FPC to Receive New Members Sunday

PCUSA seal smallThis Sunday, August 25, at 10:20 a.m., the Session will meet in the chapel with those interested in joining FPC. Everyone who wishes to become a member of our congregation is invited to attend.

What's Happening Here Wednesday Night

Please join us next Wednesday, August 28, at 5:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall, when our Fellowship Dinner will feature both traditional and vegetarian lasagna. The Adult Learning program, a Bible study on missions, will follow at 6:15. Student Ministries small-group discussions will begin at 6:00 in the Youth Wing, and Wednesday Night Kids will gather at the door to the hall when they see the big Kid's Time sign, also around 6:00.

Wednesday Night Kids

A bag of wind, a floating Ping-Pong ball, and dancing raisins all combine to demonstrate our omnipotent God. Come join us Wednesday evening to learn more about our all-powerful God. While God can do whatever he pleases, he will never do anything out of character. Because God is all-powerful, we, like David against Goliath, can trust him to help us. We can know that he will always have the ability to do what he has promised to do. Parents: look for the neon green take-home papers that will help you support our Wednesday Night learning.

Next Sharing Christ Service Opportunity Will Be Sept. 7

Our next opportunity for service at Sharing Christ Ministry in downtown Bristol will be Saturday, September 7. We need volunteers to prepare and serve chicken casseroles, marinated slaw, green beans, and dinner rolls. We also need donations of sandwich bread, peanut butter, jam, snack cakes, and fruit for bag lunches, and volunteers to make the sandwiches and fill the bags. We estimate that we will need at least 150 dinners and 75 bag lunches. To volunteer and/or donate food, please contact Tammy Connolly at lconn4691@btes.tv.

Officer Nominating Committee Seeks Suggestions

This year's Officer Nominating Committee will soon begin its work to discern a slate of officers to present for election in the coming year. Because a vital component in this process is direct input from the congregation, the committee requests your suggestions as to who would serve best as elders, deacons, or trustee. Suggestion forms are available at the church, or you can contact a member of the committee: Lee Galliher, Karen Vann, Lorri Looney, Emily Hyder, or Debbie McMillin. Please offer your suggestions as soon as possible. Thank you!

Oh, Boy! It's Girls' Night Out!

h2h logo - newThe women of FPC and their friends will share another Heart to Heart Girls' Night Out Tuesday, August 27, congregating at Machiavelli's at 6:00 p.m. Child care will be available at the church at 5:30. Please contact Jane Prater in the church office at 423-764-7176 or jprater@fpcbristol.org by noon Monday, August 26, to let her know how many children will need care. Please pack a supper for your children. Pick-up time will be 8:15 p.m.

We Have a Women's Bible Study for You!

Betsy Turnbull's Heart to Heart Bible study will study John's gospel this fall, beginning Tuesday, September 3, at 7:00 p.m. This group will continue to meet at the church on the first and third Tuesday of each month. Feel free to invite a friend!

Lorri Looney's Wednesday Morning Heart to Heart DVD Bible Study will start back September 4 and cover twelve lessons through December 4 on Twelve Women of the Bible: Life-Changing Stories for Women Today, by Lysa TerKeurst and others. A study guide will be available at the first session for $11. This group meets weekly from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. in the church parlor.

Jackie Burt's HeartsBurn small group Bible study will commence their fall study with a soup and salad luncheon on Tuesday, September 10. They invite you to join them in pursuing God through the study of scripture and other materials. This fall the group will explore an invitation to the Christian spiritual life through reading and discussing Soul Feast by Marjorie J. Thompson. Weekly meetings are Tuesdays at 1:00 p.m. at Jackie's home. Those able to arrive a bit early are welcomed with fellowship, coffee and tea, and sometimes treats. For more information, contact Jackie at 423-646-7405 or jburt@chartertn.net.

Lynette Wallen's Heart to Heart group resumed weekly gatherings August 14. The group has begun an inductive study of the book of John and will continue meeting weekly until early December. They meet in the New Mothers' room from 9:30 to 11:00 on Wednesday mornings. Child care is available. New members are always welcome. Please feel free to join us any week!

