Wednesday Night Program for April 2

Please join us April 2 at 5:30 p.m. for fellowship over a down-home meal of soup, beans, and cornbread. Stay to hear Fred Foy Strang lead our adult learning program at 6:15. Both events will be held in the Fellowship Hall. Student Fellowship small groups and Wednesday Night Kids will meet as usual at 6:00. We look forward to sharing this time with you!

Lilies for Easter

Spring is here on its own terms, and while we come to terms with that, let's plan to place bright lilies in our worship spaces on Easter. To order lilies in honor or memory of those you love and esteem, fill out a form and return it to the church office with payment by Monday, April 7. Order forms can be found in the Sunday bulletin, on the kiosk, and in the office; lilies are $15 per plant. To aid correct acknowledgment, please print names and instructions. Lilies will be placed in the sanctuary and Fellowship Hall for the April 20 worship services.

Lute and Flute Sing Together in Season Finale

A most delightful afternoon of music is in store for listeners of all ages as flutist Mindy Rosenfeld and lutenist Ronn McFarlane perform in our final Arts Series event of the season at 3:00 p.m., Sunday, April 6, in our sanctuary. They will play duets in a wide variety of Renaissance, Baroque, Celtic, and original music.

Two of the founding members of the famed Baltimore Consort, Mindy and Ronn also have successful careers performing duo programs around the country, and both have recorded extensively. Mindy will, no doubt, play several types of flutes (perhaps even a pennywhistle), and Ronn will demonstrate his facility on the lute, which is any plucked string instrument with a neck (whether fretted or unfretted) and a deep, round back.

Ronn strives to bring the lute, the most popular instrument of the Renaissance , into today's musical mainstream and make it accessible to a wider audience. Born in West Virginia, he spent his early years in Maryland. At thirteen, upon hearing "Wipeout" by the Surfaris, he fell wildly in love with music and taught himself to play on a "cranky sixteen-dollar steel-string guitar." In 1996, he was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Music from Shenandoah Conservatory for his achievements in bringing the lute and its music to the world. Recently, Ronn has been composing new music for the lute, building on the tradition of the lutenist composers of past centuries. His original compositions are the focus of his solo CD, Indigo Road, which received a GRAMMY Award Nomination for Best Classical Crossover Album in 2009. His newest CD release, One Morning, features Ayreheart, a new ensemble brought together to perform Ronn's new music.

Fluent in the music of several eras, Mindy is also a founding member of San Francisco's Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra (which the New York Times described as "the nation's premier early music ensemble"), where she has performed under director Nicholas McGegan and others. She has played in Lincoln Center's Mostly Mozart Festival, the Berkeley Early Music Festival, BBC Proms (Royal Albert Hall), Concertgebouw (Amsterdam), and both Carnegie and Disney Halls. She has performed with many ensembles, including the American Bach Soloists.

Suggested ticket donation for this concert is $15 for adults and $5 for students ages 6 through college. That's a little more than for previous programs, but the performance will be much greater than the price!

Message from Brazil

The elders of the Independent Presbyterian Church of Felipe Camarão have sent us this message regarding the recovery from pneumonia of our dear friend and brother Pastor Rubens:

"On Sunday we visited Pastor Rubens in the hospital and found him to be doing a little better. He is receiving a treatment that will last 10 days, at which time they will evaluate whether further treatment is needed for the fluid build-up around his lungs. Pastor Rubens looks good, although at times he must use oxygen. We ask that our beloved friends and church in Bristol continue to pray for Pastor Rubens.

"A big hug and prayers that the Lord God blesses the church in Bristol!"

Felipe Camarão School Administrator Graduates
Adailza de Medeiros Costa da Silva

Part of our church's mission in Brazil includes enabling the staff at the school in Felipe Camarão to become better equipped for the work they have been called to do. Our church and, specifically, the Heart to Heart Women's Ministry have reason to celebrate Adailza de Medeiros Costa da Silva's successful completion of her academic studies. While serving as the school administrator, Adailza has taken night and weekend classes for the past four years to achieve this lifelong goal. This would not have been possible without our church's financial and prayer support.

Adailza will receive her degree in administration on Sunday, March 28! If you would like to congratulate her, please send her a note by email.   Her address is adailza_mcs@hotmail.com. And don't worry about a language barrier; just write in English, and she will be able to translate it!

We Host Family Promise of Bristol Next Week

We will host families on our campus next week as part of our Family Promise of Bristol commitment. Thank you to all the FPC volunteers who help to make this ministry possible!

Men's Breakfast Moved to April 12

The Men's Breakfast usually held on the first Saturday of the month will be held on the second Saturday in April. The men of the church and their friends will meet for breakfast, Bible study, and good fellowship at 8:00 a.m., April 12, in the Fellowship Hall.

