Combined Service on October 20, Stewardship Sunday

October 20 is Stewardship Sunday, when our early and late congregations worship together as we dedicate our stewardship pledges. The combined service will take place at 10:30 a.m., in lieu of the usual, separate 8:30 and 11:00 services. There will be no Cherub Choir rehearsal that day, and Sunday School will begin at 9:30, 15 minutes earlier than usual. Please plan to join us for this important event in our life together.

Pledges in the Morning, Music in the Afternoon

Ryan Fogg

On the afternoon of October 20, pianist Ryan Fogg will open our new Arts Series. Please join us at 3:00 in the sanctuary for a program of works by composers Poulenc, Mozart, Mendelssohn, Chopin, and Bolcom. The concert is free and open to the public. Suggested ticket donation is $10 for adults and $5 for students aged 6 through college.

It's not too late to mark your calendars for the great series of programs lined up for this year! Coming to our sanctuary February 9 will be students from one of the most vital organ studios in our region. They will be followed March 2 by a veteran of the United States Air Force Band, trumpeter SMSgt USAF (ret.) Clarence Mitchell II, in performance with Dr. David Champouillon and the Pro Musica Chamber Ensemble. Our final concert, April 6, will showcase flutist Mindy Rosenfeld and lutanist Ronn McFarlane of the Baltimore Consort.

Donations are still being received for the Arts Series. If you choose to donate, please make your check out to the church and write "Arts Series" in the memo line so that it can be properly credited.

Donations received will be acknowledged with series tickets at the following levels:

                $500                     4 season tickets

                $250-$499          3 season tickets

                $100-$249          2 season tickets

                $50-$99               1 season ticket

Wednesday Night: Spreading the Word through Drama

In our Adult Learning program at 6:15 p.m. next Wednesday, October 16, Dottie Havlik will continue a series that explores ways to reach people with the message of Jesus Christ through drama. Come and tell us what you would like to see in the way of liturgical drama here or elsewhere.

At 5:30 enjoy fellowship over breakfast for dinner. Sixth- through twelfth-graders will head upstairs to the Youth Wing for Student Ministries small-group discussions at 6:00, and Wednesday Night Kids will gather at the hall door when they see the Kid's Time sign, also around 6:00.

Wednesday Night Kids

Clean pennies, leaking bottles, and popping balloons will help us learn that our God is holy. The Bible often refers to holiness and lets us know that God is completely pure and therefore totally separated from evil. Our story of King David continues as he dances when bringing the Ark of the Covenant back to Jerusalem. What was in the Ark of the Covenant and what did David's wife think of his dancing? Join us as we learn together of God working out his plan for his people through David, the king.

Put Your Stamp on Mission Work

The Presbyterian Women want your used stamps, except those featuring the US flag or the Liberty Bell. The PW participate in a program that transforms all other used stamps into thousands of dollars for mission work around the world. Please bring your used stamps (a bit of envelope is OK) to the church and put them in the special box outside the Fellowship Hall. Or you can give them to a PW member. Thank you!

First Presbyterian Care Shepherds Need You

The goal of FPC's Care Shepherd ministry is to show Christian love and care to those of our church family who are in need. Opportunities for volunteering include providing meals to those just home from the hospital, sending a card or making a phone call to someone in a special care facility, and providing comfort in other situations.

Volunteers serve one month at a time on a Care Shepherd team that coordinates the needs of the congregation for that month. We are humbly seeking volunteers to serve in October, November, December, and January.

For more information or to volunteer, please contact Lorri Looney at jeffandlorri@msn.com or 423-573-1676.

Fairmount Snack Program Goes Back to School

School is back in session, and that means it's time to perk up the hungry students in our neighborhood school who can't afford to buy snacks to see them through the afternoon. We are now collecting small pretzels. The small sticks and the small curved pretzels are best for fitting into snack-sized portions for our Fairmount Elementary kids. As before, please place your contributions in the little red schoolhouse in the Fellowship Hallway. Thank you!

