Combined Worship May 12 for Confirmation Sunday |

In a combined worship service this Sunday, May 12, at 10:30 a.m. in the sanctuary, we will hear the proclamations of faith of our newest class of confirmands and receive these young people as members of our church: Bella Bane, Bobby Dabbs, Alison Looney, Annie Osborne, Maria Poteat, Dewey Pendley, and Sam Shim. We know you will want to be here to welcome them.
Bell and Song
This special service will be filled with song, and the children of the church will bring their musical gifts to it. But first, practice, practice! Children's Handbells will rehearse at 9:00 Sunday morning in the sanctuary. Sunday School will begin after all the children practice their song for the morning's service together at 9:30.
Kids' Kirk
In Kids' Kirk on May 12, we will hear stories of Jesus and children that teach us that he is with us. We will learn that no matter where we are or what we are doing, we can call on Jesus and he'll be there. "Let the children come to me" (Luke 18:16). |

Highlights
- Pledges: Through March 31, our Pledges/Offerings/Reimbursements outpaced budget expectations by roughly $2,000. It is important to point out that no prior-year surplus transfers have been required to meet current year expenses.
- Prior-Year's Transfer: Going into 2013, we anticipated having to utilize $47,094 from prior-year's surplus funds to balance the budget. As noted, none of these funds have been utilized to date.
- Expenses overall have tracked favorably to revenue expectations, coming in for the quarter $4,286 under budget. It should be mentioned, however, that because our budget was not officially passed until March, many of the now "budgeted" expense items will be realized in the coming months. In other words, we should see this positive variance close in the coming months.
- Expense Notes: (1) Interest paid on our Eastman CU capital loan was $10,634, just under budget; (2) utility expenses for the quarter were $16,004, about $154 over budget (but $274 under the same time last year); (3) under Fellowship line items, the Women's Retreat was over budget by roughly $2,000; however, income for the Women's Retreat is similarly over budget.
- Capital Loan: The balance with Eastman CU on March 31 was $1,131,944. We had $113,014 on deposit in reserves for loan principal payments. (In April, we made an additional principal reduction on the loan of $34,577.)--Aaron Brooks, Finance Chair

Spring Cleaning Day This Saturday
Our annual Spring Cleaning Day is set for Saturday, May 11, from 8:00 a.m. till noon. The Deacons' Household Task Team will send small teams from the church to FPC members' homes to help with the chores of the season: clearing out clutter, changing light bulbs and smoke detector batteries, doing yard work, and making minor repairs. If you are interested in some help on Spring Cleaning Day, there is still time to let us know! Just return a form to the office or call the church at (423) 764-7176.

Final Presbyterian Women's Meeting of Program Year |
The Presbyterian Women will have our final meeting of the program year Tuesday, May 14, at the church. Circle will begin at 11:00 a.m., and Bible study with Gordon Turnbull will follow at 11:30, after which we will have lunch together in the parlor. Please make lunch reservations with the church office by calling (423) 764-7176. If you have any stamps for our missionary project, please bring them with you. We look forward to seeing you!

FPC Teens FISH for Summer Hosts |

Fellowship in Someone's Home (FISH) will begin as soon as school is out. Middle school students will meet on Tuesday nights, beginning May 28, and high school students will meet on Thursday nights, beginning May 23. We share a short lesson or devotion and always have a lot of fun!
We are now fishing for families to host us! Hosts provide a meeting place, snacks, drinks, and an activity of some sort. The activity does not have to be elaborate, just something that will pull our teens together and give them an opportunity for fellowship. Last summer we swam, played volleyball, competed in Minute to Win It and The Amazing Race, had a bonfire, and more! Contact Katie Arnold at karnold@fpcbristol.org and reserve your FISH now! |
Middle School Mania Strikes Again! |
Celebrate the last day of school at Middle School Mania! All sixth through eighth graders are invited to get the summer started at a glow stick dance party on May 22, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. The FPC Youth Wing will be transformed into a blacklight wilderness with glow sticks, glow-in-the-dark paint, and more. Wear your craziest neon outfit, grab friends, and get ready to party the night away!