To Mow or Not to Mow

Mowing is an existential dilemma at this time of year. Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer the grass to grow, or to take arms against unseasonable snow, and by mowing, end it, that is the question facing Aaron Brooks, March 26-29, and Dan Gross, April 2-5.

To sign up for a spot on the Danish mowing team, call Randy Cook at 423-956-1541 or email him at npolecook@aol.com. Though this be madness, yet there is method in it. Randy will privily give lessons in operating the Scag mower to those who ask.

Food Pantry Needs Volunteers

Bristol Emergency Food Pantry is looking for volunteers for two very different tasks. If you are available on the third Monday of the month, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m., the Food Pantry can use your help filling boxes and bags with food. If you hunger to use your interviewing skills, the Food Pantry can put you to work from 1:00 to 3:00 one afternoon a month interviewing people seeking Food Pantry vouchers.

Contact Jim White at 423-571-4449, if you are interested in volunteering. Bristol Emergency Food Pantry is located at 21 Washington Street, Bristol, Virginia, in front of First Baptist Church.

Attention Deficit Reorder

Attention wanders when we're tired or hungry. Let's help neighborhood children attend to their afternoon lessons by giving them a snack. We are collecting plain and multigrain Cheerios for Fairmount Elementary students who cannot afford to bring snacks from home. You can help by bringing in a box or two of Cheerios to the little red schoolhouse in the Fellowship Hallway. Thank you!

One More Chance to Clean Up for the Scouts

You have one more chance to get your clutter out of your house and over to FPC for the upcoming yard sale to benefit our Scouts! You can bring it to the Scout Hall on the evening of Tuesday, April 1. You can bring big items, like windows and doors (it's been done before), on the morning of the sale. Boy Scout Troop 3 and Venture Crew 3 will hold the yard sale in the parking lot outside the Scout Hall on Saturday, April 5, from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. All proceeds will go directly to fund activities such as this summer's Scout Camp, the West Point Camporee in May, and the Philmont Cavalcade in Cimarron, New Mexico, in June.

The Scouts can provide signed receipts for donated goods. As a rule, they do not price items but ask for a donation. If you have a minimum in mind, be sure to tell them. All unsold items will be taken directly to the Haven of Rest or Salvation Army immediately after the sale.

You can support this project by coming to the yard sale or donating items, or both! If you need to make special arrangements to drop things off, or if you have any questions, just let Karen Haaser know. You can reach her on Facebook, by email (karenhaaser@gmail.com) or by cell phone, (423) 383-1287.

Students to Aid Half & Half Marathon Again

FPC Student Ministries will serve the American Heart Association by providing a water station for the Bristol Half & Half marathon on Saturday, April 12. As runners reach the seven-mile mark, FPC students will hand out cups of water and cheer them on as they continue the marathon.

Students will meet at the water station site on the corner of Georgia and Poplar avenues at 8:00 a.m. Breakfast will be provided. When all the runners have passed the water station, students will assist in cleaning up, then walk back to the church. Then it's off to lunch at Casa de Mexicana!

Students Spring Back after Break

Student Fellowship is back! Matt Richardson will be with us this Sunday evening at 6:00. We congregate in the Youth Wing and the Fellowship Hall.

From Steve & Vicki Fey

Music Notes

Sunday's music participants: Sanctuary Choir; Gene Jones, clarinet; Savior's Singers Children's Choir (both services).

John Rutter at work.

Sunday's music: John Rutter (b. 1945) is among the most widely performed living composers of sacred choral music. One of his most beloved compositions is his setting of the 23rd Psalm, the Sanctuary Choir anthem this week. The text is the ancient Coverdale translation, which is commonly used in the English prayer book; Rutter composed it in 1976 and published it as a single work. In 1985 he included it as part of his larger Requiem. Rutter offers the work with a variety of accompaniment arrangements; we will be using organ with clarinet playing the solo instrumental line.

Rutter is known particularly for his gift of lyrical melody writing, which is evident in his setting of this beloved text. Often in musical compositions, shepherds are represented with solo woodwind instruments, and this composition follows that practice. This anthem has become a standard in the literature and is probably the most commonly performed choral setting of this text.

The Savior's Singers anthem is a combination of two spirituals, "I'm Gonna Sing When the Spirit Says 'Sing,'" and "Over My Head, There Is Music in the Air." The arrangement is by Terry D. Taylor (b. 1955), who has had an extensive career in church music and currently is the managing editor of a children's music curriculum for the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship. These two songs invite us to respond to the Spirit with joy, and particularly with music and singing.

Lenten organ meditations: The remaining Lenten noon organ meditations at Central Presbyterian Church in Bristol, Virginia, will be offered by the following: Joan Keith, member of Central, sister-in-law of Linda Poteat, and substitute organist, on April 2; Bob Greene, organist at State Street UMC, on April 9.