Boys & Girls Club Outreach Needs Volunteers

Last year, our church began an outreach to the children who attend the Boys & Girls Club afterschool program that meets at our church. We were welcomed with excitement from the children and loads of support from the B&G Club staff. This year, we will begin mid-September, and we need two activity leaders and five shepherds. We hope you will prayerfully consider joining this outreach program that enriches both children and adults.

Activity leaders present the lesson and plan a simple craft or game to emphasize the lesson's main points. Activities are about Jesus and God's saving love for all of us. Each lesson and fun activity lasts from 15 to 45 minutes, depending on the plans for the day.

Shepherds are helpers that sit by the children during the activity, hand out materials, and generally help individual children during the lesson. In addition to the activity leader and the B&G Club staff, we like to have at least one shepherd with each group.

The program begins around 4:30 on six fall and six spring afternoons. The activity leaders and shepherds choose the days that are most convenient for them. If you would like more information about becoming an activity leader or a shepherd, please contact Peggy Hill at peggyhill145@gmail.com or 423-956-0209.

FPC Arts Series Programs for 2013-2014

We are pleased to announce the new season of our FPC Art Series. This year we explore the broader world of the arts, presenting programs and workshops on the visual arts and liturgical dance in addition to fine concerts. We have lined up a variety of local and national talent accessible to all ages.

All four programs are scheduled for Sunday afternoons at 3:00:

Ryan Fogg

October 20: Dr. Ryan Fogg, piano. Ryan is Associate Professor of Music and Director of Keyboard Studies at Carson-Newman University. Included on this program will be works by Poulenc, Mozart, Mendelssohn, Chopin, and Bolcom.

February 9: Students from the organ studio of Joby Bell, Appalachian State University, one of the most vital organ studios in our region.

March 2: Guest trumpeter SMSgt USAF (ret.) Clarence Mitchell II, with Dr. David Champouillon and the Pro Musica Chamber Ensemble. Mr. Mitchell retired from the United States Air Force Band after 28 years of service, still actively performing. This is the S.C. and Lillian Wolfe memorial concert.

April 6: Mindy Rosenfeld, flute, and Ronn McFarlane, lute. These two talented musicians are part of the famed Baltimore Consort, whose members performed in our series in 2004.

It is the ongoing goal of the Arts Series to enrich and inspire the life and worship of the people of Bristol and the members of FPC, share our unique and marvelous facilities, and encourage the artistically gifted of our region and beyond. We greatly appreciate your prayerful consideration of support for this part of the ministry of FPC. Donations received by September 30 will help us plan the work of the Arts Series more accurately, but we are happy to receive any donation at any time. If you choose to donate, please make your check out to the church and write "Arts Series" in the memo line so that it can be properly credited.

Donations received will be acknowledged with series tickets at the following levels:

                $500                      4 season tickets

                $250-$499           3 season tickets

                $100-$249           2 season tickets

                $50-$99                1 season ticket

Former Interim Pastor Conrad Crow Celebrates Anniversary

Conrad Crow, who served FPC as an interim pastor 1998-99, will soon celebrate his 60th wedding anniversary, and you are invited! The Crows are active participants of Jonesborough Presbyterian Church, where a reception will be held this Sunday, August 25, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Their family asks you to join them. No gifts, just your presence is requested.

On August 22, 1953, Conrad and Carolyn Crow were united in marriage by Dr. John Leith, pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Auburn, Alabama, where they met as students. Their life together has been blessed with three children and four grandchildren. Their sons, Marshall and Charles, live in Chesapeake and Parkersburg, West Virginia, while their daughter, Terri Knight, and her family reside in Jonesborough.

Dr. Crow, an ordained minister of the Presbyterian Church USA, served pastorates in Kentucky, West Virginia, and Virginia before retiring in 1994. After moving to this area, he served interim pastorates in Kingsport, Bristol, Johnson City, Elizabethton, and Jonesborough.

