Mission Worker John McCall Speaks Sunday
John McCall

This Sunday, February 23, we will be privileged to have with us John McCall, who has served the church and the Taiwanese people as a mission worker for more than 16 years. He will preach at both services, and lead a combined Sunday School class from 10:00 to 10:40 in the Fellowship Hall. His sermon will be drawn from Luke 19:1-10, and its theme will be grace and opportunity. Do not miss this rare opportunity!

Wednesday Night Programs for Feb. 26

Join us Wednesday, February 26, at 6:15 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall for pat two of "Seven Streams of New Congregational Song," a presentation by Steve Fey on the new hymnal. Student Fellowship small groups and Wednesday Night Kids will meet separately at 6:00. Come early and enjoy intergenerational fellowship over a shared meal at 5:30.

Wednesday Night Kids

Our lesson in the Huzzah for the King! series for February 26 is "Resisting Temptation." A medieval potter will help us learn about the character trait of self-control. Our scripture readings will be Proverbs 29:11 and Matthew 4:1-11, the story of Jesus' temptation in the desert. Join us!

Session to Receive New Congregants March 2

All those interested in joining our congregation are warmly invited to meet with the FPC Session at 10:20 a.m. on Sunday, March 2, in the chapel.

Ash Wednesday Worship March 5

Please plan to participate in our Ash Wednesday worship service, to be held March 5 in the sanctuary. A nursery will be provided. The service will begin at 6:20, after the fellowship dinner.

Last Chance to Register for Women's Retreat

Ronda Paulson

We are on the verge of sending the conference center in Blowing Rock the number of registrants for our annual women's retreat. If you would like to join us March 7-9 for a weekend of sharing and exploring led by Christian speaker Ronda Paulson, you must register right away. Brochures and forms are available at the church.

Our theme this year is "Surrender." Ronda will help us consider why women struggle with letting go. This weekend will challenge us to surrender all aspects of our lives to God as we reflect on the story of Moses leading the Israelites out of Egypt. Ronda believes that God calls us to surrender to Him, no matter how difficult the circumstances of our lives.

Over the weekend we will have time for Bible-based sharing and exploring, individual contemplation, connecting with other women in small-group discussions, shopping, hiking, napping, fellowship, and stillness. Remember to bring along a mug for the mug exchange!

Baroque Trumpet Concert Coming Up Soon

Clarence Mitchell II

Our Arts Series continues Sunday, March 2, with a concert of baroque trumpet solos and duets, presented at 3:00 p.m. in the sanctuary by Clarence Mitchell II and Dr. David Champouillon. The Pro Musica Chamber Ensemble, directed by Tim and Kim Barrett, will provide the orchestral accompaniment. The program will be concertos by composers Franceschini, Torelli, Viviani, Telemann, Purcell, Vivaldi, Fasch, Handel, Tartini, and Stradella.

Mitchell is retired from the United States Air Force Band (Washington, D.C.) and lives in Fort Washington, Maryland. He retired as a senior master sergeant with 28 years of service. He earned a bachelor of music degree in composition from Temple University. Champouillon is a Bach artist/clinician and professor of trumpet at East Tennessee State University.

David Champouillon

Mitchell and Champouillon served in the USAF Band of the Golden Gate from 1979 to 1983 and have been friends for more than 33 years. They studied together with Laurie McGaw, then the associate principal trumpet of the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra. They both also studied with the late Professor William Fielder of Rutgers University, who taught Wynton Marsalis. Further study for Mitchell was with the late Seymour Rosenfeld, second trumpet of the Philadelphia Orchestra. Champouillon went on to study trumpet with the late Gilbert Johnson, solo trumpet of the Philadelphia Orchestra.

Arts Series events are free and open to the public. Suggested ticket donations are $10 for adults and $5 for students ages 6 through college.

Music Notes

Sunday's music participants: Sanctuary Choir, Youth Bells.

Peter Mathews

Sunday's music: The Sanctuary Choir anthem, "The Best of Rooms," is a setting of a poem by Robert Herrick (1591-1674), an English poet and cleric. The four brief lines of the text call on us to give our very best, our heart, to Christ. The musical setting is by Peter Mathews. Mathews (b. 1944), a native of Canada, was educated in Michigan and Missouri and has spent his professional career performing, teaching, and composing in Central Florida. His lyrical melody evokes the thoughtful and contemplative nature of the words.

The Youth Handbell Choir will offer the prelude for the 11:00 service, "Ring Praises" by Sallie Lloyd. This is an acclamation of original music that calls us to worship joyfully.
