirs, "Hosanna to the Son," is based on the Palm Sunday narrative as found in the Gospel of John. Accompanied by bells and piano, the text and music are by Jody Lindh. Lindh, a native of Kansas, recently retired after serving as music director of University Park United Methodist Church of Dallas, Texas, for 45 years. The music captures the excitement of the story of Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem.
