So to Honor Him

First Presbyterian's Alternative Giving Program

to support local agencies and missions of our church

Our finest gifts we bring ...

pa-rum-pum-pum-pum ...

to lay before the King ...

The Evangelism & Outreach Committee invites you to "Shop the World" this Christmas season, giving gifts in the form of financial contributions to local and global causes that communicate and share the love of Christ near and far.

The process is simple:

  1. Complete one form for each person being honored with your gift.
  2. From the list on the form, select the organization or mission to receive your financial contribution.*
  3. Attach your check, payable to First Presbyterian Church, to the form and submit the form to the church office.
  4. If you prefer to have the church office send the recipient, on your behalf, an acknowledgment of your gift, be sure to submit the form by December 10 to allow time for delivery by Christmas.

Forms will be available in the narthex, outside the Fellowship Hall, and in the church office beginning Sunday, November 10. Your gift through the Alternative Giving Program will be the perfect fit every time, sharing the spirit of the season in ways that truly make a difference.

*Please note: Your tax-deductible gift is to First Presbyterian Church. FPC will combine your gift with others to the selected organization or mission without providing specific donor details. If you wish acknowledgment by the organization or mission receiving your gift, please consider making your donation directly to it.

Stewardship: Grace and Gratitude

Each family within our congregation is an important part of the life of First Presbyterian Church. Our offerings of time, talent, and money, added to other members' gifts, help to bless our church family and many in our community.

The Stewardship Committee encourages prayerful reflection on moments of grace in the life of our church and on how each of us can respond in gratitude through sacrificial giving. Our hope is for all of us to participate in the 2014 Operating Budget Stewardship Campaign.

Church and School Remain Beacon of Hope to Felipe Camarão

brazilian boys

Gordon Turnbull and John Vann recently returned from a visit with our partner church and school in Felipe Camarão, an impoverished and densely populated neighborhood of 90,000 people in the city of Natal, Brazil.

The purpose of the trip was to meet with the leadership of the Felipe Camarão Independent Presbyterian Church of Brazil (IPIB), the faculty and staff of the Bethel School (pre-K through third grade) affiliated with the church, and the leadership of the Bethel Association, the certifying organization of the IPIB, responsible for the fiscal oversight and compliance of the school.

Both Gordon and John report feeling encouraged by being with our brothers and sisters of Felipe Camarão, some of whom our church has watched grow up over more than ten years. The depth and spirit of our partnership is a treasure that God continues to bless across the miles.

Upon the call of Pastor Fernando to a church in the south of Brazil last January, Pastor Rubens (pronounced "Hubens"), a long-time pastor of the region, took responsibility for the church in Felipe Camarão in addition to his pastoral duties at the Third Presbyterian Church of Natal, located in the neighboring barrio of Quintas. Pastor Rubens is well known to the community and is working effectively with the elders of Felipe Camarão to minister to the congregation.

Currently, 112 students are enrolled in the school, with the majority in prekindergarten and kindergarten classes, and about 25 students in grades one through three. The school has developed a reputation in the community for offering high quality education that prepares the students to successfully continue in public schools or, if space is available, in a nearby charter school funded by Banco Bradesco.

The challenges are many in the neighborhood: unemployment remains high, hunger and living conditions are substandard, health care is inaccessible, drug and alcohol abuse by children as young as ten years of age is common, and teenage prostitution is another high risk factor influencing the culture of this poor neighborhood and, in fact, each child's very future. The school and the church remain a beacon of hope and comfort in the community, working together to reach out to children, parents, and families to share the love and hope that is theirs in Christ.

It was very evident that our continued involvement is important to the church's and school's missions. Financial support is seen as a continued blessing, meeting the funding needs of faculty salaries, basic school supplies, uniforms, and food for the children each day. Without help like ours, the school simply could not continue to operate. Living conditions for the students are such that without the spiritual, physical, and intellectual sustenance and love received at the school each day and in the church, the children would often be left to survive on their own, and at tremendous cost.

But of even greater importance is the spiritual connection between our two church bodies. In the first meeting of their visit, Pastor Rubens read from Paul's letter to the Philippians 1:3-6: I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus. This very aptly set the tone for the subsequent discussions and affirmed the strength of our mutual desire for continuing in this mission together.

Gordon and John look forward to sharing with our congregation in the coming weeks and months the successes witnessed and the evolving needs of the school and church. God has richly blessed the union of our two congregations, which he ordained more than ten years ago. It is beautiful and comforting to know that our brothers and sisters in Felipe Camarão remember us daily in their prayers as we also remember them in our daily walk.

Open Your Hymnals for Our Combined Worship Service November 24

The new Presbyterian song resource, Glory to God: The Presbyterian Hymnal, which has already earned the praise of musicians and church music scholars across denominations, has arrived! Our early and late congregations will worship together to dedicate our new hymnals Sunday, November 24. The combined service will take place at 10:30 a.m. in lieu of the regular 8:30 and 11:00 services. There will be no Cherub Choir rehearsal, and Sunday School will begin at 9:30, 15 minutes earlier than usual. Please plan to join us for this festive occasion!

Presbyterian Women Meet Tuesday

On the morning of Tuesday, November 12, Presbyterian Women will meet in room 123 at the church at 11:00. Bible study will follow at 11:30, and we will have lunch together in the parlor afterward. Please remember to make lunch reservations with the church office and bring any cancelled stamps with you. We look forward to seeing you!

Faith and Finances Series Continues Wednesday

Tom Faucette takes up the second segment of our three-part series, Faith and Finances, at 6:15 p.m. on Wednesday, November 13. Join us at 5:30 for fellowship over a meal of chicken Divan. Sixth- through twelfth-graders will head upstairs to the Youth Wing for Student Ministries small-group discussions at 6:00, and Wednesday Night Kids will gather at the hall door when they see the Kid's Time sign, also around 6:00.

