Dedication of Pledges in Combined Service This Sunday

Please plan to join us for an important event in our life together this weekend. October 20 is Stewardship Sunday, when our early and late congregations gather together in worship to dedicate our stewardship pledges. The combined service will take place at 10:30 a.m. in lieu of separate 8:30 and 11:00 services. There will be no Cherub Choir rehearsal, and Sunday School will begin at 9:30, 15 minutes earlier than usual.

Parents of Cherub Choir members, please note: Your little singers will need to come to the children's choir room promptly at 10:15 a.m. to robe. Any help you can give with robing and sitting with them will be greatly appreciated.

Arts Series Opens on a Foggy Afternoon in Our Sanctuary
Ryan Fogg

This Sunday afternoon, October 20, pianist Ryan Fogg will open our new Arts Series. Please join us at 3:00 in the sanctuary for a mostly sunny program of works by Poulenc, Mozart, Mendelssohn, Chopin, and Bolcom. The concert is free and open to the public. Suggested ticket donation is $10 for adults and $5 for students aged 6 through college.

Wednesday: Drama and the Work of the People of God

In our Adult Learning program at 6:15 p.m. next Wednesday, October 23, Dottie Havlik will wrap up a series that explores ways to reach people with the message of Jesus Christ through drama. We may hold a performance or do readings. Please come and help us work out what "the work of the people" as liturgical drama might become at FPC.

Come early and enjoy fellowship at 5:30 over a dinner of mac and cheese with ham. Sixth- through twelfth-graders will head upstairs to the Youth Wing for Student Ministries small-group discussions at 6:00, and Wednesday Night Kids will gather at the hall door when they see the Kid's Time sign, also around 6:00.

Wednesday Night Kids

We will learn that God is immutable. In James 1:17 we read, "Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows." We will hear about David and his son Absalom, experiment with goop, and perhaps try an experiment or two with balloons. Come join us as we learn more about David's life and another characteristic of the God he served.

Electronic Giving Now Available on FPC Website

We are pleased to announce that electronic giving to FPC is now possible through our website, www.fpcbristol.org. Our hope is that you will find this capability both a convenient way to make pledge payments or other donations and also a practical help in tracking your stewardship commitments. Note: You cannot make a pledge online; you do that in the usual way. But you can make online payments on your pledge.

What Is Electronic Giving?

The term electronic giving encompasses a wide range of secure, automatic payment methods that can be used to make regular church offerings and other contributions without writing checks, carrying cash, or preparing envelopes. Electronic giving works the same way as the automatic payment methods used by many people to make mortgage or utility payments and to receive payroll earnings or Social Security income.

Why Give Electronically?

It is convenient. You do not need to write checks or bring cash to church when you contribute automatically. Your contributions are transmitted electronically and deposited directly into the church bank account.

It keeps you on track with stewardship commitments. When you schedule automated offerings, you don't have the worry of falling behind on pledge payments.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. How do automatic contributions work?

A. You choose your payment method, start date, frequency, and contribution amount. Your donations will be processed and deposited in the church bank account on the date or dates you schedule.

Q. When will my contribution be processed?

A. Your contribution will be processed each month on the date(s) you authorize.

Q. What if I need to cancel or place my donation on a temporary hold?

A. You can edit, suspend, or cancel a scheduled transaction in your online giving account. Please notify the church business administrator, Betsy Galliher, if you encounter any problems.

Q. What can I use to show that I made a donation?

A. The itemized list of electronic transactions that appears on your bank or credit card statement can be used as proof of your donations. You can also view and print your online donation history (see below). FPC mails contribution reports in July and October as well as year-end Charitable Contributions Reports for tax purposes.

Q. How do I get started?

A. To get started, go to www.fpcbristol.org and click on the Online Giving button at the top right of the page. You will then see the first screen of Vanco's secure online giving service. You will first create an online profile (use the button in the lower right quadrant). This is a one-time task. Please review the information you enter, then be sure to save your profile. It will enable you to change or stop a recurring donation at any time, and it will allow you to view and print your online donation history.

After you have saved your profile, you will see the Online Donation screen. Follow the prompts to schedule your transactions. You will be asked for a payment method in the Account drop-down menu on the Donation Information screen. You will be able to choose from direct debit from your checking or savings account and payment by means of a credit or a debit card.

Put Your Stamp on Mission Work

The Presbyterian Women want your used stamps, except those featuring the US flag or the Liberty Bell. The PW participate in a program that transforms all other used stamps into thousands of dollars for mission work around the world. Please bring your used stamps (a bit of envelope is OK) to the church and put them in the special box outside the Fellowship Hall. Or you can give them to a PW member. Thank you!

First Presbyterian Care Shepherds Need You

The goal of FPC's Care Shepherd ministry is to show Christian love and care to those of our church family who are in need. Opportunities for volunteering include providing meals to those just home from the hospital, sending a card or making a phone call to someone in a special care facility, and providing comfort in other situations.

