Sustained Focus

Excerpt From "The Roadmap From Reading Failure to Success"

By Kathy Johnson, MS Ed

Do you have a student who can read pretty well for a short period of time, but cannot sustain it? After a paragraph or two, a person with problems sustaining focus stops reading well. They may act like they are bored with the story, or that it doesn't hold their interest. Yet, after a good break from visual tasks, or after doing "eye palming" (see below), they are able to read for another short period of time.

This is difficult to diagnose without having the student read out loud for a significant period of time. An optometrist may not catch it because the student has good acuity for long enough to answer the questions about which is better: 1 or 2; 3 or 4.

To test the student, pick an appropriate book that is at the reading level of the person. Set a timer for 10 minutes, and observe. Note all of the following:

  • Rubbing eyes
  • Tearing eyes
  • Excessive blinking
  • Cannot read as well as was able to in the beginning
  • Gives up
  • Makes excuses

What to do?

First, in the short term, teach the student to do eye palming:

  • Rub the hands vigorously against each other until the palms are hot.
  • Cup them to make a cave.
  • Place the hands over the eyes in such a way that they eyes are open in the cave, but the cave is black.
  • Breathe deeply and rest in the cave for 30 seconds.
  • Repeat as necessary.

For the long term, the student may need to do vision therapy. An evaluation by a behavioral or developmental optometrist is necessary to see if vision therapy is needed or would be advised for this student. To find such a doctor, go to www.covd.org or www.optometrists.org.

You Can Check Your Vision Online

Take part in the ZEISS Online Vision Screening Check

Our eyes are our most important sensory organ. This is why optimal vision is so important. However, many people do not have their eyes checked regularly, which is key to ensuring optimal vision. 100 years of better vision with ZEISS - 100 years of high-quality precision eyeglass lenses and for innovations in optics. Use the ZEISS Online Vision Screening Check to obtain a quick and simple vision check and a recommendation if a professional eye test at a optometrist or an ophthalmologist is necessary.

Check your vision online

Better vision also means more quality of life, as sight is our most important sense organ. 80 percent of the impressions we receive of our environment are obtained through our eyes. Having our eyes regularly tested by an eye care professional should be an integral part of preventive health care. In general, provided we do not have any existing or known eye problems, we should have an eye test once every two years. The ZEISS Online Vision Screening Check will provide you with an initial idea of the current performance of your eyes.

The Online Vision Screening check is divided into three parts:

  1. Visual Acuity Check
  2. Contrast Vision Check
  3. Colour Vision Check
