Family Game Night Is May 31!

Come to our intergenerational game night, sponsored by the FPC deacons, Friday, May 31, from 7:00 to 9:00. Dinner will not be served, but light snacks will be available. Bring your favorite board game to play around a table in the Fellowship Hall, or join the folks outside for a game of Whiffle ball, kickball, or capture-the-flag.

For more information, contact Pete Stigers. This is a great chance for informal fellowship and fun. We look forward to seeing you there!

Our Ethiopian Mission

Reaching Out to Berhane Yesus School

Since 2005, First Presbyterian Church has been committed to the support of Berhane Yesus Elementary School, serving approximately 600 students through the eighth grade in Dembi Dollo, Ethiopia. Because this annual aid for Berhane Yesus remains vital to the school's existence, we are asking you to help us continue our support of this mission.

"Berhane Yesus" means "Teaching in the Light of Jesus." Founded by Presbyterian medical missionaries, the school is now the leading church-affiliated school in this remote area of Ethiopia. Eighth-graders perform well on their required national tests, repeatedly scoring the highest in the region. Children of all faiths attend Berhane Yesus because of its academic excellence. As a result of the school's influence, many students, including Muslims, become Christians.

Dr. Jerman Disasa, a graduate of Berhane Yesus and now a professor at Presbyterian College, writes: "As a product of Presbyterian mission schools in Ethiopia, it was the name 'Presbyterian' that drew me to Presbyterian College in the first place. Those mission schools connected me, a hopelessly poor rural student, with education and faith, eternally."

In a recent email to Gordon, Dr. Robera Battal, Assistant to the Bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, Minneapolis Area Synod, writes: "Dear Pastor Turnbull, I recently came across information about your congregation's work with Berhane Yesus Elementary School in Dembi Dollo, Ethiopia. I am amazed by what God is doing through your congregation to help a community that is 9,000 miles away. I am a product of that school. I just want to say thank you for the good work that you have been doing in Dembi Dollo. May God continue to bless you and your congregation. "

As brothers and sisters in Christ, you are invited to pray about this need and respond as God leads you. You may make a one-time gift or offer a pledge for the amount that you commit to giving in 2013.

However you choose to respond, please continue to pray for God's grace on our mission partners in Ethiopia. Thanks for this support and for all the ways you reach out to share God's saving love with people in Bristol and throughout the world.

FPC Will Host Family Promise of Bristol May 26

FPC will play host for a week to Family Promise of Bristol, beginning this Sunday, May 26. Thanks to all those who are helping with this important ministry to our community!

Sharing Christ Opportunity Coming Up June 22

Our next opportunity for service at Sharing Christ Ministry in downtown Bristol will be Saturday, June 22. We need volunteers to prepare and serve chicken casseroles, marinated slaw, green beans, and dinner rolls. We also need donations of sandwich bread, peanut butter, jam, snack cakes, and fruit for bag lunches, and volunteers to make the sandwiches and fill the bags. We estimate that we will need at least 150 dinners and 75 bag lunches. To volunteer and/or donate food, please contact Tammy Connolly at lconn4691@btes.tv.

Volunteer to Monitor Our Sound System

Two faithful people have long monitored the sound board for each 11:00 worship service, and their work is greatly appreciated. Kevin Buck and Lee Galliher alternate months and fill in for each other as needed. However, an additional person or two would ease their responsibility. If you are interested in serving in this capacity for a month at a time, in alternation with Kevin and Lee, please contact Steve or Vicki Fey, or Kevin or Lee. The training is simple, but the need is great!

Summer Newsletter Schedule Begins

This issue of Windows opens our summer schedule of a new newsletter every other Thursday. Our next issue will appear June 6. Our regular weekly schedule will resume August 1. Enjoy your summer, and thanks for reading!

"Fellowship in Someone's Home" Begins Tonight!

Middle school students will meet on Tuesday nights, beginning May 28, at the Pendleys' home.

High school students will meet on Thursday nights, beginning May 23, at Briggs Evans's home. We will share a short lesson or devotion and have a lot of fun!

We are now fishing for families to host us! Hosts provide a meeting place, snacks, drinks, and an activity of some sort. The activity does not have to be elaborate, just something that will pull our teens together and give them an opportunity for fellowship. Last summer we swam, played volleyball, competed in Minute to Win It and The Amazing Race, had a bonfire, and more! Contact

Katie Arnold at karnold@fpcbristol.org and catch your FISH now!