Volunteers serve one month at a time on a Care Shepherd team that coordinates the needs of the congregation for that month. We are humbly seeking volunteers to serve in October, November, December, and January.

For more information or to volunteer, please contact Lorri Looney at jeffandlorri@msn.com or 423-573-1676.

Fairmount Snack Program Goes Back to School

School is back in session, and that means it's time to perk up the hungry students in our neighborhood school who can't afford to buy snacks to see them through the afternoon. We are now collecting small pretzels. The small sticks and the small curved pretzels are best for fitting into snack-sized portions for our Fairmount Elementary kids. As before, please place your contributions in the little red schoolhouse in the Fellowship Hallway. Thank you!

Grass Is Growing but Not under Our Feet

Brian Miller (October 16-19) is the last sign-up on our 2013 mowing schedule, but the grass will need cutting at least through the end of the month. Don't leave it all up to Randy Cook. Contact him at 423-956-1541 or npolecook@aol.com to offer your help.

Hot Dog and Marshmallow Roast for Grades 3-5

Students in third through fifth grade are invited to a hot dog and marshmallow roast next Sunday, October 27, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. We will have a scavenger hunt, play games, and roast our hot dogs and marshmallows over a fire.

Students should be dropped off and picked up near the entrance to the Fellowship Hall at the back of the church. For more information, contact Ann Abel.

5th Quarter at Central Christian Church Friday

After the Tennessee High School home game this Friday, October 18, the FPC high school youth's 5th Quarter party will be held at Central Christian Church, located at 424 Melrose Street, Bristol, Tennessee.

Sunday Night Youth Series: Babel

What do a tower built in ancient times to reach the heavens and a cell phone have in common? A lot more than you may think. The people responsible for the tower of Babel used the technology of their day to elevate themselves, taking God out of the picture. We use the technology of our day in similar ways. The technology itself isn't bad or good, but how we choose to use it is important. The right kind of relationship with technology will help us to do the right kinds of things with it. Join us this Sunday as we begin a three-part series of discussions on this topic. Sixth- through twelfth-graders meet in the Youth Wing at 6:00 p.m.

Session Two, October 20: My Profile

Who are you? That's a good question. You can let everyone know who you think you are. You can upload pictures, list your likes and dislikes, and have people comment on your clever posts. But what if in the effort to manipulate your identity, you lose sight of who you really are? Who are you really? Who really has that say? Technology gives you the illusion that you do, but what if your real identity goes much deeper than what your latest status or profile says of you? Technology does not have the final word on who you are. So who does? Let's talk! Matt Chambers will be our guest speaker this Sunday.

Music Notes

Sunday's music participants: Sanctuary Choir, Cherub Choir, Praise Team members.

Parents of Cherub Choir members, please note: While there will be no rehearsal Sunday morning, the Cherub Choir will sing for our service of combined worship at 10:30. They will need to come to the children's choir room promptly at 10:15 to robe. Parental help with robing and sitting with the children is always needed and greatly appreciated!

Sunday's music: The opening song, "I Will Call Upon the Lord" by Michael O'Shields (b. 1948), sets Psalm 18:3,46 in a call and response form. Our second song, "Great Are You, Lord," by Michael W. Smith (b. 1957) and his wife Deborah D. Smith (b. 1958), although not based on a specific psalm, uses language of adoration common to the Psalms.

The response we will sing as part of the Prayer of Confession was written by an Arab Christian living in Jerusalem, and the "Alleluia" following the Assurance of Pardon was composed in a Celtic style by Fintan O'Carroll (1922-1981).

The Cherub Choir anthem, "I Belong to God" by Marie Pooler (b. 1928), encourages us to use all of our abilities to praise and serve God. The hymn after the sermon, "We Give Thee but Thine Own," with words by W. W. How (1823-1897) and music attributed to Robert Schumann (1810-1856), is about much more than our financial stewardship: our relationship to God and others. The Sanctuary Choir offertory is a musical setting by Carl Schalk (b. 1929) of a hymn text of Jaroslav Vajda (1919-2008). "All Things Are Yours, My God" considers the gifts we receive from each of the three persons of the Trinity and how all we have and all we are belong to God.

Our closing song, "God, We Honor You" by Mennonite musician James Clemens (b. 1966), is both praise of and prayer to God. As we leave, we will sing "We Will Walk with God," a song of sending from Swaziland translated and arranged by Scottish clergyman and musician John Bell (b. 1949).

Morningstar Flute Ensemble: If you attended the 11:00 worship service on July 21, you will remember the beautiful flute music by the Morningstar Flute Ensemble. They offered their services in return for use of the sanctuary for recording. The fruit of that recording, the CD Tranquility, is now available. The title is taken from a composition of the same name written for the ensemble by Ann Holler and included on the CD. If you would like a CD, contact the Feys.
