All Saints Worship Wednesday Evening, Oct. 30

We will worship together in an All Saints service in the sanctuary on October 30 next week, in lieu of our regular Wednesday evening programming. First, we will gather in the Fellowship Hall at 5:30 for a companionable dinner of pot roast and vegetables. The nursery will open for babies and toddlers at 5:15, as usual, but there will be no Student Ministries Small Groups or Wednesday Night Kids activities. The worship service will begin at 6:15 p.m. Please plan to join us!

Alternative Giving Program Beginning Soon

christmas box

As we approach November, with the holidays soon to follow, the members of the Evangelism & Outreach Committee announce an opportunity for members of First Presbyterian Church to honor anyone on their gift list through Alternative Giving.

Alternative Giving is simply the making of a donation to one of the many ministries our church supports, in honor of someone for whom you would otherwise have purchased a different kind of gift.

Watch for more information in Windows and on our website in early November.

First Pledge Commitments Made to Sustain Ministries, Programs, Operations in 2014

Last week on Stewardship Sunday we dedicated our pledges together in a combined worship service. This week we can announce that, as of October 22, we have received 102 commitments to pledge, for a total commitment of $416,750, or 43.75 percent of our goal. The income needed to operate our programs, ministries, and operations in the coming year is $952,514. Please continue to reflect prayerfully on how we can achieve our goal.

FPC's Financial Summary for September

We here present the highlights of our year-to-date financial summary as of September 30, followed by a tabular summary, both prepared by Aaron Brooks, Finance Chair.

Highlights

  • Pledges/Offerings/Reimbursements in the first nine months of the year were $992 less than we had expected.
  • Anticipated Budget Shortfall: Through September 2013, we anticipated having to utilize approximately $35,321 of our savings/reserves to meet current-year operating requirements. As noted, none of these funds have had to be utilized.
  • Expenditures continue to track favorably to expectations, coming in through the end of September at $17,428 below budget.
  • Expense Notes: (1) Interest paid to date on our Eastman Credit Union capital loan was $31,012, and (2) utility expenses, year-to-date, were $41,696, which is $5,854 under budget and $6,516 less than the same time last year.
  • Capital Loan: The balance with Eastman Credit Union at September 30, 2013, was $1,041,524.

You Can Now Give Online through Our Website

We are pleased to announce that online giving to FPC is now possible through our website, www.fpcbristol.org. Our hope is that you will find this capability both a convenient way to make pledge payments or other donations and also a practical help in tracking your stewardship commitments.

Note: You cannot make a pledge commitment online; you do that in the usual way. But you can make online pledge payments.

What Is Online Giving?

The term online giving encompasses a wide range of secure, automatic payment methods that can be used to make regular church offerings and other contributions without writing checks, carrying cash, or preparing envelopes. It works the same way as the automatic payment methods that many of us use to make mortgage or utility payments and to receive payroll earnings or Social Security income.

Why Give Online?

It is convenient. You do not need to write checks or bring cash to church when you contribute automatically. Your contributions are transmitted electronically and deposited directly into the church bank account.

It keeps you on track with stewardship commitments. When you schedule automated offerings, you don't have the worry of falling behind on pledge payments.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. How do automatic contributions work?

A. You choose your payment method, start date, frequency, and contribution amount. Your donations will be processed and deposited in the church bank account on the date or dates you have scheduled.

Q. When will my contribution be processed?

A. Your contribution will be processed each month on the date or dates you have authorized.

Q. What if I need to cancel or place my donation on a temporary hold?

A. You can edit, suspend, or cancel a scheduled transaction in your online giving account. Please notify the church business administrator, Betsy Galliher, if you encounter any problems.

Q. What can I use to show that I made a donation?

A. The itemized list of electronic transactions that appears on your bank or credit card statement can be used as proof of your donations. You can also view and print your online donation history (see below). In addition, FPC mails contribution reports in July and October as well as year-end Charitable Contributions Reports for tax purposes.

Q. How do I get started?

A. To get started, go to www.fpcbristol.org and click on the Online Giving button at the top right of the page. You will then see the first screen of Vanco's secure online giving service. You will first create an online profile (use the button in the lower right quadrant). This is a one-time task. Please review the information you enter, then be sure to save your profile. It will enable you to change or stop a recurring donation at any time, and it will allow you to view and print your online donation history.

After you have saved your profile, you will see the Online Donation screen. Follow the prompts to schedule your transactions. You will be asked for a payment method in the Account drop-down menu on the Donation Information screen. You will be able to choose from direct debit of your checking or savings account and payment by means of a credit or a debit card.

We Host Family Promise of Bristol Guests Next Week

We will host guests on our campus next week as part of our Family Promise of Bristol ministry. Thank you to all the FPC volunteers who are contributing to this effort!

Good News Pancake Breakfast This Saturday

The Good News Jail & Prison Ministry will hold a pancake breakfast at Fatz Cafe this Saturday, October 26, from 7:00 to 10:00 a.m. For $7 you can enjoy large pancakes, bacon or sausage, a fruit cup, and a drink. The money raised will be used to support Good News chaplains in Sullivan County and Bristol, Virginia, jails. Fatz is located at 1175 Volunteer Parkway in Bristol, Tennessee.

