Heart to Heart Fall Gathering Tonight at FPC

Choose life, that you and your offspring may live, loving the Lord your God, obeying his voice, and holding fast to him, for he is your life and length of days. - Deuteronomy 30:19-20

Heart to Heart, a women's ministry of First Presbyterian Church, invites the women of the church and their friends to join us tonight, Thursday, October 3, from 5:30 to 7:30 at FPC for dinner followed by a program that considers how women can encourage one another to choose the abundant life to which God calls us.

Jackie Burt, a physician and a member of FPC, and Linda Stollings, a certified personal trainer and wellness coach, will lead us in an evening that explores the physical and spiritual dimensions of wellness as they affect women throughout their life. Join us for great information about physical health, nutrition, and fitness and how all three relate to God's instruction that we must "choose life."

John's gospel tells us that Jesus comes that we might "have life and have it abundantly." Do you need prodding to help you choose this abundant life? Join us as we spur one another on in this quest for life that is truly life.

Invite a friend and let us know that you can join us by emailing Jane Prater at jprater@fpcbristol.org or calling the church office at 423-764-7176. You can also respond on our Heart to Heart Facebook page. We will happily provide child care; just let us know how many children to expect! See you tonight!

Two Sundays of Special Note in October

October is here, bringing us the ever-fresh worship opportunities that we look forward to from year to year. We will hear and sing music from around the world this week on World Communion Sunday, October 6. Two weeks later, on October 20, our early and late congregations will worship together as we dedicate our stewardship pledges in a single combined service on Stewardship Sunday.

The single service on October 20 will be held at 10:30 a.m. and take the place of the regular 8:30 and 11:00 services. There will be no Cherub Choir rehearsal, and Sunday School will begin earlier than usual, at 9:30.

Pianist Ryan Fogg to Open Arts Series Oct. 20

Ryan Fogg

The first event of FPC's 2013-2014 Arts Series will take place Sunday, October 20, at 3:00 p.m. in our sanctuary and will feature Carson-Newman professor Ryan Fogg on the piano. Ryan will play a variety of piano literature, including works by composers Poulenc, Mozart, Mendelssohn, Chopin, and Bolcom. The concert is free and open to the public. Suggested ticket donation is $10 for adults and $5 for students aged 6 through college.

It's not too late to mark your calendars for the great series of programs lined up for this year! Coming to our sanctuary February 9 will be students from one of the most vital organ studios in our region. They will be followed March 2 by a veteran of the United States Air Force Band, trumpeter SMSgt USAF (ret.) Clarence Mitchell II, in performance with Dr. David Champouillon and the Pro Musica Chamber Ensemble. Our final concert, April 6, will showcase flutist Mindy Rosenfeld and lutenist Ronn McFarlane of the Baltimore Consort.

Donations are still being received for the Arts Series. If you choose to donate, please make your check out to the church and write "Arts Series" in the memo line so that it can be properly credited.

Donations received will be acknowledged with series tickets at the following levels:

                $500                     4 season tickets

                $250-$499          3 season tickets

                $100-$249          2 season tickets

                $50-$99               1 season ticket

Presbyterian Women Meet Tuesday

Presbyterian Women will meet Tuesday morning, October 8. We will have circle at 11:00, then Gordon Turnbull will lead our Bible study at 11:30. We will have lunch together in the parlor afterward. Please make your lunch reservations with the church office. Remember to bring small pretzels for the Fairmount children as well as any cancelled stamps you may have.

No Wednesday Night Programs October 9

Our usual Wednesday evening fellowship dinner and programs for October 9 have been suspended to accommodate the schools' fall break. These events will resume the following Wednesday, October 16, with Dottie Havlik's drama series.

Put Your Stamp on Mission Work!

The Presbyterian Women want your used stamps, except those featuring the flag or the liberty bell. The PW participate in a program that transforms all other used stamps into thousands of dollars for mission work around the world. Please bring your used stamps (a bit of envelope is OK) to the church and put them in the special box outside the Fellowship Hall. Or you can give them to a PW member. Thank you!

First Presbyterian Care Shepherds Need You!

The goal of FPC's Care Shepherd ministry is to show Christian love and care to those of our church family who are in need. Opportunities for volunteering include providing meals to those just home from the hospital, sending a card or making a phone call to someone in a special care facility, and providing comfort in other situations.

Volunteers serve one month at a time on a Care Shepherd team that coordinates the needs of the congregation for that month. We are humbly seeking volunteers to serve in October, November, December, and January.

For more information or to volunteer, please contact Lorri Looney at jeffandlorri@msn.com or 423-573-1676.

Fairmount Snack Program Goes Back to School

School is back in session, and that means it's time to perk up the hungry students in our neighborhood school who can't afford to buy snacks to see them through the afternoon. We are now collecting small pretzels. The small sticks and the small curved pretzels are best for fitting into snack-sized portions for our Fairmount Elementary kids. As before, please place your contributions in the little red schoolhouse in the Fellowship Hallway. Thank you!

