Reading Comprehension
January 17,  2014

I went to see "Dislecksia The Movie" last week, and it is definitely a must see! The movie was created by Harvey Hubbell, who is dyslexic. The movie contains interviews with famous people who are also dyslexic, gives many facts about it and generally helps people see that it is possible to have a great life, even if a person struggle with learning differences. Go to http://www.dislecksiathemovie.com/ to see the trailer and to get a schedule of where it is to be shown next.

There are many different causes of reading struggles.  Today I will focus on what specifically can cause difficulties in comprehension.

First of all, decoding must be fluent. If it is not, and if the person reading is slow and must stop frequently to sound out words, he or she loses track of the thoughts. Besides the ability to decode, fluency requires sustained attention and good processing speed. Slow readers simply forget what was going on, and this is especially bad if they have low working memory. So, don't expect comprehension to be good before decoding is. If someone NEEDS to comprehend some passages, read to them. It's the kindest thing you can do.

Next is tracking. When they read a line across a page, some people's eyes jump over words or parts of words. Or when going to the next line, they jump over a line or stay on the same line. This is an issue I used to have. Because of this, I would lose the train of thought and would end up reading paragraphs multiple times. Needless to say, I was a slow reader. If this is happening, use a finger or bookmark to keep place, try colored overlays and consider vision therapy.

What about vocabulary? If a person has a poor vocabulary, it can greatly affect comprehension of course! I had a student who got to the point where she decoded well, but her vocabulary was very low. Being in 6th grade, she needed to fill up that bucket quickly, so I did not ask her to look up words in a dictionary. That would slow down the process, and besides, at her age, she probably would not do it! Instead, I told her to simply ask me or her parents for the definition of any word she did not know so that she could learn new words quickly.

Low logic and reasoning is what can cause the concrete thinker to have trouble with understanding books at the fourth grade level and beyond. At this point, many books include symbolism, similes and metaphors which mean nothing. To improve these you can use workbooks on logic from www.mindware.com, or consider a whole brain training product, like The Academic Success Workbook, which is on sale this month. Go to http://www.pyramidofpotential.com/products-for-parents.

Finally, there is visualization - the ultimate key. If all of the above is fine, and in many cases it is, then what can go wrong is that the person does not have good visualization skills. Ask them to describe their bedroom or their pet, something they should know quite well. If they cannot, it may be because they cannot see a picture of it in their head, and so can't access that information. You can teach visualization using a whole brain product once again.

The Pyramid of Potential Academic Success Workbook is an excellent choice, since it includes so many exercises to help overcome the areas where things can go wrong with comprehension: working memory, attention and processing speed needed for fluency and visualization. http://www.pyramidofpotential.com/products-for-parents is where to go!

It may seem overwhelming to address reading comprehension, but that is the ultimate goal of picking up a book. The final result is worth it!
