Maintaining Your Brain
January 9, 2014
|
As we get older, our brain changes. No doubt about that. We see our body changing, too. If you are over 40, you may notice that your eyesight is no longer as sharp. I noticed this when I was increasing the wattage of all my light bulbs to 100!!
You may also notice other changes - increased anxiety over silly things, memory lapses where they weren't before and simply processing more slowly. Your body doesn't bounce back as quickly from injury, you don't sleep as well at night, and you may even need to use the bathroom in the middle of the night, which doesn't help!
Well, these things don't have to slow you down. You can improve your brain and body at any time of your life! I am now in my late 50s, but I have been working on improving my brain and body during the last 15 years, and I swear, I keep getting better!
Last year I slowly trained my body until I could walk across 222 miles across New York State in just 12 days (with occasional days off). I was inspired by people just like you and me, who have taken a challenge and decided to complete it.
Several years ago I "integrated the primitive reflexes" and found that my attention improved and my listening was so much better that I stopped saying "what" all the time. For the first time in my life, I could remember people's names without even trying, and I stopped needing to make those awful trips in the middle of the night.
What does it take to make changes in the brain or body when you reach "middle age" or beyond? It takes daily exercise. If you want to improve your body, you need to do daily physical exercise, like walking or weights. Start wherever you are currently at, and slowly increase. Be sure to check with your doctor, too!
Eat well to protect your brain and body, and use your mind in new ways daily, like Sudoku or Crossword puzzles.
Research shows that if you walk daily, you can improve memory! So, even physical exercise can improve your mind. The primitive reflexes creep back in as we age, too. We should be doing these exercises for 10 minutes a day, every day. As long as we continue to do them, the improvements stick! To read about them, go to https://www.facebook.com/notes/pyramid-of-potential/primitive-reflexes-general-information/10152126621586265
You can get an inexpensive DVD with these exercises on them by going to http://www.pyramidofpotential.com/products-for-parents/.