Sunday Night Youth: Hook and Jab

This week on October 6 the Sunday Night Youth Fellowship will take up the final segment of The Battle Within. We have been taking a good look at the temptations Jesus faced in the desert and identifying the driving forces behind those we all face every day. Once we realize what the pull is, we can find the confidence to follow Jesus' example and respond as he did.

October 6: Hook and Jab

Bottom Line: We are tempted to pursue the right thing the wrong way.

Temptation isn't always about doing something bad. In fact, sometimes the end result is not necessarily a bad thing, but the way we plan to get there--the shortcut we take, the compromise we make-is. In this struggle with temptation, sometimes the punches we throw and the punches thrown at us are simply about pursuing the right things in the wrong way. Come join us for the final match of the series. Sixth- through twelfth-graders meet in the Youth Wing at 6:00 p.m.

5th Quarter: Lock-In at the Farm!

On October 4, all FPC 9th- to 12th-graders are invited to White Fork Ranch after the Tennessee High School football game for an all-night 5th Quarter party. We'll enjoy farm games, a bonfire, a hayride, and much more entertainment throughout the night, and it won't end until 8:00 Saturday morning!

Transportation can be provided from THS to White Fork Ranch for those who need it. Please make those arrangements with Katie Arnold. Students will not be permitted to leave White Fork Ranch until 8:00 a.m. Saturday, unless a parent picks them up or arrangements are worked out ahead of time.

All participants must turn in an FPC notarized release form if one is not already on file with the church. Forms can be found at www.fpcbristol.org/growing/youth.

Invite friends, bring sleeping bags if you want to sleep, and dress for the farm!

Middle School Mania: Get Lost in the Maze

On October 10, FPC 6th- to 8th-graders will enjoy a night of corn maze fun at Cleek Farm in Kingsport. Students can navigate five acres of corn maze, enjoy a hayride around the farm, bounce on a giant jumping pillow, and more. The cost of the evening is $10, if you sign up by October 6, and $15 after that date. We will meet in the FPC parking lot at 6:00 p.m. and plan to return to the church around 10:30 p.m. Sign up by turning in your money to Katie Arnold. Bring friends and dress warmly!

SuperStart Southeastern Sixth-Grade Retreat

FPC 6th-graders will head to Atlanta November 1-3 to enjoy a band, outrageous skits, dynamic speakers, and fellowship with other 6th-graders from all over the Southeast at SuperStart 2013. On top of that, we will spend an afternoon at Stone Mountain Park.

The cost of the trip is $125, which includes SuperStart, transportation, lodging in an area hotel, food, and an adventure pass at Stone Mountain Park. Register by October 16 by sending Katie Arnold or Amy Buck your payment and a notarized FPC release form.

Before the Leaves Fall

Making sure that our campus adds to rather than detracts from the beauty of the season, David Moore (October 2-5) and Dan Gross (October 9-12) will keep our church lawns in trim through the first two weeks of the month. If the weather continues to encourage the grass, we could be mowing into November. Contact Randy Cook at 423-956-1541 or npolecook@aol.com to find out how you can help.

Music Notes

Sunday's music participants: Sanctuary Choir; Jubilate Youth Choir (both services); Savior's Singers Children's Choir; Brandon Story, bass; Mariel Story, guitar.

Sunday's music: As is our tradition, the music for World Communion Sunday is representative of the global church. The Jubilate Youth Choir will sing "Tunaomba Mungu Atawale," an African song with a Swahili text praising the Trinity. The Savior's Singers Children's Choir will sing "Bwana Asifiwe," a song of praise combining an African song with the hymn "Praise to the Lord, the Almighty." The Sanctuary Choir will open the service with a processional song from Cameroon. They will also sing "Resucitó," a song rejoicing in the resurrection of Christ, with text and music by Spanish composer Francisco Argüello (b. 1939). He is most noted for his work with the Christian formation of Roman Catholic adults and for his visual artworks, but he also has composed a sizeable body of music for use in worship.

Fred Kaan

Among the congregational songs will be "Come into God's Presence," an anonymously created chorus from the 1960s, a response to the Prayer of Confession composed by an Arab Christian composer working in Jerusalem, a new communion hymn with text by Herman Stuempfle (1923-2007) set to an early American folk hymn tune, a traditional Argentinean setting of "Holy, Holy, Holy" for the communion service, the beloved hymn "In Christ There is No East or West" to a tune from the African-American tradition, and a stanza of the hymn "Let Us Talents and Tongues Employ," with a text by Dutch-English hymn writer Fred Kaan (1929-2009) set to a Jamaican folksong melody.

Program of Note: A "Saint Francis Benefit Concert" will be held this Friday, October 4, at 7:00 p.m. in the sanctuary of Emmanuel Episcopal Church, downtown. This concert will feature local musicians performing pieces depicting animals and nature. The concert is free, but all donations raised will be given to the Holly Help Fund. A reception will follow the concert.