Wednesday Night Kids

This will be our last lesson in the KaPOP! and KaBOOM! series. We will review the traits holy, immutable, and eternal. Trying some new experiments and revisiting some of our favorite activities, we will be reminded of the awesome God we have been learning about each week. Come play and learn with us!

Deacons' Leaf Day Blows In on November 16

The Deacons' Household Task Team is happy to announce that our annual Leaf Day will be Saturday, November 16. We are now recruiting people to serve on teams armed with rakes and blowers and ladders to take care of leaves and gutters.

To Serve

If you are interested in serving on a Leaf Team, email Gordon Turnbull at gturnbull@fpcbristol.org or call him at the church to get your name on the list. On Leaf Day, team members will meet in the Fellowship Hall at 9:00 a.m. for coffee, doughnuts, and directions, then head out on their rounds. Each team should be finished by noon.

To Request Service

If you would you like a visit by a Leaf Team, please call the church office at (423) 764-7176 to let us know. We will call back to confirm before the event.

Scouting for Donations to Stock Food Pantry Shelves

We encourage everyone to participate in the upcoming Scouting for Food drive to benefit the Bristol Emergency Food Pantry. Boy Scouts will leave empty grocery sacks at residents' front doors on Saturday, November 9, and return to pick up donated food the following Saturday, November 16.

If you miss the Scouts on their return visit, you can bring your donated food to the church and leave it in the grocery cart in the Fellowship Hallway. Jim White has volunteered to take it from there to the Food Pantry. You can also take donated food directly to the Food Pantry, located at 21 Washington Street, in front of First Baptist Church. The Food Pantry is open from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Jim reports that the Food Pantry has been overwhelmed by current requests for food and expects a flood of requests in the coming months. He says the Food Pantry is running low on both food and funds, and asks us all to donate whatever we can.

If you choose to make a financial donation, please make your check payable to Bristol Emergency Food Pantry. The mailing address is P.O. Box 1471, Bristol, VA 24203. For more information, call Jim at 423-571-4449.

Put Your Stamp on Mission Work

The Presbyterian Women want your used stamps, except those featuring the US flag or the Liberty Bell. The PW participate in a program that transforms all other used stamps into thousands of dollars for mission work around the world. Please bring your used stamps (a bit of envelope is OK) to the church and put them in the special box outside the Fellowship Hall. Or you can give them to a PW member. Thank you!

Teddy Goes to School

teddy grahams boxHelp hungry students in our neighborhood school keep their energy up through the afternoon! We are now collecting Teddy Grahams for our Fairmount Elementary kids who can't afford to buy their own snacks. As always, please place your contributions in the little red schoolhouse in the Fellowship Hallway. Thank you!

It Isn't Fair, but Let It Go

Members of the Sunday Night Student Fellowship are engaged in a three-part series, Let It Go, that considers anger and revenge, the deserving and the undeserving, and forgiveness and healing. Sixth- through twelfth-graders meet in the Youth Wing at 6:00 p.m.

November 10: It's Not Fair

Bottom line: Forgiven people forgive.

We all want forgiveness. And at one point or another we all need it. But we aren't always as willing to give it out as we are to accept it. Thankfully, the Bible tells us that God doesn't measure our sins to see what is forgivable and what isn't. He doesn't say yes to some things and no to others. If God is able to forgive every offense, what would it look like if we did the same? What would it look like for us to take the forgiveness we have received and pass it on to other people who don't deserve it, other people just like us?

Children to Help Lead Early Worship Sunday

For several months now, we have been opening our Sunday School hour by singing "Jesus Says, 'Don't Be Afraid,'" led by Shannan Miller. At the 8:30 service on November 10, our Sunday School children will help lead us in worship by singing this song. We ask the children to gather at 8:15 Sunday morning. Ms. Shannan has distributed information sheets; if you didn't get one, or need another, just ask.

Music Notes

Sunday's music participants: Sanctuary Choir.

George Frederic Handel

Sunday's music: The Te Deum is a fourth-century Latin hymn that is both praise of God and a declaration of faith. Numerous composers have made settings of this hymn throughout the ages, in both the Latin original text and the English translation found in the sixteenth-century Book of Common Prayer. In 1743, George Frederic Handel (1865-1759) composed a multimovement setting of the English text to commemorate a minor military victory of his king, George II. The Sanctuary Choir anthem this week, "O Lord, in Thee Have I Trusted," is the final movement of the Dettingen Te Deum. Its joyous character is reminiscent of several movements from Handel's Messiah of the previous year. With a text inspired by the Psalms, it calls out to God, proclaiming faith and asking protection.

Christmas pageant: It's hard to believe, but the first children's Christmas pageant rehearsal and costume fitting will take place Wednesday, November 20, at 4:30 p.m. in the sanctuary. All children aged 4 through fifth grade are invited to be part of this production. If your child is not currently singing in a children's choir, he or she still has time to learn the music for the pageant! See the Feys if you have questions.

Sunday rehearsal: Just a reminder to the Jubilate Youth Choir that this Sunday's rehearsal begins at 5:15 p.m. instead of our regular 5:00 time, so that the Feys can make it back from their recital in Colonial Heights. We will finish as usual at 5:45.

Program of note: The Feys will play a program of organ and piano solos and duets on Sunday, November 10, at 3:00 p.m., at Colonial Heights Presbyterian Church, 213 Colonial Heights Road, Kingsport. The church has a recently installed pipe organ purchased from FPC in Johnson City and completely reworked by Colby and Associates of Johnson City. The program is free and open to the public.
