Sharing Christ This Saturday

FPC has responsibility to feed the poor at the Sharing Christ Ministry in downtown Bristol this Saturday, September 7. We still need volunteers to prepare and serve chicken casseroles, marinated slaw, green beans, and dinner rolls. We also need donations of sandwich bread, peanut butter, jam, snack cakes, and fruit for bag lunches, and volunteers to make the sandwiches and fill the bags. We estimate that we will need at least 150 dinners and 75 bag lunches. To volunteer and/or donate food, please contact Tammy Connolly at lconn4691@btes.tv. Thank you!

Presbyterian Women Meet Tuesday

Presbyterian Women will resume our monthly meetings Tuesday, September 10, at 11:00 a.m. All women of the church are invited to join us as we gather first for circle, then for a Bible study led by Gordon Turnbull at 11:30. We have lunch together at noon in the parlor. Be sure to make your lunch reservations with the church office. We look forward to seeing you!

Young Adult Gathering at Turnbulls' Next Thursday

Come one, come all! College students and childless young adults are invited to an end-of-summer cookout next Thursday, September 12, at 6:30 p.m. We will gather at Betsy and Gordon Turnbull's home, 25 Compton, in the Middlebrook subdivision. Please let Dave Welch (dwelch@fpcbristol.org) or Betsy (etturnbull83@gmail.com) know whether you plan to attend. Besides great food, we want to celebrate all that you are doing, and possibly plan future activities, outings, and events. Questions? Contact Dave. See you Thursday!

Join Us for Family Fun at FPC Sept. 14

ice cream

We will have an Ice Cream Social and Movie Night, Saturday, September 14, at 7:00 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. Please bring either store-bought or homemade ice cream with you; we'll have a taste contest for homemade. We will announce the movie title in the next newsletter. Stay tuned!

It's Happening at FPC Wednesday Night

At 6:15 on Wednesday evenings in September, join the Rev. Elizabeth Patrick for a look at the book of Jonah. We'll enjoy its humor and consider whether we all might be a little like the runaway prophet.

At our next Fellowship Dinner, September 11 at 5:30 p.m., we will feast on Mexican tacos and burritos. Please join us in the Fellowship Hall and stay for the age-appropriate learning programs. Adults remain in the Fellowship Hall for the Adult Learning program, sixth- through twelfth-graders head upstairs to the Youth Wing for Student Ministries small-group discussions at 6:00, and Wednesday Night Kids gather at the door to the hall when they see the Kid's Time sign, also around 6:00.

Wednesday Night Kids

Balloons, M&Ms, and towers of all kinds of material will help us learn about our sovereign God, the one who has control over the entire universe. When we realize that God is in control, it frees us to trust him and the fact that he has the right to plan our lives. We learn more about a sovereign God as we hear about David hiding from an angry King Saul. Remembering that God has already decided that David will be king, we see how God uses people to work out his plan. Join us as we continue to experiment and learn together about the many attributes of God.

Sunday Evening Student Fellowship Postponed

There will be no Student Fellowship this Sunday, September 8, because of the Fall Youth Retreat this weekend. We will meet again September 15.

Packing Info for Fall Youth Retreat

All FPC Fall Youth Retreat attendees can find departure information and the packing list on the church website, here: Student Fellowship Activities. Questions? Please contact Katie Arnold at karnold@fpcbristol.org.

Women's Bible Study News

Jackie Burt's HeartsBurn small group Bible study will commence their fall study with a soup and salad luncheon on Tuesday, September 10. They invite you to join them in pursuing God through the study of scripture and other materials. This fall the group will explore an invitation to the Christian spiritual life through reading and discussing Soul Feast by Marjorie J. Thompson. Weekly meetings are Tuesdays at 1:00 p.m. at Jackie's home. Those able to arrive a bit early are welcomed with fellowship, coffee and tea, and sometimes treats. For more information, contact Jackie at 423-646-7405 or jburt@chartertn.net.

Betsy Turnbull's Heart to Heart Bible study resumed for the fall September 3 and began an inductive study of John's gospel. Although this group will usually meet on the first and third Tuesday of each month, the second meeting this month has been rescheduled to September 10. All meetings will be at 7:00 p.m. in room 123 of the church. Whenever you join us, feel free to invite a friend!

Lorri Looney's Wednesday Morning Heart to Heart DVD Bible Study resumed September 4 and began a course of twelve lessons through December 4, Twelve Women of the Bible: Life-Changing Stories for Women Today, by Lysa TerKeurst and others. This group meets weekly from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. in the church parlor.

Lynette Wallen's Heart to Heart group resumed weekly gatherings August 14. The group has begun an inductive study of the book of John and will continue meeting weekly until early December. They meet in the New Mothers' room from 9:30 to 11:00 on Wednesday mornings. Child care is available. New members are always welcome. Please feel free to join us any week!

Mowers through Mid-September

This week, Karen White-Smith and Eric Cline, on mower duty September 4-7, are catching a break in the weather. We hope it stays fine for Roger Sikorski, who takes over September 11-14. We'll be mowing well into October, so it's not too late to join the FPC mowing team. Just contact Randy Cook at 423-956-1541 or npolecook@aol.com.

Music Notes

Sunday's music participants: Sanctuary Choir; George Huber, soloist.

Felix Mendelssohn

Sunday's music: For Sunday's special music, the Sanctuary Choir and soloist George Huber will offer a solo and chorus pair of movements from the oratorio Elijah by Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847). Through solos and choruses, the oratorio, first performed in 1846 in Birmingham, England, tells of the works of God for God's people through the prophet Elijah. The solo, "Draw near, all ye people," is a monologue of Elijah calling on God to turn the people's hearts. The following chorus, "Cast Thy Burden Upon the Lord," is a meditation on the fact that, just as in the Lord's Prayer we ask God to "give us our daily bread," if we cast our burden upon the Lord, God will sustain us.

Arts Series: We kick off the 2013-2014 Arts Series Sunday, October 20, with a piano recital by Dr. Ryan Fogg, Associate Professor of Music and Director of Keyboard Studies at Carson-Newman University. Ryan will play works by Poulenc, Mozart, Mendelssohn, Chopin, and Bolcom. We appreciate your prayerful consideration of support for this part of the church's ministry through music. Donations received by September 30 will help us plan the work of the Arts Series more accurately, but we are happy to receive any donation at any time. If you choose to donate, please make your check out to the church and write "Arts Series" in the memo line so that it can be properly credited.

Calling all ringers: If you would like to participate in the Sanctuary Bell Choir, the first rehearsal will take place Monday, September 9, at 5:30 p.m. It helps if you can read music, but anyone can learn to ring. If you would like a brief private lesson to see whether you would be interested, contact the Feys.
