Two Service Opportunities This Saturday

Calling all volunteers! FPC members have two big opportunities, each drawing on different skill sets and both calling for heart, for service to our community this Saturday, June 22.

Sharing Christ

For our commitment to the downtown ministry Sharing Christ, we need volunteers to prepare ahead of time and then, on Saturday, serve chicken casseroles, marinated slaw, green beans, and dinner rolls. We also need donations of sandwich bread, peanut butter, jam, snack cakes, and fruit for bag lunches, and people to make the sandwiches and fill the bags. We estimate that we will need at least 150 dinners and 75 bag lunches.

To volunteer and/or donate food, please contact Tammy Connolly at lconn4691@btes.tv.

Habitat for Humanity

The second opportunity is to help Habitat for Humanity build porches and line basement walls at 253 Leonard Street in Abingdon. If you would like to pitch in but can't make it on Saturday, a further opportunity is coming up on Saturday, July 6, when the work will involve flooring and interior trim.

Available but not particularly skilled? No worries! Sign up to volunteer and discover how useful you can be. Workdays start at 8:00 a.m. and end by 4:00 p.m., but any time you can give is gratefully welcomed.

Call the church office to let us know you want to help. If you have any questions, find Pete Stigers at church or call him at (276) 258-5469. Pete is Operations Director for Habitat's Washington County, Virginia, chapter.

First of Two Heart to Heart Cluster Bible Studies Coming Up Tuesday

All the women of FPC and their friends are warmly invited to two Heart to Heart cluster Bible study opportunities this summer:

Tuesday, June 25, 9:30-11:00 a.m., in Betsy Turnbull's home. Jennifer Covington will lead the Bible study, and refreshments will be provided.

Saturday, July 13, 9:00-10:30 a.m., at the church. Bible study leader to be announced. Brunch will be served and child care will be provided.

For more information, contact Lensey Richardson.

Five-Cents-a-Meal Hunger Relief Collection June 30

On Sunday, June 30, we will collect an offering for the Five-Cents-a-Meal hunger relief program. This quarterly offering takes its name from its simple system of operation: each of us sets aside five cents for each meal we eat. By the end of three months, we have painlessly accumulated our personal offering, and together we make a hearty contribution toward feeding the hungry.

Kids' Kirk Next Two Sundays

our safe church logoKids' Kirk (for ages 4 through 1st grade) will meet during both the 8:30 and the 11:00 worship services for the next two Sundays.

June 23: We will hear the story of Samuel, whom God called as a boy during the night. Our emphasis will be on Samuel's listening to God. All the messages God gave to Samuel came true because Samuel trusted God and listened to him. We can trust and listen just as Samuel did.

June 30: We will learn about David and how God was with him as he took on Goliath. As David grew, he remembered, and he kept loving God. When God was with him, he was able to do many great things.

VBS: Moving and Memorable Visit with Paul

Paul spoke to us!

From June 10 through June 12, nearly 150 children and adults traveled to Athens to hear Paul tell of his dangerous journey to share the truth about Jesus. Paul shared about being in jail with Silas, hiding from an angry mob, and Jesus' calling him to give up his own persecution of believers.

We visited the market.

We visited the marketplace in Athens, played arena games, and enthusiastically sang "Give All Your Worries and Your Cares to God" and "We Will Live Forever." For all who gathered, it was a special time of experiencing the presence of Jesus and his great love for us.

Highlights

  • Pledges/Offerings/Reimbursements were just a bit under expectations ($74) but enough to provide us with ample funds to operate without having to tap into our prior-year reserves. While it is likely that we will have to make some transfer during the year as budgeted, the fact that we have been sustained to this point lessens our potential reliance on the reserve.
  • Prior-Year's Transfer: Going into 2013, we anticipated having to utilize $47,094 from prior-year's surplus funds to balance the budget. As noted, none of these funds have been utilized to date. Through May 31, we had budgeted to utilize $19,623.
  • Expenses continue to track favorably to expectations, coming in through the end of May at $4,615 below budget.
  • Expense Notes: (1) Interest paid on our Eastman CU capital loan was $17,552, as expected; (2) utility expenses, year-to-date, were $24,416, about $1,595 under budget; (3) our Evangelism & Outreach benevolences were $9,452 through May, $570 below scheduled disbursements. (Our goal, at a minimum, is to meet, if not exceed, budgeted disbursements for E&O on an annual basis.)
  • Capital Loan: The balance with Eastman CU at May 31, 2013, was $1,078,909. We had $78,000 on deposit in reserves for loan principal payments, covering roughly 10 months. We have projected additional pledge receipts of $51,450 from June through December.-Aaron Brooks, Finance Chair

Origami It Ain't

We urgently need a volunteer to fold bulletins on Friday mornings, beginning at 10:30. It takes one person about one hour to fold all the late service bulletins in half and insert the extra page. If two people work on the buddy system, it will take half the time and yield twice the fun! Please call Jane Prater at 423-764-7176, if you'd like to volunteer for this behind-the-scenes but essential component of our worship services.

Volunteer to Monitor Our Sound System

Two faithful people have long monitored the sound board for each 11:00 worship service, and their work is greatly appreciated. Kevin Buck and Lee Galliher alternate months and fill in for each other as needed. However, an additional person or two would ease their responsibility. If you are interested in serving in this capacity for a month at a time, in alternation with Kevin and Lee, please contact Steve or Vicki Fey, or Kevin or Lee. The training is simple, but the need is great!

'Tis the Season for Monsoon Weddings

It's hard to tell sometimes whether it's the season of weddings or of monsoons. Scheduled to skim across the lawn during breaks in the weather are Mark Mervis, June 19-22; Karen White-Smith and Eric Cline, June 26-29; and Roger Sikorski, July 3-6. We doff our philosopher's sombrero to them.

To volunteer for our mowing team, just contact Randy Cook at 423-956-1541 or npolecook@aol.com.

Music Notes

Music participants for June 23 and 30: Sanctuary Choir. The Sanctuary Choir will be on vacation for the month of July and the first Sunday of August. A variety of soloists and instrumental groups, from our congregation as well as guests, will provide music during this time.

Sunday's music: On June 23, the Sanctuary Choir will sing an arrangement of the German Lutheran hymn, "Praise to the Lord, the Almighty." The text was written by Joachim Neander, a much-loved seventeenth-century pastor, and is based loosely on Psalms 103 and 150. The tune slightly predates the words, but the two were paired in 1680 and have been closely associated ever since. The arrangement is by German composer Hugo Distler (1908-1942). Distler struggled with his role as a church musician and composer in Nazi Germany, and eventually took his own life, in part to avoid conscription into the military. This setting is an early work with the exuberant joy inspired by the text and melody.

John Rutter

On June 30, the Sanctuary Choir will sing "Open Thou Mine Eyes," a setting by John Rutter (b. 1945) of a poem by Lancelot Andrewes (1555-1626). Andrewes was an English clergyman who was central in the production of the King James translation of the Bible. The text is from a longer "Prayer for Grace" that was part of a collection of private devotions Andrewes wrote. It is a series of petitions asking for guidance in all of life. Rutter is one of the most significant composers of sacred choral music working today; his setting captures the simple elegance of this text.

Sanctuary Bells: Don't forget! We will rehearse Monday, July 1, at 5:30 p.m., then ring in worship July 7.
