June 6 & 13, 2013 |
Please Dedicate or Donate a New Hymnal |
The opportunity to contribute one or more copies of the new Presbyterian hymnal to stock our pews is still available. We thank all of you who purchased a total of 191 hymnals by the end of May. You have brought us slightly more than halfway to our goal of 350 copies of the twenty-first-century resource, Glory to God: The Presbyterian Hymnal.
You may still purchase any number of hymnals at $15 each for the simple joy of making a tangible gift to our church family's worship experience, or you may dedicate hymnals in memory or in honor of loved ones; a bookplate will note the appropriate designation. You can pick up order forms on Sunday mornings or get them from the church office throughout the week. We are grateful for your participation in our communal life! |
Final Meeting of Revelation Bible Study June 11 |
Betsy Turnbull's Tuesday evening Bible study will hold its final meeting June 11 and will take most of the rest of the summer off. This group will resume its regular schedule on Tuesday, August 20, once school is back in full swing. |
Heart to Heart Cluster Bible Studies Coming Up |
All the women of FPC and their friends are warmly invited to two Heart to Heart cluster Bible study opportunities this summer:
Tuesday, June 25, 9:30-11:00 a.m., in Betsy Turnbull's home. Jennifer Covington will lead the Bible study, and refreshments will be provided.
Saturday, July 13, 9:00-10:30 a.m., at the church. Bible study leader to be announced. Brunch will be served and child care will be provided.
For more information, contact Lensey Richardson. |
We Need a Bulletin Folder or Two on Friday Mornings |
We need someone to fold bulletins on Friday mornings, beginning at 10:30. It takes one person about one hour to fold all the late service bulletins and insert the extra page. If two people work on the buddy system, it will take half the time! Please call Jane Prater at 423-764-7176, if you'd like to volunteer for this behind-the-scenes but essential component of our worship services. |
Volunteer to Monitor Our Sound System |
Two faithful people have long monitored the sound board for each 11:00 worship service, and their work is greatly appreciated. Kevin Buck and Lee Galliher alternate months and fill in for each other as needed. However, an additional person or two would ease their responsibility. If you are interested in serving in this capacity for a month at a time, in alternation with Kevin and Lee, please contact Steve or Vicki Fey, or Kevin or Lee. The training is simple, but the need is great!

Hoist a Hammer for Habitat for Humanity |
Our own Pete Stigers serves as Operations Director for the Washington County, Virginia, chapter of Habitat for Humanity. Pete would like to enlist volunteers from our congregation for two upcoming workdays on their current build at 253 Leonard Street in Abingdon. On Saturday, June 22, we would help build porches and line the basement walls with foam board. On Saturday, July 6, the work will involve flooring and interior trim.
Available but not particularly skilled? No worries! Sign up to volunteer and discover how useful you can be. Workdays start at 8:00 a.m. and end by 4:00 p.m., but any time you can give is gratefully welcomed.
Sign-up sheets will be available at church on Sunday, or you can call the church office and let us know you want to help. If you have any questions, find Pete at church or call him at (276) 258-5469. Many thanks! |
Sharing Christ Opportunity Coming Up June 22 |
Our next opportunity for service at Sharing Christ Ministry in downtown Bristol will be Saturday, June 22. We need volunteers to prepare and serve chicken casseroles, marinated slaw, green beans, and dinner rolls. We also need donations of sandwich bread, peanut butter, jam, snack cakes, and fruit for bag lunches, and volunteers to make the sandwiches and fill the bags. We estimate that we will need at least 150 dinners and 75 bag lunches. To volunteer and/or donate food, please contact Tammy Connolly at lconn4691@btes.tv.

Kids' Kirk at Both Services June 9 and 16 |
Kids' Kirk will be offered at both the 8:30 and the 11:00 service June 9 and 16. On June 9, we will learn about the special relationship between God and Abraham. God promised a new land, and Abraham packed up and traveled to the place. God promised descendents, and Abraham patiently waited for the promise to be fulfilled. We will learn that God makes promises to us, too. On June 16 we will learn of Ruth, Naomi, and Boaz, and of Ruth's kindness to her mother-in-law and her thankfulness to the God who provided for them.

From Steve & Vicki Fey Music Notes |
Music participants for June 9 and 16: Sanctuary Choir.
| | Scott Gendel |
Sunday's music: The Sanctuary Choir anthem for June 9, "Prayer" by Scott Gendel, was one of the selections presented this past March as part of the Arts Series program, Sacred Music by Local Composers. Gendel is a freelance composer who makes his home in Emory, Virginia. About this piece, Gendel states: "'Prayer' was commissioned by the University United Methodist Church in Madison, Wisconsin, in memory of Marion Engelke, a longtime member of the church who was also a published poet. Among her unpublished works was this little prayer, a beautiful and simple expression of humble love." Gendel sets the text first in a straightforward statement, then uses the same melody with the voices singing in canon, concluding with the text again set in an uncomplicated manner. The anthem on June 16, "God Be In My Head" by Arlen Clarke, is a recent setting of a more ancient text. The words are said to be from the sixteenth century, and used at Salisbury Cathedral in England. They are a series of petitions that call on God to be in our thinking, words, actions, and with us at the end. Clarke, a resident of Greenville, South Carolina, is a freelance composer and performer who serves as director of music at a Catholic church. His setting captures the simple elegance of the words.
FPC members on stage: If you saw the cover of the June A! Magazine for the Arts, you saw Ginny Osborne as a member of Barter Theatre's Les Miserables cast. Ginny alternates roles, playing both the young Cosette and the young Eponine. Check the Barter schedule for dates and show times. And then Ginny's sister Annie Osborne plays the title role in Anne of Green Gables, the New Musical at Theatre Bristol's ArtSpace, 516 State Street. Dottie Havlik also has a small comic role as busybody Rachel Lynde. Shows will be Fridays and Saturdays, June 14, 15, 21, and 22, at 8:00 p.m., and Sundays, June 16 and 23, at 2:00 p.m. Get ticket information by calling Theatre Bristol's box office at 423-383-5979 or go to facebook.com/theatrebristol. |
