Non-Women's Retreat Set for Friday! |
While the women of FPC are settling in at their lodge in Blowing Rock, those left behind will be having a grand old time at the Umpteenth (Almost) Annual Non-Women's Retreat!
The event begins around 6:00 p.m. this Friday, March 1, and ends at bedtime (yours or your children's, whichever comes first). Bring a piece of your favorite grillable meat, and the church will provide the salad, potato, drink, dessert ... and a GRILL! Oh, and we will have pizza available for the kids, if that is their preference!
We are anticipating a great evening--a chance for kids to play together while young dads trade recipes and come up with fun craft ideas for Saturday activities!! What could be better?!?
The location is John Vann's house, 84 Fairway Drive. Please communicate your plan to attend by noon on Friday by calling John at (423) 360-1153 or emailing him at vannjm@gmail.com. Call him if you need directions.
Note: we adhere to only one very important rule: you must go home with the same number of children you brought with you, and preferably your own! John Vann |

Wednesday Night Kids
This week we continue with the parable of the salt from Matthew 5:13. We learned last week about the importance of salt when Apprentice Chowdown mistakenly put too much of it in the cookies! We will learn other uses for salt, and we will experiment with salt to make an egg float. Come join us as we learn about the teachings of Jesus while having a great time together. |

Lenten Worship Series
"Keeping on the Path" |
The season of Lent invites us to recall Jesus' singular obedience to God's will in his calling to be the Christ. In reading through the gospel account, we walk with Jesus through the experiences that lead him to his crucifixion. Each step of the way, Jesus overcomes the temptation to misuse his gifts, to redefine his mission, to ignore God's will, and to avoid his costly sacrifice.
In our lives of faith, we face the same kinds of temptation. In thinking together this season about Jesus' faithfulness, we may discover power and insight for our own faithful journeys on the path toward God's will for us. Join us each Sunday in worship as we make our Lenten journey toward Easter by "Keeping on the Path." |
Special Care for Children on Sunday Mornings
Did you know that on Sunday mornings, as a part of our children's ministries, First Presbyterian Church offers care for children with special needs? In the Education Wing, we provide a safe and caring place with trained special education staff, while parents worship. If you or someone you know would like more information, please contact Ann Abel at the church office, (423) 764-7176, or aabel@fpcbristol.org.

Sunday Kids' Kirk
Nehemiah, Little Red Hen Teach Cooperation
This week we will be talking about cooperation and learn about Nehemiah rebuilding the wall around Jerusalem. By working together, the Israelites rebuilt the wall in only 52 days! With cooperation as the theme, the lesson will be introduced by the classic story of The Little Red Hen. Kids' Kirk will be offered at both the 8:30 and 11:00 services.

Sunday's Student Fellowship Theme: The Great Banquet
Stories are powerful. They can change our point of view, convince us of the importance of a message, and inspire us to change our lives, simply by sharing a piece of someone's journey. When Jesus told stories, there was always a point that needed to be heard. And, often, the point wasn't something that would naturally be well received and welcomed. But Jesus kept on telling his stories because he had an important message to relay. And that was the message of the kingdom of God. Jesus knows that the things in our life can sometimes take the place of the most important thing-our invitation to participate in the great story of God's kingdom. Come to The Great Banquet in Student Fellowship this Sunday evening, March 3.

