Welcome, New Members!

We rejoice in the gift of the three families who have joined our congregation since mid-December. Please help us welcome the following new members and their children:

Davan and Kristi Johnson were received into membership by the Session December 15. They are former members of NorthStar Baptist Church in Bristol, Virginia. Davan is an agent for Shelter Insurance, and Kristi is a customer service representative for US Solutions. Among other pursuits, they share an interest in working with and teaching children.

Lee and Robin North joined us March 2, transferring from Cokesbury United Methodist Church in Knoxville, where he served as an usher and she taught Sunday School. Lee is operations director for Electro-Mechanical, and Robin is a homemaker. He cycles and plays golf, and she says that lately she is into empty-nesting. They both enjoy a good laugh and a long walk. Their two sons are away at school. Evan is a sophomore at UTC, and Alec is a freshman at Carson-Newman.

Han and Laura Ong also joined our congregation March 2, transferring from Fellowship Bible Church in Batesville, Arkansas. Han is Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences at King University, where Laura is an assistant professor. Han served on their former church's missions committee, and Laura volunteered in the nursery. They are experienced small-group leaders, and they enjoy singing; both sang in their former church's choir, and Han sang in its praise band as well. They have three young sons, Noah, Moses, and Joseph.

Early to Bed and Early to Rise

Following the maxim may not make you healthy, wealthy, or wise, but it could give you the extra oomph you'll need to "spring forward" this Sunday, March 9. Daylight Saving Time will tiptoe in, carrying its shoes, at 2:00 a.m. Remember to set your clocks ahead one hour before you go to bed Saturday night. You don't want to get off to a late start on the first Sunday in Lent!

Wednesday Night Programs through March

Our Wednesday night programs continue March 12 with the first of a two-part series by Gordon Turnbull at 6:15 in the Fellowship Hall. Come early and enjoy intergenerational fellowship over a shared meal at 5:30. The menu for March 12 is breakfast for dinner.

Our regular programs and fellowship dinner will be suspended on the following Wednesday, March 19, during our local schools' spring break. After the break, on March 26, Gordon will complete his series.

Student Fellowship small groups and Wednesday Night Kids will not meet March 19 but will meet at 6:00 p.m. on March 12 and 26.

Presbyterian Women Meet Tuesday

Presbyterian Women will meet Tuesday morning, March 11, beginning with circle at 11:00. Bible study will follow at 11:30 and lunch at noon. We will bring boxes of plain or multigrain Cheerios to pass on to the children of Fairmount Elementary School. Please call the church office to reserve your place for lunch. We look forward to sharing this time with you!

Sunday Night Youth Fellowship Asks Why

On March 9, the Sunday Night Student Fellowship will discuss our need for Jesus and why he had to die on the cross. Join us at 6:00 at the church for lively conversation and fellowship.

Looking for Shepherds to Care for the Flock

If you can provide a meal to someone just home from the hospital, send a card to or call someone in a special care facility, or comfort someone in distress, FPC wants you for our Care Shepherds ministry.

The goal of the Care Shepherd ministry is to show Christian love and care to members of our church family who are in need. There are as many ways to serve as there are opportunities. Volunteers serve one month at a time on a team that coordinates the needs of the congregation for that month.

For more information or to volunteer, please contact Lorri Looney at jeffandlorri@msn.com or 423-573-1676 or Sue Faucette at suerforeo@hotmail.com or 423-652-1947.

Fairmount Children Go with the Goodness of Cheerios

Help our neighborhood schoolchildren boost their get-up-and-go during the afternoon slump with a snack of Cheerios. We are collecting plain and multigrain Cheerios for Fairmount Elementary students who cannot afford to bring snacks from home. You can help by bringing in a box or two of Cheerios to the little red schoolhouse in the Fellowship Hallway. We appreciate it, and so do our hungry young friends!

First It Sleeps, Then It Creeps, Then It Leaps

It's nearly time to thaw the church mower. With luck, the Tiger Cat will be warming itself in the sun in a week or so and we will have a new crop of volunteers to help the seasoned wranglers keep our campus beautiful. We mow in teams, choosing our times during the period from Wednesdays through Saturdays.

We are also looking for folks who can work earlier in the week, picking up tree branches and stacking them on the curb on the Spruce Street side of the front yard. This might be a good activity for families with young children.

If you can help with any of this, please call Randy Cook at 423-956-1541 or email him at npolecook@aol.com. If you'd like a private lesson on how to operate our Scag mower, Randy's your man. Just call or email him, or waylay him at church.

Music Notes

Sunday's music participants: Sanctuary Choir.

K. Lee Scott

Sunday's music: The Sanctuary Choir anthem, "The Tree of Life," has a fascinating history. The text began as a fifteen-stanza Hungarian poem from the seventeenth century. After it was translated into English, Erik Routley poetically paraphrased six of its stanzas. Routley (1917-1982) was the premier English language authority on hymnody in the twentieth century and wrote numerous original texts and tunes. Composer K. Lee Scott (b. 1950) encountered the text and created the hymn-anthem that the choir sings today. Scott says it is his favorite of his more than 300 published works. The text is rich in the imagery of a tree and all the ways it can represent Jesus. The elegance of the melody matches the elegance of the text.

For the season of Lent, we will be changing several of the sung responses that are part of the 11:00 service music. As part of the confession, we will sing a "Lord, Have Mercy" set to an American folk melody that we have sung before. In response to the assurance of pardon, we will sing a setting of "Create in Me a Clean Heart" (Psalm 51:10-12) that was introduced at the Ash Wednesday service. As we avoid the use of "alleluias" during Lent, we will return to the familiar "Old Hundredth" tune for the doxology after the offering. Finally, the choir will introduce a sung choral response from China, "May the Love of the Lord," after the benediction; after several weeks, the congregation will join in this song.

Lenten organ meditations: Once again, Central Presbyterian Church on the Virginia side of Bristol is offering a series of half-hour organ meditations at noon on Wednesdays during Lent. The first will be March 12 and feature Dr. Charles Rhinehart, organ professor emeritus at Virginia Intermont College. On March 19, Central's organist, Joy Smith-Briggs, will play. There is no charge for admission, but donations are cheerfully accepted.

Arts Series: The final Arts Series program of this season takes place Sunday, April 6, at 3:00 p. m. and showcases two members of the famed Baltimore Consort who appeared in our series in 2004. Flutist Mindy Rosenfeld and lutenist Ronn McFarlanewill delight us with music for this instrumental combo. Details later, but save the date! Suggested ticket donation for this concert is $15 for adults and $5 for students ages 6 through college. That's a little more than for previous programs but still more than worth the price.