First 5th Quarter of Fall Is Tonight!

All high school students are invited to 5th Quarter after Tennessee High School home football games this fall. The first 5th Quarter is tonight, August 22! All 5th Quarters will be held at the Arnolds' home, 1308 Hillside Avenue, Bristol, Tennessee. The remaining 5th Quarter dates are September 27, October 4 & 18, and November 1.

Students are welcome to bring friends and enjoy fellowship around a bonfire with s'mores and games. Parents are asked to assist with supplying snacks and drinks. All drivers are asked to be courteous to neighbors as they park in the neighborhood.

Fall Youth Retreat Coming Up in Two Weeks

Thirty-three 7th0inh grade students have registered to spend a weekend in the mountains enjoying fellowship and adventure September 6-8. They will retreat to Snowbird Wilderness Outfitters in Andrews, North Carolina, to enjoy whitewater rafting, paintball, mountain biking, skeet shooting, high ropes courses, and more. Mornings and evenings will be spent with other youth groups in worship, discussion, and games.

The cost of the trip is $140. Space is limited, so register today with Katie Arnold, Director of Youth Ministries. Please note: transportation will be arranged for athletes who have late practice on Friday, September 6.

Youth to Face the Battle Within

Each one of us faces a battle within. It may go unseen by those around us, but inside there is a major brawl. The battle is with temptation. And depending on the temptation and its hold on our life, it may be a battle that seems impossible to win. In this series, Andy Stanley takes a look at the temptations Jesus faced in the desert, and identifies the driving forces behind the temptations we all face every day. Once we realize what the pull is behind the temptation, we can find the confidence to follow Jesus' example and respond as he did.

In the coming weeks, the Sunday Night Student Fellowship will take on these topics: The Main Event (this Sunday, August 25), In This Corner (September 15), Fixing the Fight (September 22), and Hook and Jab (October 6). Sixth- through twelfth-graders meet in the Youth Wing at 6:00 p.m.

Week One: The Main Event (August 25)

Bottom Line: In every single temptation we face, there is always more at risk than we think.

In the sport of boxing, the main event is the big fight, the moment when everything is on the line. But most of us are oblivious to the truth that there's also a lot at stake in every temptation we face. When we are face to face with temptation, the choice can feel insignificant. There are times when it feels like no one will notice, or it's not really a big deal. But in looking at the temptations Jesus faced, we realize just how much is at stake-not only in his life, with the temptations that were before him-but in our lives as well, with the temptations we face every day.

Mowers through the End of August

Skimming over the church lawns, JB Madison (August 21-24) and Mark Mervis (August 28-31) will keep our grounds trim through the end of the month. To join the FPC mowing team, contact Randy Cook at 423-956-1541 or npolecook@aol.com.

Music Notes

Sunday's music participants: Sanctuary Choir.

Sarah Flower Adams

Sunday's music: The anthem is an arrangement of the hymn "Nearer, My God, To Thee." The text was written in 1841 by Sarah F. Adams (1805-1848) and is inspired by the story of Jacob's dream at Bethel, where he witnessed angels ascending and descending and came "near to God." As God's will is done, we too draw closer to God. The melody used in this arrangement was composed for these words by John B. Dykes (1823-1876) and is commonly paired with them when it is sung in the United Kingdom. This arrangement is by Charles Walker (b. 1949) of Columbus, Georgia. As a side note, it is the tradition that, as the Titanic was sinking, this hymn was played by the musicians. If it is a true story, the tune used in this arrangement is the one they would have played rather than the tune more commonly used in this country.

Choirs begin: All the choirs have made a great start to the program year! (Sanctuary Bells will begin Monday, September 9.) The older children's choir and youth choir, along with the adults, are preparing music for World Communion Sunday, and children and youth have already started working on Christmas music! If you would like to be part of the music ministry of the church, or if you would like for your children to take part, come to a rehearsal, or talk to the Feys.