Last Mowers Riding

We've had some cool weather, but the grass is not discouraged. Dan Gross (October 9-12) and Brian Miller (October 16-19) will curb its enthusiasm through midmonth. Theirs are the last names on the 2013 mowing schedule, but we well may need to mow in November. Don't leave it all up to Randy Cook. Contact him at 423-956-1541 or npolecook@aol.com to offer your help.

Middle School Mania Tonight!

Tonight, October 10, FPC sixth- to eighth-graders will enjoy a night of corn maze fun at Cleek Farm in Kingsport. Students can navigate five acres of corn maze, enjoy a hayride around the farm, bounce on a giant jumping pillow, and more. We will meet in the FPC parking lot at 6:00 p.m. and return to the church around 10:30 p.m. Bring friends and dress warmly! If you haven't already signed up, the cost of the evening is $15. Sign up by turning in your money to Katie Arnold.

Soon: SuperStart Southeastern Sixth-Grade Session

FPC 6th-graders will head to Atlanta November 1-3 to enjoy a band, outrageous skits, dynamic speakers, and fellowship with other 6th-graders from all over the Southeast at SuperStart 2013. On top of that, we will spend an afternoon at Stone Mountain Park.

The cost of the trip is $125, which includes SuperStart, transportation, lodging in an area hotel, food, and an adventure pass at Stone Mountain Park. Register by next Wednesday, October 16, by sending Katie Arnold or Amy Buck your payment and a notarized FPC release form (available on the FPC youth webpage).

New Sunday Youth Series: Babel

What do a tower built in ancient times to reach the heavens and a cell phone have in common? A lot more than you may think. The people responsible for the tower of Babel used the technology of their day to elevate themselves, taking God out of the picture. We use the technology of our day in similar ways. The technology itself isn't bad or good, but how we choose to use it is important. The right kind of relationship with technology will help us to do the right kinds of things with it. Join us this Sunday as we begin a three-part series of discussions on this topic. Sixth- through twelfth-graders meet in the Youth Wing at 6:00 p.m.

Session One, October 13: I <3 Technology

Many of us are in a serious relationship with technology. We love it, we need it, it's a big part of our lives. But others of us just aren't that into it. We don't need to text someone every minute. Some of us don't even have a Facebook page (gasp!). Either way, we can't escape the reality that technology is part of our lives. And that's not always a bad thing, because technology isn't evil. But what we do with it, how we use it, says a lot about our relationship with it.

Edwin Fissinger

Sunday's music: The anthem this week, "O Be Joyful in the Lord," is a setting by American composer Edwin Fissinger (1920-1990) of the 16th-century Coverdale translation of Psalm 100:1-2. Coverdale's translation of the Psalms was used in the Book of Common Prayer and has remained standard alongside the King James Version and later translations. This psalm not only calls on us to rejoice in God but also reminds us that God made us and that we belong solely to God. Fissinger spent most of his career at North Dakota State University but was known nationally as a composer, music editor, and choral conductor. His musical setting exemplifies both the joyous and the contemplative nature of the text.

Our middle hymn, "Ten Lepers Facing Constant Scorn," with a text by John Thornburg (b. 1954), retells, interprets, and asks us to apply the gospel lesson of the healing of the ten lepers. The words are set to a tune, by Thomas Pavlechko (b. 1962), composed initially for a text about John's description in Revelation of the new Jerusalem, thus its name, RADIANT CITY.

Arts Series: Coming soon! Dr. Ryan Fogg, Associate Professor of Music and Director of Keyboard Studies at Carson-Newman University, will play a varied program of piano music in our sanctuary on Sunday, October 20, at 3:00 p.m. Suggested ticket donation is $10 adults/$5 students aged 6 through college.

Hymnal update: The new hymnals have arrived! They will remain in their boxes until our dedication service, which will take place in a combined service of worship on Christ the King Sunday, November 24. Secretary Jane Prater is working on the bookplates, which will be placed in the hymnals prior to their dedication. If you would like to give one or more hymnals in honor or memory of someone, monies are still being received. You can pick up a form on the literature rack across from the office.
