Help Your Neighbors and Help Yourself

FPC members helped build porches and line basement walls for the Abingdon house in June.

Work off that mound of Fourth of July barbecue with Habitat for Humanity this Saturday, July 6. Volunteers will help with flooring and interior trim at 253 Leonard Street in Abingdon. The workday will begin at 8:00 a.m. and end by 4:00 p.m., but any time you can give will be gratefully received. Don't worry if you've never done this kind of work before--Habitat can use you!

You can help us finish the job this Saturday!

To volunteer or to find out more, call Pete Stigers at (276) 258-5469. Pete is Operations Director for Habitat's Washington County, Virginia, chapter.

Look! On the Horizon! It's the Church Picnic!

We will bring summer to a grand close at our annual church picnic, scheduled for Sunday, August 11, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m., at the Rotary Shelter in Steele Creek Park. We'll share details in the next newsletter. Meanwhile, be sure to mark your calendar!

Heart to Heart Cluster Bible Study July 13

All the women of FPC and their friends are warmly invited to the next Heart to Heart cluster Bible study, which will take place Saturday, July 13, from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m., at the church. Brunch will be served and child care will be provided. Anyone needing child care should call the church office by noon Thursday, July 11. For more information, contact Lensey Richardson.

Application Study of Gospel of John Begins

Chuck Thompson's Common Interests Sunday School class began an application study of the Gospel of John last Sunday, June 30. The study continues July 7 with chapter 2. The class plans to take up a new chapter every week. If you would like to join them, you will find them in the classroom at the end of the Scout Hall.

Kids' Kirk at Every Service Next Two Sundays

our safe church logoWe will hold Kids' Kirk at 8:30 and 11:00 on July 7 and 14. This Sunday, July 7, we will learn about brave Queen Esther, who risked her own life to save her people. When Esther helped her people, she was showing love. Children will talk about ways they, too, can show love to others.

On July 14 we will learn about Daniel, who must have been afraid when he faced the den of lions yet kept his trust in God. For Daniel, prayer became a tool for trusting God. Children will learn the verse "Pray at all times" from Romans 12:12.

FISH Makes a Splash

We're having a great summer with Fellowship in Someone's Home! Our FISHing expeditions are meeting regularly to share a short lesson or devotion and then to share snacks, drinks, an activity, and a lot of fun! Middle school students meet on Tuesday nights, and high school students meet on Thursday nights. Contact Katie Arnold at karnold@fpcbristol.org to get in the swim!

Work and Play on a Summer Day

Dogwood Acres & Orange Beach

On May 29, FPC high school students headed south to Dogwood Acres Presbytery Camp in Chipley, Florida. While there, students served by rehabbing old bunkhouses so they could be used for recreation storage. Some did demolition, some put up siding, some painted, and one group built an archery site. The students worked really hard, and the camp director was amazed by how much they completed and their enthusiasm for getting it done.

After a couple days at Dogwood Acres, the team headed to Orange Beach, Alabama, to attend a Student Life Conference. Students participated in morning and evening worship programs. The afternoon was free for beach and pool time. Orange Beach was a wonderful setting for sharing and group bonding. The whole experience was spiritually enriching for all.

Great Escape

Seven FPC high school students left on June 8 to serve on the Great Escape work crew. For two weeks these students set up, tore down, cleaned up, and led for more than 1,000 middle schoolers from all over the country. Our middle school ministry went to Great Escape for the second week. Students enjoyed worship led by a band, different speakers, and entertainers every morning and evening. In the afternoons they took part in a service project, played hard on the recreation field, and took part in the much anticipated Crud War. All of our students had a wonderful time of growth and renewal.--Katie Arnold, Director of Student Ministries

Montreat Musical Fun

The Worship & Music Conference at Montreat was great fun, and those who went had a wonderful time. Music was sung and rung, worship was experienced and participated in. The organ recitalist improvised to a silent movie, the talent show included three Osbornes, and the final concert was glorious. We ate Biltmore ice cream at the Huckleberry (more than once!), shopped at 10,000 Villages, caught some fish, and had rain enough to cool things down but not to cancel our daily picnic lunch!

Thanks to Lilly and Ray Osborne for once again serving as our cooks and chaperones, and to Alison Looney, Blake Looney, Annie Osborne, Daniel Osborne, and Ginny Osborne for being such great kids! - Steve & Vicki Fey

You May Have a Bent for It

We urgently need a volunteer to fold bulletins on Friday mornings, beginning at 10:30. It takes one person about one hour to fold all the late service bulletins in half and insert the extra page. If two people work on the buddy system, it will take half the time and yield twice the fun! Please call Jane Prater at 423-764-7176, if you'd like to volunteer for this behind-the-scenes but essential component of our worship services.

Push Our Buttons!

We are looking for people to work the soundboard at the 11:00 worship service for a month of Sundays. The two volunteers who have long monitored the board need some time off now and then, and come on--you know it's a cool thing to do! Kevin Buck and Lee Galliher have been alternating months and filling in for each other as needed. If you step up, you'll lift some of the responsibility off their shoulders and earn bragging rights on Monday mornings: "Yeah, I handle the soundboard on weekends for a great group of local musicians." You would be trained (it's pretty simple, really) and serve in this capacity for a month at a time, in alternation with Kevin and Lee and anyone else who volunteers. If you'd like to help us with this, please contact Steve or Vicki Fey, Kevin, or Lee.

Flying over the Lawn

Volunteering over the next few weeks to keep the church lawns looking as fair as the flag on the Fourth of July are Roger Sikorski, July 3-6; David Moore, July 10-13; and Tom King, July 17-20. To join our mowing team, contact Randy Cook at 423-956-1541 or npolecook@aol.com.

Music Notes

Music participants: The Sanctuary Choir will be taking a few weeks off from leadership responsibilities after a very full program year. Soloists and ensembles will participate in our 11:00 services through August 4. Our thanks go to all of the music volunteers for both services, who graciously give of their time and talents as music leaders in worship:

July 7: Sanctuary Bells

July 14: Pat & Bill Criswell

July 21: Nancy & Randy Cook, Morningstar Flute Ensemble

July 28: George Huber

August 4: Jordan Pennington

Cynthia Dobrinski

Sunday's music: On July 7, the Sanctuary Bells will offer two selections. The first is an arrangement of the traditional spiritual "All Night, All Day" by Hart Morris (b. 1946). Morris has been a noted composer for handbells; his career as a church musician has been in Presbyterian, Baptist, and Methodist churches. For the offertory, the bells will play "Aria" by Cynthia Dobrinski (b. 1950). Dobrinski, currently organist of First Presbyterian Church of Martinsville, Virginia, has also had a distinguished career as a handbell composer and clinician. "Aria," while a straightforward work, is noted for its lyrical and elegant melody.
