Rally Round Sunday School August 4

It's time to celebrate the incredible Christian Education at FPC! All classes--children, youth, and adult --are invited to join us during the Sunday School hour on August 4 at 9:45 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall. Enjoy a continental breakfast, entertainment that includes a play written just for Rally Day and participants of all ages, news about what's happening for the next school year, information for students moving up to a new class, and news about all the adult Sunday School classes. This celebration will take the place of Sunday School. All classes are asked to join in the fun!

Come to the Church Picnic!

We will bring summer to a festive close at our annual church picnic on Sunday, August 11, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. We'll gather at the Rotary Shelter in Steele Creek Park to play some games and enjoy the opportunity for casual conversation in a relaxing atmosphere.

FPC will provide meat and beverages, and supper will be served at 5:30. Please bring one of the following dishes with you, according to the initial of your last name:

A-H:      a side

  I-P:      a dessert

Q-Z:      a salad

We look forward to sharing fellowship, fun, and food with you!

Officer Nominating Committee Seeks Suggestions

PCUSA seal smallThis year's Officer Nominating Committee will soon begin its work to discern a slate of officers to present for election in the coming year. Because a vital component in this process is direct input from the congregation, the committee requests your suggestions as to who would serve best as elders, deacons, or trustee. Suggestion forms are available at the church, or you can contact a member of the committee: Lee Galliher, Karen Vann, Lorri Looney, Emily Hyder, or Debbie McMillin. Please offer your suggestions as soon as possible. Thank you!

Youth Groups to Welcome New Members

Sixth-graders will be welcomed to the middle school youth group July 30 during the Middle School FISH get-together. FISH meets from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.; the location will be announced.

Ninth-graders will be welcomed to the high school youth group August 1 during the High School FISH get-together at the church from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Students should bring a bathing suit and clothes that can get messy!

Hear Exciting Stories in Kids' Kirk

our safe church logoChildren ages 4 through first grade are invited to learn important lessons from two exciting stories in Kids' Kirk during both the 8:30 and 11:00 worship services for the next two Sundays.

This Sunday, July 21, we will learn about Jonah. Even though he did not immediately obey God, God loved Jonah. By sending a big fish to swallow him, God saved Jonah from drowning, and through the experience Jonah learned he could pray to God anywhere. We, too, are loved by God, and we, too, can talk to Him wherever we are.

On July 28 we will read the book Saul's Surprise on the Road to Damascus. Hearing God call his name, Saul experienced a dramatic change that led to his ministry as Paul, the writer and speaker who spread the good news to both Jews and Gentiles.

Morningstar Flute Ensemble

Sunday's guest musicians: You will want to note that the Morningstar Flute Ensemble will play for a few minutes before the service this Sunday, July 21. This ensemble recently recorded a new CD in our sanctuary and is offering their gift of music Sunday as an in-kind donation. Using five different members of the flute family (piccolo, C-flute, and alto, bass, and contrabass flutes), Morningstar Flute Ensemble has performed for several Arts Series programs in the Tri-Cities, at Emory & Henry College, Maryville College, the Paramount Center for the Arts, and in the historic Tiffany-decorated Willard Chapel in Auburn, NY. Founded by Charlotte Ellis of Blountville, Morningstar made a concert tour of Hungary in 2006.

Music for two Sundays: This Sunday, Morningstar Flute Ensemble will also play, for the offertory, a piece written by Ann Holler. Ann writes of her piece, "'Tranquility' began as a duo for flute and piano, with interplay between the two instruments as a key feature. At the request of a local flute instructor, [I] arranged this piece for flute ensemble, allowing musical conversations to occur between five instruments of the flute family. Even with some harmonic instability and a change from major to minor, the piece retains a peaceful mood." Choir members Nancy & Randy Cook will sing an arrangement of the familiar hymn "All Hail the Power of Jesus' Name," which uses two of the three tunes most commonly associated with this text. The text first appeared in the 18th century, and shortly afterward was altered and adapted; it has nonetheless remained a popular and much sung hymn since then. Its praise of the reign of Christ is unequalled. This musical arrangement is by Lloyd Larson (b. 1954), who has served as a musician for a number of congregations and is now a freelance musician in Minneapolis.

On July 28, choir member George Huber will sing "Bless this House." About this song, George writes, "two Englishwomen, poet Helen Taylor and composer May H. Brahe, published a new hymn in 1927 called 'Bless the House.' The great Irish tenor John McCormack heard the song and popularized it with a slightly altered title and lyrics, the form known today. The song on one level calls for God's blessing on a house or any other place of worship. But on a deeper level, the song is also a metaphor for us Christians to recognize our corporeal bodies as places of worship, calling down the Holy Spirit to dwell within us."

Program year begins soon: The Sanctuary Choir, after a five-week hiatus from the choir loft, will begin Wednesday night rehearsals August 7, at 7:15 p.m. in the choir room. New singers are always welcome! Watch this space for more rehearsal startup dates.
