Christmas Eve Candlelight Service Monday Night |
We will hold a Christmas Eve candlelight service with communion on Monday, December 24, at 8:00 p.m. in the sanctuary. A nursery for infants and toddlers will be available.
As we celebrate the transition from Advent to Christmas, the Sanctuary Choir will sing two anthems, and the Jubilate Youth Choir and the Young Men's Ensemble will sing as well. Violinists will play several duets, and an instrumental ensemble will accompany Christmas carols.
We urge all who can to join us for this beautiful and joyful experience. |

The end of 2012 is close at hand, and our leaders and staff are working hard to complete our work for the year and plan for the year ahead. As we finish this year, here are four things that each of us can do to strengthen the church's ministry.
Fulfill our 2012 commitment. Have you fulfilled your pledge for 2012? If you are not sure, feel free to call Betsy Galliher at the church for an update on your pledge status.
Consider extra giving. Many people choose to remember or honor loved ones with special gifts to the church at Christmas. Others plan significant donations to worthy causes at year's end. Please consider First Presbyterian Church with this kind of year-end, "above-and-beyond" giving.
Pledge for 2013. Our budget for 2013 depends mainly upon pledged offerings; we cannot plan responsibly for ministry without these commitments. If you know that you want to support Christ's ministry through our church, please communicate that desire by submitting a pledge toward our work together.
Pray for the church. All of the material aspects of our ministry are subordinate to the spiritual dimension of our life together. Please join in asking God to enrich our life and direct our work together so that every aspect of our ministry glorifies the Lord whom we serve.
Thank you for your continued commitment to the ministry of Jesus Christ through our church. |

Sharretts to Speak about Bulgarian Mission |
FPC members Larry and Courtney Sharrett, our missionaries to Bulgaria through Athletes in Action, will give an update on their work Thursday, January 3, at 7:00 p.m. in the chapel. During each of the past two summers, they have led "reverse mission trips" to the US for Bulgarian professional basketball players. Several members of FPC have been involved in these outreaches. You will need to pack a sleeping bag (or sheets and a blanket), a pillow, a towel, toiletries, ear plugs, work clothes and gloves, and comfortable shoes. Please let Dave Welch know if you are willing to drive your car; we will pay for the gas.
Scholarships are available. If you have any questions, please contact Dave at dwelch@fpcristol.org. |

Children's Ministries News
Dirty Jobs of Bethlehem |
In Kids' Kirk, we are learning about the "Dirty Jobs of Bethlehem." This Sunday and next, folk who worked at some of those dirty jobs will visit us and give us their perspective on the birth of a child in the stable.
We will hold Kids' Kirk at both the early and the late service on December 23 and 30. Come join us as we look at the Christmas story through different eyes:
December 23, "Proclaim the News." We will meet a shepherd who sleeps out at night with his dirty sheep, often sleeping across the entrance to the sheepfold to keep the flock in and the wild animals out. Imagine the dark, quiet night suddenly illuminated by an angel!
December 30, "Worship the King." We will meet a camel keeper and hear about the hard work of loading and unloading the camels and getting them enough to drink. The wise men the camels carry have to make a decision after finding the baby. |
Wednesday Night Kids Finish Semester Creatively |
Our children ended the fall semester
 | | Detail of Creation Tower. |
with a feast, a tower, and gingerbread houses. They began building a seven-level tower in mid-August to illustrate God's careful planning of creation. Each level of the tower represents a day in the familiar creation story from the first chapter of Genesis. On December 5, they unveiled their tower in the Fellowship Hall.
After dinner, they celebrated with a Creation Feast in the Children's Wing. They enjoyed a firmament of cookies, a rainbow of fruit, candied mice, fish crackers, a forest

of broccoli, and a blue Jell-O ocean with fish. They washed down bug cupcakes with blue ocean water. All the while they celebrated God's plan for creation and his plan for his children.
Building a gingerbread house concentrates the mind wonderfully. And when i t's finished, you can enjoy the fruits of your labor! |

Bristol Faith in Action Needs More Flu Fighters |

Bristol Faith in Action urgently needs more flu season care kits to distribute to families in need. Many items that promote health and cleanliness cannot be purchased with food stamps. Among these are disinfectant wipes, hand sanitizer, germ-killing sprays, and tissues. The Evangelism & Outreach Committee asks the FPC family to collect such care kits, or items for them, over the next several weeks. Please bring your donations to the church and place them in the gray bin under the steps in the Music Wing. Thank you! |
From Steve & Vicki Fey Music Notes | |
Music participants: December 23: Sanctuary Choir; Christmas Eve: Sanctuary Choir, Jubilate Youth Choir plus alumni, Young Men's Ensemble, Instrumental Ensemble; December 30: Rachel Barker, soloist.
Sunday's music and beyond: This Sunday, the Sanctuary Choir anthem is an arrangement of the Advent hymn, "Come, Thou Long Expected Jesus," and one of the tunes with which it is frequently sung, Stuttgart. The text was written in 1744 by Charles Wesley (1707-1788) for a collection of nativity hymns; about the text Carlton Young has said: "The central themes in Wesley's hymn are Hebraic messianic expectation-long-expected freedom, release, rest, and consolation, and hope-and Christian fulfillment of that expectation in the birth of a child whose birth brought and continues to bring deliverance from the bondage of sin for the whole human family and establishment of God's gracious reign in our hearts." The musical arrangement of the hymn tune is by Kenton Coe (b. 1931). In the first stanza the melody is obscured, but as the piece continues, the familiar tune becomes more apparent and by the fourth stanza it is unmistakable; this revelation matches the revelation of Christ coming into our world.
| | Rachel Barker |
For our Christmas Eve service, the Sanctuary Choir will offer two anthems, the Jubilate Youth Choir and the Young Men's Ensemble will sing, several violin duets will be played, and an instrumental ensemble of youth and adults will play as part of the many Christmas carols sung in the service. On Sunday, December 30, Rachel Barker, formerly a King College student scholarship choir member and currently a professional musician, will sing.
Rehearsal reminders: After a full season of Advent and Christmas music, the various music ensembles will have a brief break. The Sanctuary Choir will not rehearse December 26, and will have the Sunday off from worship leadership on December 30, resuming rehearsals Wednesday, January 2. Cherub Choir and Jubilate Youth Choir resume Sunday, January 13. Children's Handbells, Youth Handbells, and Savior's Singers Children's Choir resume Wednesday, January 16, as does the regular Wednesday evening program. Sanctuary Bells will meet again Monday, January 14. Thanks to one and all for a blessed Advent and Christmas season of music making! |