High School Mission and Beach Trip

Eighteen high school students and four adults will depart May 29 for Dogwood Acres Presbytery Camp in Chipley, Florida. While there, students will work on building projects, clean-up, and set-up so that Dogwood Acres will be prepared to host hundreds of kids for their weekly summer camps.

On June 1, the group will pack up and travel to Orange Beach, Alabama, where they will participate in a discipleship conference with hundreds of other high school students from around the country. The group will begin the trek back to Bristol on June 5.

In addition to the adults (Katie Arnold, Amy Benjamin, Preston Mitchell, and Dave Welch) who will accompany them, please keep the following participants in your prayers!

VBS News

Register Now!

Vacation Bible School begins Monday, June 10. If you haven't registered your children (or your child friends), please do so now. We need to know how many children are coming so that we can prepare a happy and instructive experience for each child. You will find registration forms, along with flyers to share with friends and neighbors, in the Fellowship Hallway and the church office.

Volunteers, Please Note

if you missed training, please see Ann Abel, Lilly Osborne, or Amanda Hankins.

Priority Materials

We need all the materials in list below, but we especially need the paper towel rolls, the sheets, and the easy-up canopies. If you have such a canopy and are willing to lend it, please let Tina Witcher or Ann Abel know. These are the supplies we need:

  • Empty paper towel rolls (we need at least 65 more)
  • Easy-up canopy tents
  • Flat sheets (solid colors)
  • Artificial greenery or ivy
  • Woven rugs
  • Artificial fruit
  • Crocks, jugs, pottery, Greek statues
  • Rope lights/Christmas lights

Dates & Times

It won't be long before we walk through the marketplace in ancient Athens, conveniently relocated to the FPC campus, as Vacation Bible School encounters Paul on his second missionary journey. VBS is scheduled for Monday through Wednesday, June 10-12. Morning hours will be 9:00-12:00. The Wednesday evening dinner and program will begin at 5:30. Be sure to save time on your calendars for the final events! For more information, please contact Ann Abel, Lilly Osborne, or Tina Witcher.

Volunteer for Kids' Kirk or Sunday School

our safe church logoSummer is almost here, and our children's Sunday School teachers are preparing to take a two-month break. We are now looking for people to fill in. Our summer schedule also means we will need volunteers to help with Kids' Kirk during each Sunday morning service in June. Please contact Ann Abel at 423-764-7176 or aabel@fpcbristol.org if you can assist.

Growers, Mowers, Rowers

We are awash in green. Fortunately, we have seasoned mowers (although we could use rowers) to keep us from floating away. Changsub Shim and Jae Shim will find a day from May 22 to 25 to keep us shipshape and Bristol fashion, and Brian Miller will follow their sail sometime between May 29 and June 1. We hope that Aaron Brooks will find drier weather between June 5 and 8.

If you'd like to put your oar in, volunteer for the mowing team! Just contact Randy Cook at 423-956-1541 or npolecook@aol.com.

Music Notes

Music participants: May 26: Sanctuary Choir; Alan Hunter, organist; Pat Flannagan, director. June 2: Sanctuary Choir. The Feys are on vacation from May 20 to May 29.

Martin Shaw

Sunday's music: The anthem for May 26, Martin Shaw's "With a Voice of Singing," drawn from Isaiah 48:20 and other verses, has remained a staple of sacred choral literature since it was written, in 1923. Shaw (1875-1958) was a noted English composer of both sacred and secular works; this anthem is a joyous exclamation that "the Lord hath delivered his people." The anthem for June 2, "Cantate Domino," by Giuseppe Pitoni (1657-1743), is a setting of the first two verses of Psalm 149. This text calls on us to praise the Lord with new songs and with vigor. Pitoni spent his career as an influential composer and organist in Rome, where he produced a large body of sacred music that was highly regarded in his lifetime. Today he is remembered for just a few works, including this brief anthem, which effectively captures the joy of the text.

Programs of note: Check out the Paramount's schedule for the weekly David Caldwell Tunes at Noon for some great performances this summer. This series is sponsored by our own Frances Caldwell in memory of her late husband, David.
