Spring Cleaning Day Set for May 11
Our annual Spring Cleaning Day is set for Saturday, May 11, from 8:00 a.m. till noon. The Deacons' Household Task Team will send small teams from the church to FPC members' homes to help with the chores of the season: clearing out clutter, changing light bulbs and smoke detector batteries, doing yard work, and making minor repairs. Look for sign-up forms during worship soon. If you are interested in getting some help on Spring Cleaning Day, please return a form to the office or call the church at (423) 764-7176.
Anyone who wants to join in a morning of service and fellowship can volunteer. And never fear, the Men's Breakfast scheduled for that morning will end in time for the heartiest breakfasters and cleanup crew to join the fun. Call the church office or email Gordon Turnbull at gturnbull@fpcbristol.org. Put "Spring Cleaning" in the subject heading, and we will put you on a team! |
Bach Is Basically Final Arts Series Concert |
| | Lisa Ransom |
To say that the final program in our 2012-2013 Arts Series will feature three highly regarded members of the Carolina Symphony Chamber Players is to narrow their actual scope considerably. In addition to active careers in performance at home and abroad, all three are music faculty at prestigious universities. Bristol's own Elizabeth (Lisa) Holler Ransom, flute, will be here with two of her colleagues, Jacqui Carrasco, violin, and Peter Kairoff, piano, to play a program they call Basically Bach, featuring a rich variety of chamber music by Johann Sebastian Bach.
This delightful trio of flute, violin, and piano music will take place Sunday, May 5, at 3:00 p.m. in our sanctuary. Suggested ticket donations for this program are $15 adults/$5 students ages 6 through college. |
Bible Study Turns Off the DVD Player Until Fall |
The Wednesday morning DVD Bible study group is taking a DVD break until fall, but we will gather in the church parlor at 9:30 on second and fourth Wednesday mornings through the summer to share in fellowship, devotionals, and prayer. You are welcome to join us on any or all of these dates from May through August: May 8 and 22, June 12 and 26, July 10 and 24, August 14 and 28. We look forward to sharing with you this summer!
During the school year, we meet weekly and use DVD studies that are geared toward helping us to live as disciples of Christ Jesus. Lorri Looney facilitates our group, using materials written by well-known Bible teachers, such as Beth Moore, Kay Arthur, and Priscilla Shirer. Our last session of the 2012-2013 school year was April 17. Please come and join us when we begin anew in the fall! For more information, call Lorri at 423-573-1676. |
Don't Miss Senior Sunday! |
It's high school graduation time again! We will have an evening of celebration, sharing, and maybe a little roasting on Sunday, May 5, at 5:00 in the Fellowship Hall. Everyone is invited to this celebratory dinner. Be thinking of stories to tell about our seniors. Katie Arnold, Director of Youth Ministries, is collecting pictures for this event. If you have any photos of our seniors at past church events, please send them to karnold@fpcbristol.org by April 27.
Calling All Grads
This time of year isn't just about graduating from high school. Every year we look forward to honoring the achievements of all the new graduates among us. Please call the church office (423-764-7176) if you or a member of your family will be graduating from high school, college, or any other educational or training program this spring. We need the following information by Sunday, April 28, for our recognition efforts: graduate's name, current (not future) school or program, degree or certification earned, and field. Thank you for your help! |
Encourage Our Confirmands |
Since October 2012, FPC's confirmation students have participated in weekly classes that have taught, informed, and challenged their idea of faith. Watching them grow over the past school year and take ownership of their faith has been a joy and an inspiration.
Our 2012-2013 confirmands are Bella Bane, Bobby Dabbs, Alison Looney, Annie Osborne, Maria Poteat, Dewey Pendley, and Sam Shim.
On Sunday, May 12, they will have the opportunity to proclaim their faith to our church family and become members of First Presbyterian Church. As they prepare for this special day, we are asking friends and family to send in cards and letters of spiritual encouragement to our confirmands. The kind words you share will not only encourage them as they prepare to be confirmed but also be kept for years as a reminder of the great cloud of witnesses that surrounds them and that will continue to love, guide, and encourage them as they run the race.
If you would like to participate, please mail or deliver all cards and letters to the attention of Katie Arnold at FPC by May 5.
Thank you for joining us as we celebrate this important and exciting time in the lives of our students! Please feel free to contact Katie at karnold@fpcbristol.org if you have any questions. |
Smash Tour for Middle School Students |
Sixth- to eighth-graders are invited to an unforgettable night, Tuesday, April 30, as Smash Tour comes to Bristol. Forget what you thought you knew about illusionists! This tour is all about bringing you a mind-blowing, laugh-out-loud evening unlike anything you've ever experienced.
We'll meet at the church at 5:30 for dinner. After dinner we will head to Euclid Avenue Baptist Church for an incredible show. This is a free event! For more information, contact Katie Arnold, Director of Student Ministries, at karnold@fpcbristol.org. |
Parable of Salt Yields Ice Cream |
Children in Wednesday Night Kids learned about the Parable of the Salt as the semester wrapped up. Last week they brought the lesson to a cool conclusion. Among the many beneficial uses of salt, it turns out, is its role in the making of ice cream. In the photo at right, they listen intently to Ann Abel's instructions.
There was a lot of ice to bag, and fortunately the fifth-grade girls were on hand to help.
The secret to making ice cream this way is to shake it, shake it, shake it! |
Mowers Make Quick Work of Church Lawn |
Grass waits for no man, woman, or machine, but the volunteer mowers of FPC are on it. Out next on the Tiger Cat is Jim White, April 24-27, followed by Tom King, May 1-4. David Moore takes over May 8-11. If you'd like to join these few, these snappy few, contact Randy Cook at 423-956-1541 or npolecook@aol.com.

From Steve & Vicki Fey Music Notes
Music participants: April 28: Sanctuary Choir; May 5: King University Symphonic Choir.
Sunday's music: English composer Thomas Tallis (c. 1505-1585) successfully negotiated the difficult terrain of remaining a Roman Catholic while serving monarchs during the shifting state of religion in England from Henry VIII through Elizabeth I. Tallis composed in styles (and languages) that met the needs of the church in England as it changed with the monarchs. The Sanctuary Choir anthem this week, "If Ye Love Me," is thought to have been written sometime during the reign of Edward VI (1547-1553), and is a setting of John 14:15-17. Although it predates the King James version, the text is essentially identical with that later translation. Tallis is careful not to obscure the words, setting the text simply with a limited amount of musical imitation. The resulting anthem has remained a standard of the sacred choral literature, both for its elegance and its simple clarity of expression.
Programs of note: The Paramount Chamber Players will present their final concerts for the season this weekend. This Friday, April 26, the program will take place in the sanctuary of First Presbyterian Church in Kingsport at 7:30 p.m. Saturday's program will take place in Bristol at the Paramount, also at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday's program will be in the sanctuary of Sinking Spring Presbyterian Church in Abingdon at 3:00 p.m. Members of this chamber music ensemble include Vicki Fey and former church member Alice Keith (Keithie) Knowles.
Also this weekend, the King University Symphonic & Jazz Bands will present a program on Friday, April 26, at 7:30 p.m., at the Paramount. And on Saturday, April 27, at 8:00 p.m. in the Memorial Chapel on campus, King's Jazz/Gospel Choir, The Queens of King, and All the King's Men will sing their spring concert.
Check your April A! Magazine for the Arts for more information and more programs, from dance to choral music and beyond. And don't forget our local schools' end-of-the-year band and choral concerts. Several of our youth will be participating in these concerts. |
