No Wednesday Night Program March 19

Our regular evening program and fellowship dinner have been suspended for next Wednesday, March 19, because of our local schools' spring break. After the break, on March 26, Gordon Turnbull will complete his two-part series at 6:15 in the Fellowship Hall.

Student Fellowship small groups and Wednesday Night Kids will not meet March 19 but will meet at 6:00 p.m. on March 26.

Temporary Schedule Change for Tuesday Night Bible Study

The second meeting of Betsy Turnbull's bimonthly Heart to Heart Bible study in March and April will be on the fourth Tuesday of the month, March 25 and April 22. The group will continue to meet at 7:00 p.m., and it will return to the regular schedule of first and third Tuesdays in May.

The next three meetings, therefore, will be held on the following Tuesdays:

                                                                                    March 25

                                                                                    April 8

                                                                                    April 22

Yard Sale to Support Scouting at FPC

If you, your family, or your friends have items that can be donated to support Scouting at FPC, please bring them to the church's Scout Hall on the evening of Tuesday, March 25, or Tuesday, April 1. Boy Scout Troop 3 and Venture Crew 3 will hold a yard sale in the parking lot outside the Scout Hall on Saturday, April 5, from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. All proceeds will go directly to fund activities such as this summer's Scout Camp, the West Point Camporee in May, and the Philmont Cavalcade in Cimarron, New Mexico, in June.

Members of FPC can support this project by coming to the yard sale or donating items, or both! Don't hesitate to use your imagination about what to sell; the Scouts have accepted and sold windows and doors before. (It's best to bring that kind of thing to the church on the morning of the sale.) If you need to make special arrangements to drop things off, or if you have any questions, just let Karen Haaser know. You can reach her on Facebook, by email (karenhaaser@gmail.com) or by cell phone, (423) 383-1287.

The Scouts can provide signed receipts for donated goods. As a rule, they do not price items but ask for a donation. If you have a minimum in mind, be sure to tell them. All unsold items will be taken directly to the Haven of Rest or Salvation Army immediately after the sale.

Caring for One Another

We continue to look for volunteers to serve in our congregational Care Shepherds ministry. If you can provide a meal to someone just home from the hospital, send a card to or call someone in a special care facility, or comfort someone in distress, FPC wants you!

The goal of the Care Shepherd ministry is to show Christian love and care to members of our church family who are in need. There are as many ways to serve as there are opportunities. Volunteers serve one month at a time on a team that coordinates the needs of the congregation for that month.

For more information or to volunteer, please contact Lorri Looney at jeffandlorri@msn.com or 423-573-1676 or Sue Faucette at suerforeo@hotmail.com or 423-652-1947. You can also find sign-up forms at the church and in your Sunday bulletin.

Mowers, Awake!

Those harbingers of spring, the first mowers of the season, will roar their merry notes as the new season arrives, at least by the calendar. Unless the church campus is coated in late snow, Randy Cook will wake the Tiger Cat and give it its first run since fall during the period March 19-22. Randy will hand the Cat's leash to Aaron Brooks for the period March 26-29. Thank you to all our mowers for making engine noise a welcome sound.

Give Fairmount Children a Boost

Help our neighborhood schoolchildren boost their get-up-and-go during the afternoon slump with a snack of Cheerios. We are collecting plain and multigrain Cheerios for Fairmount Elementary students who cannot afford to bring snacks from home. You can help by bringing in a box or two of Cheerios to the little red schoolhouse in the Fellowship Hallway. We appreciate it, and so do our hungry young friends!

Music Notes

Sunday's music participants: Sanctuary Choir.

Sunday's music: The Sanctuary Choir anthem this week is the much loved "God So Loved the World" by John Stainer. Stainer (1840-1901) was best known in his own time as a teacher and composer and for his tenure as organist and choir master at St. Paul's Cathedral in London. Today, he is remembered for his Passion cantata, The Crucifixion, from which this anthem is drawn. About this anthem, one author writes, "the inspired setting ... breathes the message of divine forgiveness and mercy." First performed in 1887, this anthem has truly withstood the test of time, for it continues to speak a message of God's love and forgiveness to choirs and congregations today.

Rehearsal reminder: As next week is spring break for the Bristol, Tennessee, City Schools, the Children's Bells, Savior's Singers Children's Choir, and Youth Bells will not rehearse Wednesday, March 19. Sanctuary Choir will rehearse at the regular time. Jubilate Youth Choir will not rehearse Sunday, March 16.

Joy Smith-Briggs

Lenten organ meditations: Once again, Central Presbyterian Church in Bristol, Virginia, is offering a series of half-hour organ meditations at noon on Wednesdays during Lent. The second of these will feature Joy Smith-Briggs, Central's organist, on March 19. Admission is free, but donations are accepted. The remainder of this series is as follows: on March 26, Marcia Cooper, music director at Redeemer Lutheran Church; on April 2, Joan Keith, member of Central, sister-in-law of Linda Poteat, and substitute organist; and on April 9, Bob Greene, organist at State Street UMC.

Arts Series: You won't want to miss the final Arts Series program of this season! Mark your calendars for Sunday, April 6, at 3:00 p. m., when you will hear two members of the famed Baltimore Consort, who appeared on our series in 2004. Flutist Mindy Rosenfeld and lutenist Ronn McFarlane will delight us with music for this instrumental combo. Suggested ticket donation for this concert is $15 for adults and $5 for students ages 6 through college. That's a little more than for previous programs but still more than worth the price.