Put Your Stamp on Mission Work

The Presbyterian Women want your used stamps, except those featuring the US flag or the Liberty Bell. The PW participate in a program that transforms all other used stamps into thousands of dollars for mission work around the world. Please bring your used stamps (a bit of envelope is OK) to the church and put them in the special box outside the Fellowship Hall. Or you can give them to a PW member. Thank you!

First Presbyterian Care Shepherds Need You

The goal of FPC's Care Shepherd ministry is to show Christian love and care to those of our church family who are in need. Opportunities for volunteering include providing meals to those just home from the hospital, sending a card or making a phone call to someone in a special care facility, and providing comfort in other situations.

Volunteers serve one month at a time on a Care Shepherd team that coordinates the needs of the congregation for that month. We are humbly seeking volunteers to serve in October, November, December, and January.

For more information or to volunteer, please contact Lorri Looney at jeffandlorri@msn.com or 423-573-1676.

Fairmount Snack Program Goes Back to School

School is back in session, and that means it's time to perk up the hungry students in our neighborhood school who can't afford to buy snacks to see them through the afternoon. We are now collecting small pretzels. The small sticks and the small curved pretzels are best for fitting into snack-sized portions for our Fairmount Elementary kids. As before, please place your contributions in the little red schoolhouse in the Fellowship Hallway. Thank you!

Men's Breakfast Next Saturday, November 2

The men of the church have returned to their original breakfast schedule: the first Saturday of the month at 8:00 a.m.  All men of FPC and their friends are invited to November's breakfast this Saturday in the Fellowship Hall.

Hot Dog and Marshmallow Roast for Grades 3-5 This Sunday

Students in third through fifth grades are invited to a hot dog and marshmallow roast this Sunday, October 27, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.  We will have a scavenger hunt, play games, and roast our hot dogs and marshmallows over the fire pit behind the church.

Students should be dropped off and picked up near the entrance to the Fellowship Hall at the rear of the church. For more information, contact Ann Abel.

Final 5th Quarter at Katie Arnold's Home Nov. 1

After the Tennessee High School home game next Friday, November 1, the FPC high school youth's final 5th Quarter party of the season will be held at Katie Arnold's home. Be there!

Sunday Night Youth Series: Babel

What do a tower built in ancient times to reach the heavens and a cell phone have in common? A lot more than you may think. The people responsible for the tower of Babel used the technology of their day to elevate themselves, taking God out of the picture. We use the technology of our day in similar ways. The technology itself isn't bad or good, but how we choose to use it is important. The right kind of relationship with technology will help us to do the right kinds of things with it. Join us this Sunday as we begin a three-part series of discussions on this topic. Sixth- through twelfth-graders meet in the Youth Wing at 6:00 p.m.

Session Three, October 27: Social Network

Today's technology enables us to connect with people in more ways than ever before. With that ability comes an incredible capacity to affect other people. We can use technology to encourage people or show compassion. We can use technology to help people in need. Or we can use technology to hurt, slander, or even destroy someone. So how will you use technology? How will you use this tool to affect the people around you?

From Steve & Vicki Fey

Music Notes

Sunday's music participants: Sanctuary Choir and Sanctuary Bells.

Gabriel Fauré

Sunday's music: Composer Gabriel Fauré (1845-1924) spent four decades as an organist while also teaching and composing, but no solo organ compositions survive. However, he composed several sacred choral works, most notably his Requiem and the Sanctuary Choir anthem, "Cantique de Jean Racine" (Song of Jean Racine), an award-winning, student composition from 1865. The text began as a Latin hymn, and Jean Racine paraphrased it in French in 1688; the choir will sing an English translation of his text. It asks Christ to bestow on us light, grace, and favor; the songs and praise we sing are the gifts we return in thanks. The music expresses these thoughts with remarkable lyricism, and the anthem has remained a core work of sacred choral literature since its composition.

Morningstar Flute Ensemble: If you attended the 11:00 worship service on July 21, you will remember the beautiful flute music by the Morningstar Flute Ensemble. They offered their services in return for use of the sanctuary for recording. The fruit of that recording, the CD Tranquility, is now available. The title is taken from a composition of the same name written for the ensemble (and included on the CD) by Ann Holler. If you would like a CD, contact the Feys.

Programs of note: This weekend the Paramount Chamber Players present the first concerts of this ninth season of chamber music in the Tri-Cities! Titled Unknown Legends, these programs will feature works for piano and strings by Germaine Tailleferre, Joachim Raff, and Gabriel Fauré, and will include guest cellist Thomas Maternik. Maternik, originally from France, teaches both in London and in Lenoir, North Carolina. The programs will take place Friday, October 25, at 7:30 p.m. in Mathes Hall on the campus of ETSU in Johnson City; Saturday, October 26, at 7:30 p.m. at the Paramount Center in Bristol; and Sunday, October 27, at 3:00 p.m. at Sinking Spring Presbyterian Church in Abingdon. Tickets for the Friday and Saturday concerts are $12 for general admission, $10 for seniors, and $5 for students with a student ID. The Sunday concert is $10 for adults and no charge for students.

Christmas pageant: The children's choirs have been rehearsing music for the Christmas pageant and are now trying out for speaking parts! The Christmas pageant is open to all children, ages 4th-5th grade. Children who would like to be in the pageant may come to either of the children's choir rehearsals or show up at the first pageant rehearsal on Wednesday, November 20, at 4:30 p.m.