Next month's Vacation Bible School brings ancient Athens to the FPC campus to get a close look at Paul's second missionary journey and talk to the Apostle himself. Meanwhile, we are preparing to train our volunteers and set the stage.
Volunteer Training
Volunteers will choose the one training date that is most convenient for them: Wednesday, May 15, or Sunday, May 19, 6:30-8:00 p.m. in either case.
Materials Needed
Regardless of whether you have any of the following items, we would appreciate your prayers! We are putting out a general call for:
- Empty paper towel rolls
- Easy-up canopy tents
- Flat sheets (solid colors)
- Artificial greenery or ivy
- Woven rugs
- Artificial fruit
- Crocks, jugs, pottery, Greek statues
- Rope lights/Christmas lights
Registration Begins
Registration will begin this Sunday morning! A registration table will be set up during Sunday School and before the combined worship service, and forms will also be available in the church office on weekdays. Early registration is very helpful in planning for Vacation Bible School, so let us know you are coming.
We encourage everyone who has children to sign them up now! And please invite friends and neighbors to register their children for this enriching event. Our records show that the children from outside our congregation who attend have usually been invited by someone from within our congregation.
Dates & Times
VBS is scheduled for Monday through Wednesday, June 10-12. Morning hours will be 9:00-12:00. The Wednesday evening dinner and program will begin at 5:30. Be sure to save time on your calendars for the final events! For more information, please contact Ann Abel, Lilly Osborne, or Tina Witcher. |
Mowers Shape Course for Church Lawn |
In an inversion of the normal order, April flowers have brought May showers. David Moore will look for a dry patch between May 8 and 11 to take the Tiger Cat out. Dan Gross will hope for a sailor's moon between May 15 and 18. If you've always wanted to go to sea, volunteer to mow in spring! Just hail Randy Cook at 423-956-1541 or npolecook@aol.com.

From Steve & Vicki Fey Music Notes
Sunday's music participants: Sanctuary Choir, Savior's Singers Children's Choir, Children's Handbells, Sunday School children, Jubilate Youth Choir, Praise Team members Abbey Kitts, Mark Mervis, Shannan Miller, Fred Foy Strang, Jacob Strang.
Sunday's schedule: Youth choir parents and parents of second- through fifth-grade choir and handbell children, take note! The revised Sunday morning schedule for the 10:30 combined service on May 12 is as follows: Children's Handbells will meet in the sanctuary at 9:00 a.m. The whole children's Sunday School will rehearse their song at 9:30. Savior's Singers Children's Choir (2nd-5th grade) will come to the robing room at 10:15 to robe and to practice "Tree Song." Jubilate Youth Choir will come to the choir room at 10:15 to practice "Psalm 139." Thanks!
Sunday's music: The congregational music for the combined service celebrating confirmation is of a rich variety from divergent sources; all but one selection will be included in the new Presbyterian hymnal, Glory to God. The first song, "Shout to the North," written in 1995, comes from an English Christian band and offers the message that God will provide the strength we need to proclaim the good news. Following this will be "O God, You Are My God." While not directly from the Psalms, it has language similar to that of Psalms 31:14 and 5:3.
| | Paul Vasile |
The Sunday School children will lead us in the refrain to "We Are One in the Spirit,"a song written in the 1960s for a Chicago youth choir to sing at ecumenical, interracial events. "Lord Have Mercy," sung as part of the prayer of confession, is set to an early American folk hymntune; this is followed by the black gospel style setting of "Glory to God" by Paul Vasile. This 2008 composition has already proved to be one of the most popular discoveries of the hymnal committee.
The middle hymn, "I Have Decided to Follow Jesus" (the only selection not in Glory to God), comes from Christians worshipping in India in the 1960s. The closing hymn, "Praise Ye the Lord, the Almighty," comes from the seventeenth-century German pietist movement, which encouraged a personal expression of faith. In response to the benediction, we will conclude the service by singing "We Will Walk with God," a sending song from South Africa.
In addition to the congregational music, the Savior's Singers' anthem, "Tree Song," was written by the blind composer and performer Ken Medema in 1978. It uses the analogy of trees with deep roots growing strong, just as we grow strong by having deep roots in our faith. The Sanctuary Choir's offertory anthem, "Gracious Spirit, Dwell with Me," has a text by a nineteenth-century English minister; it calls on the Holy Spirit to fill and direct our lives. The musical setting is by Alabama composer K. Lee Scott, who adapted a seventeenth-century French chant melody. |
