Ethiopia Mission Under Way

A classroom of students at Berhane Yesus Elementary School last year.

Peggy Hill and Gordon Turnbull are in Ethiopia working to deepen our connection to God's mission there. They were invited by the Western Wollega Bethel Synod to share in a celebration of the longstanding Presbyterian mission in Dembi Dollo, where our congregation is a strong supporter of the Berhane Yesus (Light of Jesus) Elementary School.

While there, Peggy and Gordon will visit with Michael and Rachel Weller, our PCUSA mission connection in Ethiopia, as well as with the staff and students of the school. In addition to the Presbyterian mission celebration on Saturday, Peggy and Gordon will share in the dedication of a new church on Sunday, February 16, a service at which Gordon will preach.

Please continue to pray for this mission trip, our partners in Ethiopia, and the deepening work of our church's commitment to God's mission in the world.

Wednesday Night Programs for Feb. 19

Join us Wednesday, February 19, at 6:15 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall for "Seven Streams of New Congregation Song," a presentation by Steve Fey on the new hymnal. Student Fellowship small groups and Wednesday Night Kids will meet separately at 6:00. Come early and enjoy intergenerational fellowship over a shared meal at 5:30.

Wednesday Night Kids

Our lesson in the Huzzah for the King! series for February 19 is "Sticking Close," and it's about loyalty. A knight of the Middle Ages will be on hand to help us reflect on this character trait, and our scripture readings will be Proverbs 17:24 and John 10:1-21, the story of the good shepherd. Join us!

Register Now for Women's Retreat

The Lord will fight for you today, you need only to be still. Exodus 14:14

Invite a friend and get away for the weekend at our annual Women's Retreat. Join us March 7-9 for a weekend of sharing and exploring led by Christian speaker Ronda Paulson. Registration is under way!

Our theme this year is "Surrender," and Ronda will help us consider why we as women struggle with letting go. This weekend will challenge us to surrender all aspects of our lives to God as we consider the story of Moses leading the Israelites out of Egypt. Ronda believes that God calls us to surrender to Him, no matter how difficult the circumstances of our lives.

Over the weekend we will have time for Bible-based sharing and exploring, individual contemplation, connecting with other women in small-group discussions, shopping, hiking, napping, fellowship, and stillness. Bring along a mug for the mug exchange!

Ronda Paulson

About Our Speaker

Ronda Paulson is an adjunct professor of biology at Milligan College, where she also coaches cheer and dance. She travels the country speaking to women's groups as well as to teenagers. She has published her first book, Why God Made Colic: A First-Time Mother's Journey, and is working on her second book, I Love You More Than Chocolate. Ronda is married to Corey, and they have two children, Sophie, 11, and Mac, 7.

If you struggle with relinquishing control to God, you will not want to miss Ronda's teaching. She will remind us that with surrender comes glorious freedom in Christ.

Prices and Lodging

The price for the retreat includes two nights' lodging and five meals. A $25 deposit will reserve your place. Scholarship assistance is available. We will gladly accept donations to help provide scholarships and underwrite the cost of the retreat.

The cost of the weekend if you stay in a private room is $188; if you double up, $128; and in a room for three, $110. Handicapped-accessible rooms are available on request. For information about the Blowing Rock Conference Center, see www.brccenter.org.

Music Notes

Sunday's music participants: Sanctuary Choir and Sanctuary Bells.

Sunday's music: The Sanctuary Choir anthem, "Sing We Merrily," is by Adrian Batten (1591-1637), a lesser known English composer of the early seventeenth century. Working in the Tudor period, he served as a musician in several London churches, wrote extensively for the church in English, and compiled one of the most important collections of music of his period, the Batten Organbook.

The choir anthem is a setting of the first four verses of Psalm 81 in the Coverdale translation, which predates the King James Version. The music picks up the joyous character of the text and at times illustrates musically what the text is saying. In the modern NRSV translation, verse four begins, "Blow the trumpet at the new moon"; the sixteenth-century text is "Blow up the trumpet in the new moon." This is set to music that is trumpetlike, with an ascending line. Throughout the anthem, Batten is sensitive to what the text says, and he uses the music to highlight the meaning of the words.

The bell prelude is a setting of the great hymn, "Praise to the Lord, the Almighty," always appropriate at the beginning of worship.

Clarence Mitchell II

Arts Series: It's not too late to put the next program on your calendar! Three Sundays from now, it will be our privilege to host guest trumpeter Clarence Mitchell II, accompanied by his colleague and friend Dr. David Champouillon and members of the Pro Musica Chamber Ensemble, a group of local string players. Sunday, March 2, at 3:00 p.m. in the sanctuary, you will hear music by composers Telemann, Purcell, Vivaldi, and more! Suggested ticket donation is $10 for adults and $5 for students ages 6 through college.
