Wednesday Night Program for March 26

On March 26, Gordon Turnbull will lead our adult learning program at 6:15 in the Fellowship Hall, after the fellowship dinner, which will be held at 5:30. Student Fellowship small groups and Wednesday Night Kids will meet as usual at 6:00 p.m. Please join us!

Lilies from Ashes

Now we take our last steps through winter and cross the border into spring, making our annual pilgrimage through Lent, knowing that we will come at last to Easter with blooms in our hearts and hands. With lilies we will again adorn our worship space and rejoice in our renewal.

Those of us who wish to have lilies placed in honor or memory of loved ones can order them from this Sunday, March 23, to Monday, April 7. Forms can be found in the Sunday bulletin and in the church office; each plant will cost $15. Forms should be returned with payment by Monday, April 7, and with names and instructions printed clearly.

Founders of Baltimore Consort to Perform in Arts Series Season Finale April 6

A most delightful afternoon of music is in store for listeners of all ages as flutist Mindy Rosenfeld and lutenist Ronn McFarlane perform in our final Arts Series event of the season at 3:00 p.m., Sunday, April 6, in our sanctuary. They will play duets in a wide variety of Renaissance, Baroque, Celtic, and original music.

Two of the founding members of the famed Baltimore Consort, Mindy and Ronn also have successful careers performing duo programs around the country, and both have recorded extensively. Mindy will, no doubt, play several types of flutes (perhaps even a pennywhistle), and Ronn will demonstrate his facility on the lute, which is any plucked string instrument with a neck (whether fretted or unfretted) and a deep, round back.

Ronn strives to bring the lute, the most popular instrument of the Renaissance , into today's musical mainstream and make it accessible to a wider audience. Born in West Virginia, he spent his early years in Maryland. At thirteen, upon hearing "Wipeout" by the Surfaris, he fell wildly in love with music and taught himself to play on a "cranky sixteen-dollar steel-string guitar." In 1996, he was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Music from Shenandoah Conservatory for his achievements in bringing the lute and its music to the world. Recently, Ronn has been composing new music for the lute, building on the tradition of the lutenist composers of past centuries. His original compositions are the focus of his solo CD, Indigo Road, which received a GRAMMY Award Nomination for Best Classical Crossover Album in 2009. His newest CD release, One Morning, features Ayreheart, a new ensemble brought together to perform Ronn's new music.

Fluent in the music of several eras, Mindy is also a founding member of San Francisco's Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra (which the New York Times described as "the nation's premier early music ensemble"), where she has performed under director Nicholas McGegan and others. She has played in Lincoln Center's Mostly Mozart Festival, the Berkeley Early Music Festival, BBC Proms (Royal Albert Hall), Concertgebouw (Amsterdam), and both Carnegie and Disney Halls. She has performed with many ensembles, including the American Bach Soloists.

Suggested ticket donation for this concert is $15 for adults and $5 for students ages 6 through college. That's a little more than for previous programs, but the performance will be much more than worth the price!

Caring for One Another

We continue to look for volunteers to serve in our congregational Care Shepherds ministry. If you can provide a meal to someone just home from the hospital, send a card to or call someone in a special care facility, or comfort someone in distress, FPC wants you!

The goal of the Care Shepherd ministry is to show Christian love and care to members of our church family who are in need. There are as many ways to serve as there are opportunities. Volunteers serve one month at a time on a team that coordinates the needs of the congregation for that month.

For more information or to volunteer, please contact Lorri Looney at jeffandlorri@msn.com or 423-573-1676 or Sue Faucette at suerforeo@hotmail.com or 423-652-1947. You can also find sign-up forms at the church and in your Sunday bulletin.

Mow Is Less

We try to keep up with theoretical physics, but we may never understand spring theory. We get that it's up and down, warm days followed by snow, but that's as far as we get. We only hope that Randy Cook, who is on lawn duty this week, Aaron Brooks, who takes over March 26-29, and Dan Gross, who carries on the good work April 2-5, can spring onto the Tiger Cat at their appointed times and show us that mow is less.

To sign up for a spot on the mowing team, callRandy at 423-956-1541 or email him at npolecook@aol.com. He will give private lessons in operating the Scag mower to anyone who needs them.

Volunteer at the Food Pantry

Bristol Emergency Food Pantry is looking for volunteers for two very different tasks. If you are available on the third Monday of the month, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m., the Food Pantry can use your help filling boxes and bags with food. If you hunger to use your interviewing skills, the Food Pantry can put you to work from 1:00 to 3:00 one afternoon a month interviewing people seeking Food Pantry vouchers.

Contact Jim White at 423-571-4449, if you are interested in volunteering. Bristol Emergency Food Pantry is located at 21 Washington Street, Bristol, Virginia, in front of First Baptist Church.

Attention: It's Time for a Snack!

We can all use a boost during the afternoon slump. Let's help neighborhood children attend to their afternoon lessons by giving them a snack. We are collecting plain and multigrain Cheerios for Fairmount Elementary students who cannot afford to bring snacks from home. You can help by bringing in a box or two of Cheerios to the little red schoolhouse in the Fellowship Hallway. Thank you!

Clear Out the Clutter to Aid FPC Scouts

If you, your family, or your friends have items that can be donated to support Scouting at FPC, please bring them to the church's Scout Hall on the evening of Tuesday, March 25, or Tuesday, April 1. Boy Scout Troop 3 and Venture Crew 3 will hold a yard sale in the parking lot outside the Scout Hall on Saturday, April 5, from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. All proceeds will go directly to fund activities such as this summer's Scout Camp, the West Point Camporee in May, and the Philmont Cavalcade in Cimarron, New Mexico, in June.

Members of FPC can support this project by coming to the yard sale or donating items, or both! Don't hesitate to use your imagination about what to sell; the Scouts have accepted and sold windows and doors before. (It's best to bring that kind of thing to the church on the morning of the sale.) If you need to make special arrangements to drop things off, or if you have any questions, just let Karen Haaser know. You can reach her on Facebook, by email (karenhaaser@gmail.com) or by cell phone, (423) 383-1287.

The Scouts can provide signed receipts for donated goods. As a rule, they do not price items but ask for a donation. If you have a minimum in mind, be sure to tell them. All unsold items will be taken directly to the Haven of Rest or Salvation Army immediately after the sale.

Music Notes

Sunday's music participants: Sanctuary Choir.

Ronald Turner

Sunday's music: "Come, Ye Sinners, Poor and Needy," the Sanctuary Choir anthem for Sunday, uses the first two stanzas and the refrain of the familiar hymn. The stanzas, an evangelical call to follow Jesus, were written by Joseph Hart (1712-1768), who was the minister of an independent Calvinist congregation in London. The refrain was added anonymously in 1874 and is the sinner's positive response to the call of the stanzas. The tune, which repeats identically between the stanzas and refrain, is an American folk hymn from 1835 and has been paired with this text in most hymnals. The setting is by Ronald Turner (b. 1946), who has had an extensive career as a church musician, soloist, and conductor and has served for 37 years as a professor at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. Of particular note in this arrangement is the expressive accompaniment.

Lenten organ meditations: The remaining Lenten noon organ meditations at Central Presbyterian Church in Bristol, Virginia, will be offered by Marcia Cooper, music director at Redeemer Lutheran Church, on March 26; by Joan Keith, member at Central, sister-in-law of Linda Poteat, and substitute organist, on April 2; and by Bob Greene, organist at State Street UMC, on April 9.
