Stewardship: Finding the Grace for Gratitude

Each family within our congregation is an important part of the life of First Presbyterian Church. Our offerings of time, talent, and money, added to other members' gifts, help to bless our church family and many in our community.

The Stewardship Committee encourages prayerful reflection on moments of grace in the life of our church and on how each of us can respond in gratitude through sacrificial giving. Our hope is for all of us to participate in the 2014 Operating Budget Stewardship Campaign.

2014 Operating Budget Stewardship Campaign Update (November 11)

Number of pledge commitments received to date: 124

Dollar amount of pledge commitments to date: $496,750

Operating budget income goal: $952,514

Sing a New Song in Our Combined Worship Service November 24

The new Presbyterian song resource, Glory to God: The Presbyterian Hymnal, which has already earned the praise of musicians and church music scholars across denominations, has arrived! Our early and late congregations will worship together to dedicate our new hymnals Sunday, November 24. The combined service will take place at 10:30 a.m. in lieu of the regular 8:30 and 11:00 services. There will be no Cherub Choir rehearsal, and Sunday School will begin at 9:30, 15 minutes earlier than usual. Please plan to join us for this festive occasion!

Farewell to Good and Faithful Servants

So what's to become of those good and faithful servants, the blue hymnals currently used in our sanctuary and throughout our church? Prior to the dedication of our new hymnals on November 24, the worship committee will be removing them from the sanctuary, and sorting out those that were given by current members of our congregation. If you are one of those folks, you will be welcome to take one home to keep. (Watch this space for more details.) After this distribution, a set of blue hymnals will be given to King University to be used in the chapel and music department for worship and study. Their usefulness and ministry will continue after and beyond their time in the pews at First Presbyterian Church.

So to Honor Him

First Presbyterian's Alternative Giving Program

to support local agencies and missions of our church

Our finest gifts we bring ...

pa-rum-pum-pum-pum ...

to lay before the King ...

The Evangelism & Outreach Committee invites you to "Shop the World" this Christmas season, giving gifts in the form of financial contributions to local and global causes that communicate and share the love of Christ near and far.

The process is simple:

  1. Complete one form for each person being honored with your gift.
  2. From the list on the form, select the organization or mission to receive your financial contribution.*
  3. Attach your check, payable to First Presbyterian Church, to the form and submit the form to the church office.
  4. If you prefer to have the church office send the recipient, on your behalf, an acknowledgment of your gift, be sure to submit the form by December 10 to allow time for delivery by Christmas.

Forms containing information about the organizations or missions are available in the narthex, outside the Fellowship Hall, and in the church office, as well as here on our website.

Your gift through the Alternative Giving Program will be the perfect fit every time, sharing the spirit of the season in ways that truly make a difference.

*Please note: Your tax-deductible gift is to First Presbyterian Church. FPC will combine your gift with others to the selected organization or mission without providing specific donor details. If you wish acknowledgment by the organization or mission receiving your gift, please consider making your donation directly to it.

Faith and Finances Series Concludes

Tom Faucette takes up the final segment of our three-part series, Faith and Finances, at 6:15 p.m. on Wednesday, November 20. Join us at 5:30 for fellowship over a meal of lemon herb fish. Sixth- through twelfth-graders will leave for Student Ministries small-group discussions at 6:00, and Wednesday Night Kids will gather at the hall door when they see the Kids' Time sign, also around 6:00.

Children enjoyed decorating their gingerbread houses last year.

Wednesday Night Kids

It seems early, but we will make gingerbread houses on November 20. With lots of decorations from which to choose and many hands available to help, we will each leave with a uniquely decorated gingerbread mansion. Join us for this evening of fun, as we think of the Christmas season ahead.

Leaf Day Blows In on Saturday

The Deacons' Household Task Team is happy to announce that our annual Leaf Day will be this Saturday, November 16. We are now recruiting people to serve on teams armed with rakes and blowers and ladders to take care of leaves and gutters.

To Serve

If you are interested in serving on a Leaf Team, email Gordon Turnbull at gturnbull@fpcbristol.org or call him at the church to get your name on the list. On Leaf Day, team members will meet in the Fellowship Hall at 9:00 a.m. for coffee, doughnuts, and directions, then head out on their rounds. Each team should be finished by noon.

To Request Service

If you would you like a visit by a Leaf Team, please call the church office at (423) 764-7176 to let us know. We will call back to confirm before the event.

Raise Food Pantry's Stock This Saturday

Boy Scouts will return to local doorsteps this Saturday morning to pick up the bags they left behind last Saturday, and they will be hoping they are heavy with canned food items. We encourage everyone to participate in the Scouting for Food drive, which will put food on the shelves of the Bristol Emergency Food Pantry. If you do, be sure to put your bag outside by your front door by 8:00 a.m., Saturday, November 16.

If you miss the Scouts on their return visit, you can bring your donated food to the church and leave it in the grocery cart in the Fellowship Hallway. Jim White has volunteered to take it from there to the Food Pantry. You can also take donated food directly to the Food Pantry, located at 21 Washington Street, in front of First Baptist Church, whenever it is open. The Food Pantry's hours are 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

If you choose to make a financial donation, please make your check payable to Bristol Emergency Food Pantry. The mailing address is P.O. Box 1471, Bristol, VA 24203. For more information, call Jim at 423-571-4449.

Teddy Goes to Fairmount

teddy grahams boxHelp hungry students in our neighborhood school keep their energy up through the afternoon! We are now collecting Teddy Grahams for our Fairmount Elementary kids who can't afford to buy their own snacks. As always, please place your contributions in the little red schoolhouse in the Fellowship Hallway. Thank you!

It Isn't Fair, but Let It Go

Members of the Sunday Night Student Fellowship are engaged in a three-part series, Let It Go, that considers anger and revenge, the deserving and the undeserving, and forgiveness and healing. Sixth- through twelfth-graders meet in the Youth Wing at 6:00 p.m.

November 17: It's Not Fair

Bottom line: Forgiven people forgive.

We all want forgiveness. And at one point or another we all need it. But we aren't always as willing to give it out as we are to accept it. Thankfully, the Bible tells us that God doesn't measure our sins to see what is forgivable and what isn't. He doesn't say yes to some things and no to others. If God is able to forgive every offense, what would it look like if we did the same? What would it look like for us to take the forgiveness we have received and pass it on to other people who don't deserve it, other people just like us?

Music Notes

Sunday's music participants: Sanctuary Choir.

John Ferguson

Sunday's music: The Sanctuary Choir anthem, "New Songs of Celebration Render," is in a direct line from our Presbyterian roots in the worship in Calvin's churches. In Calvin's Geneva, churches sang the Psalms in the vernacular to metrical settings. Erik Routley (1917-1982) created a modern poetic setting of Psalm 98 for use with a melody written originally for Calvin's worship and sung initially with the text of Psalm 118. About this new text, one resource writes, "Routley has captured in contemporary language the spirit of the psalmist with whom we join in praising God as Creator, Savior, and Judge." Composer John Ferguson (b. 1941) has taken these materials, and given them a dancelike character that reflects both the 16th-century melody and the 20th-century text.

Christmas pageant: The children's Christmas pageant will take place Wednesday, December 18, at 5:30 p.m. in the sanctuary, followed by the Joy Gift dinner. Due to the lateness of Thanksgiving this year, the first pageant rehearsal and costume fitting will take place Wednesday, November 20, at 4:30 p.m. in the sanctuary. All children, from age 4 through fifth grade, are invited to be part of this production. Even if your child is not currently singing in a children's choir, it's not too late for him or her to learn the music for the pageant! See the Feys if you have questions.
