Supporting Our Ministry in this New Year |
Our ministry for 2013 is under way, but our financial planning for this ministry is not yet finished. There is still time to strengthen our mission by pledging your financial support for 2013 operations. Please call or email Betsy Galliher, or send in your pledge form to her attention in the church office. Thanks for your faithful giving! |
Tonight: Sharretts Talk about Bulgarian Mission |
FPC members Larry and Courtney Sharrett, our missionaries to Bulgaria through Athletes in Action, will give an update on their work tonight, Thursday, January 3, at 7:00 p.m. in the chapel. During each of the past two summers, they have led "reverse mission trips" to the US for Bulgarian professional basketball players. Several members of FPC have been involved in these outreaches. Come and hear their mission report of God's sovereign work in Bulgaria.

Kids' Kirk News
Growing with Jesus |
Kids' Kirk will meet at both services on Sunday, January 6. We learned about the Dirty Jobs of Bethlehem as we prepared for the birth of Jesus, and now we move forward to a lesson on Jesus, at age twelve, becoming separated from his parents while visiting the temple in Jerusalem. His worried parents found him listening to the teachers in the temple and amazing those around him with his understanding. Emphasis will be on Jesus growing in wisdom, stature, and favor with God and man. Children will learn that they, too, should grow in the same way.

New Semester for Wednesday Night Kids Begins January 16 |
Our Wednesday Night Kids begin a new semester of exploration and discovery January 16. This semester, children from age 4 through fifth grade will learn about Heaven's Kitchen, a series exploring the parables that Jesus told. Using a cooking theme, we will learn how Jesus used ordinary ingredients like soil and seeds, salt, yeast, wheat, and fruit to teach about everyday living here on earth. Whether competing in an Iron Chef Competition, making play-dough food, participating in the telling of a parable, tasting the ingredient of the day, or investigating with a kitchen science experiment, kids will learn not only what the parables mean but also how to apply them to their own lives. Come meet Chef Emerald and Chowdown the Apprentice, as we discover that each of us can listen and learn from the Bible.

Bloodmobile Here When Wednesday Programs Resume |
The Marsh Blood Services Bloodmobile will be in the FPC parking lot from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 16. We need at least 20 people to make appointments to donate blood, so please do so if you possibly can. We hope that you will find it convenient to give blood then refresh yourself at our fellowship dinner. Sign-up sheets and flyers are in the usual places at the church-in your Sunday bulletin, in the narthex, and in the Fellowship Hall.
You're never too old to give blood, and you can be as young as 17 (as long as you have parental consent). For more information or to make an appointment, call the church office at 423-764-7176. |

Bristol Faith in Action Needs More Flu Fighters |
Bristol Faith in Action urgently needs more flu season care kits to distribute to families in need. Many items that promote health and cleanliness cannot be purchased with food stamps. Among these are disinfectant wipes, hand sanitizer, germ-killing sprays, and tissues. The Evangelism & Outreach Committee asks the FPC family to collect such care kits, or items for them, over the next several weeks. Please bring your donations to the church and place them in the gray bin under the steps in the Music Wing. Thank you!

From Steve & Vicki Fey Music Notes | |
Christmas thanks: Thanks to all the music volunteers who participated in the Christmas Eve service. There were 12 instrumentalists ranging in age from eighth-graders through college graduates, and three singing ensembles, two of which included youth choir alumni. Your gifts are always appreciated, perhaps more so at this time of year!
Music participants for January 6: Sanctuary Choir.
| | Paul Sjolund |
Sunday's music: The Sanctuary Choir anthem, "Brightest and Best," has a text by Reginald Heber (1783-1826), and was first published in 1811, when the author was only 28. A gifted poet, this English clergyman wrote a series of hymns for each Sunday in the church year; his best-known work is "Holy, Holy, Holy," written for Trinity Sunday. This week's anthem text was created for Epiphany Sunday, the celebration of the visit of the Magi, which also represents Christ's revelation to the world. About this text, Paul Westermeyer writes, "It drives to the fourth stanza, where the heart's adoration and the prayers of the poor count for more than oblations we make as if by our efforts we could secure God's favor." The musical setting is by American composer Paul Sjolund (b. 1935), who captures the joyous celebration of the text.
Rehearsal reminders: Happy New Year! The Sanctuary Choir resumed rehearsals Wednesday, January 2. Cherub Choir and Jubilate Youth Choir start back on Sunday, January 13. Children's Handbells, Youth Handbells, and Savior's Singers Children's Choir will resume Wednesday, January 16, as the regular Wednesday evening program gets going again. Sanctuary Bells will meet again Monday, January 14. Thanks to one and all for a blessed Advent and Christmas season of music making! |
