 Dear All,
Today we step back a bit and look at math.
Do you know someone who struggles in math? Success in math requires so many components to be working well that it is not surprising how many people claim that they are not good at it. Take a look at this list:
- Math anxiety can cause a person to freeze up when attempting to look at numbers
- Selective visual attention problems cause some people to have trouble dealing with many math problems on the page, frequently overlooking some in the middle by mistake
- Dyscalculia: according to the Learning Disabilities Association, dyscalculia is a learning disability with the following difficulties:
- Conceptualizing place value, number lines, positive and negative value, carrying and borrowing, and others
- Understanding word problems
- Sequencing information or events
- Step by step procedures in math operations
- Understanding fractions
- Making change and handling money
- Recognizing patterns in simple math
- Explaining math processes
- Understanding time
- Organizing problems on the page, keeping numbers lined up
- Following through on long division problems
Over the next few weeks, I will address parts of this academic challenge called Math. Do you have questions about math that I can help you with and address in this newsletter? Please write to me at kjohnson@pyramidofpotential.com. I will answer them in the upcoming newsletters, and provide you with some actual activities to improve all of these areas that affect math success.
Have a great week, Kathy Johnson |
