Step 3 of 5 to Increase IQ

Step 3 - Processing
Step 3 is to improve auditory processing and visual processing. This is quite different from hearing and seeing, which primarily involve the ears and the eyes. Processing through the senses primarily involves the brain. Each of perceives information through our senses, but as the world has so much to offer to each of our senses, our brains engage in order to process and desensitize the huge amounts of information sent to us.

For example, when you are in a crowded room, you can hear the voices of everyone around you, but (unless you have an auditory processing disorder), you ignore the words of everyone except the person with whom you are talking. This is an example of the difference between hearing and processing. The same is true for the other senses.

The most important senses for learning are hearing and seeing. School, job, and life could be very difficult if we did not perceive what was given to us well. A person who is hypersensitive to sound can hear extremely well, but may be labeled as ADHD because she cannot pay attention to only the teacher. If someone is hypersensitive to visual information, he could also have the label because his visual system cannot easily filter out visual information that is not necessary. Hence, "Squirrel!"

The sensory system is set up during the first year of life, as the baby goes through stages of development and integrates the primitive reflexes. When starting therapy to improve IQ, always start at this step before going on to Step 3, auditory and visual processing. We need to have the brain set up in order for the following therapies to work well and stick.

The videos below go into each system a little more. Please feel free to share these with others, so that our parents and educators can more fully understand what the issues are when faced with a person who struggles with sensory processing.

What to do:
To improve auditory processing, you can do a listening program. They range in price and quality, but all strive to improve the ability to process auditory information. While it is always best to work with a professional who can individualize the therapy, sometimes that is not an accessible solution for you. So here are some options in order by accessibility:

Apps: EASe on iTunes  and others
Accessible on-line: The Listening Program
Accessible by provider to do at home or school: The Listening Program, Therapeutic Listening, Integrated Listening Systems, Sound Therapy International
Clinic based: Integrated Listening Systems, Tomatis, AIT

To improve visual processing, there are also many choices.
There are several apps that work to improve eyesight or train your vision
Accessible on-line: Eye Can Learn, Eye Q Advantage
Clinic based: Vision therapy

By the end of Step 3, the brain and body are now developed and ready for Step 4, which will be in next week's newsletter!

If you are looking for an entire curriculum that includes this plus the next 3 steps to improving IQ, look at Growing Brains Everyday, which is on sale this month.