Ski Retreat a Cool Success
A big thank you to everyone who helped make last weekend's ski retreat a success! Fun was had by all and there were no injuries! |
Pins and Pizza Bowled 'Em Over
Grades 3 through 5 worked on bowling skills Sunday afternoon, February 24, as we gathered at the lanes to try our skills with those heavy bowling balls. Amidst the cheering and high fives, Tobin Chambers emerged as the high scorer. After bowling, we returned to the church for pizza, veggies, chips, and cookies and still had time to enjoy the outdoors on a very pleasant sunny day. All students in grades 3 through 5 are encouraged to watch for information about an upcoming movie night. |
Called to Serve with the Care Shepherds?
We are excited that the Care Shepherd ministry is resuming this month, under the direction of the Board of Deacons, and we would like to share the opportunity to serve in this meaningful ministry of congregational care.
The goal of the Care Shepherd ministry is to show Christian love and care to those of our church family who are in need. Opportunities exist to provide meals to those just home from the hospital, or to send a card or make a phone call to someone in a special care facility, or to provide comfort in other situations. Volunteers serve one month at a time on a Care Shepherd team that coordinates the needs of the congregation for that month. We already have a team in place for February but are humbly seeking volunteers to serve in the remaining months of 2013.
If you are willing to serve as a volunteer on a Care Shepherd team, please contact Lorri Looney at jeffandlorri@msn.com or call the church office at (423) 764-7176. Please indicate whether you prefer to serve for a particular month or are open to serve at any time during the year. Thank you for your interest and support. |

We are getting ready for mowing season, which begins March 20 and runs through the end of October. The Tiger Scag has been serviced and is ready to roll. However, several of our human mowers are unable to continue their service, so we ask you to give prayerful consideration to taking their spots on the team. You would commit to mowing the church lawns once every five or six weeks, a task that takes three or four hours.
Please email Randy Cook at npolecook@aol.com or call him at (423) 956-1541 to volunteer. He will train you on the safe operation of the mower. Even if you can mow only once or twice during the season, we can use you! |

Wanted: Vanilla Wafers for Fairmount Students |
Everyone needs a lift in the afternoon, but not everyone can afford an afternoon snack. For that reason, the Neighborhood Initiatives Steering Committee is collecting vanilla wafers for children at Fairmount Elementary School who would otherwise go without when snack time comes. The committee is asking us to bring in boxes of vanilla wafers and put them in the Little Red House in the Fellowship Hallway. The committee will take them to the school, and the teachers will divide them into snack portions as needed. Thank you for your caring heart and crunchy cookies!

FPC Arts Series to Present Local Choral Music |
| | King College Choir |
In the second program of our 2012-2013 Arts Series, the Sanctuary Choir will join with the King College Symphonic Choir and Collegium Musicum to present a wonderful program of choral music, all written by local composers. The combined chorus will be under the direction of Dr. Pat Flannagan of King College and Steve and Vicki Fey. The concert will take place on Sunday, March 10, at 3:00 p.m., in our sanctuary. Suggested donations are $10 for adults and $5 for students (age 6 through college).
Our Arts Series strives to share with the community events that enrich and inspire the life of the people of Bristol, to share our unique and marvelous facilities, and to encourage the artistically gifted of our region and beyond. For more information contact the church at (423) 764-7176. |
From Steve & Vicki Fey Music Notes
Sunday's music participants: Sanctuary Choir.
| | Dan Gawthrop |
Sunday's music: Although a resident of the D.C. area for many years, composer Dan Gawthrop (b. 1949) has made his home in Jonesborough, Tennessee, for the past several years. Gawthrop is widely respected throughout the US and abroad, working full-time as a composer, frequently on commission. He writes for many different genres but is best known for his choral works and organ music. The Sanctuary Choir anthem, "Trust in the Lord," is a setting of a text adapted from Proverbs 3 by the poet Jane Griner (Dan's wife). With a number of assurances of God's goodness to us, it has a recurring refrain ("Trust in the Lord, trust in the Lord") that reinforces the comfort offered by the text and music. Originally commissioned to celebrate a wedding anniversary, it is appropriate in this season of Lent as we reflect on the goodness of God to us through Christ's sacrifice.
Lenten meditations: The third of the noon Lenten organ meditations offered by Central Presbyterian Church will take place Wednesday, March 6, in their sanctuary and will feature organist Jim Spirup. There is no charge, but donations will be appreciated.
2012-2013 Arts Series: If you don't have this program on your calendar, mark it now! The Sanctuary Choir, along with two King University choral ensembles, will present a wonderful program of sacred choral music, all written by local composers, Sunday, March 10, at 3:00 p.m., in our sanctuary. A nursery will be provided for children ages 3 and under. Suggested donations are $10 adults/$5 students ages 6 through college. |
