The Importance of the Moro Reflex
December 12, 2013

The following is a transcript of an email conversation between me and a mom who is learning about the reflexes and who wanted to understand how they work and where they come from:

Q: What constitutes "change" after doing 30 days of a module? From where are you getting most of your protocols?   Specifically, can you point to the source that suggests 30 days is recommended for change to happen?

A: I was taught by Sam Berne, a developmental optometrist from Santa Fe, that the protocol is for a period of time, and that what I am looking for are cognitive changes.  For example, if there is a retained Moro reflex, and the child has anxiety and hypersensitivity, I look for some change in one of those areas. I don't look for perfection, or we may never finish the program! The 30 days is based on the theory of brain changes - long term learning and habits - and since the exercises do the opposite of the reflex, the reflex integrates at the same time as new connections are made.

Q: Okay.... So that leads me to part two of question one.  Since you're not looking for perfection, some positive change (less anxiety) is proof we're working in the right direction.  I can't remember if I read in your curriculum that doing some of these exercises for LIFE isn't a bad idea (as we all need it to some degree or another throughout seasons in our lives).  But barring any injuries to the brain, those changes are permanent even after stopping the exercises?

A: Yes, they are permanent barring TRAUMA. Trauma can be injury, a life-long disease like Mitochondria Disease or daily abuse. Also, it can be ARD - Age Related Decline - so once we reach age 40, to stop declining in some areas, we have to continue doing the integration exercises daily.   The same goes for people with other daily trauma. So otherwise, once the 30 days is up and changes are seen, the exercises can be stopped.

Q: And since we're creating new neural pathways, and hopefully more efficient ones, will they continue to get stronger/larger with use?

A: Yes

Q: One question I've always had lingering, but never knew who to ask... Why didn't the brain just make these connections/pathways the first time around?

A: The first time around:  it could be that the mother was under stress or had a retained Moro reflex causing her to release cortisol and adrenalin throughout the pregnancy. This, in turn, causes chemical changes to the body of the infant.  But, I have found that older children can in fact integrate their reflexes just as quickly and easily despite this. For other children it was because they were not allowed the chance to integrate because they were contained in some way. It could be as extreme as being in an orphanage without being allowed out of the crib, or as innocuous as us moms being good moms and not putting their children on their tummies so they don't get SIDS, or not putting them on their backs so they done spit up and aspirate.  They were doing the best they could and kept them safe in front packs, swings and walkers. Actually what they needed was to be on the floor. This may not cause the Moro to be retained, but more of some of the other reflexes. Also, since the Spinal Galant is used by the infant to work his way down the birth canal, it is possible that a C-section may contribute to a retained Spinal Galant.

Q: If you want to just point me to some more technical reading to answer my questions, that's fine.  I find this stuff very fascinating.

A: I, too, am still fascinated by all of this, and continue to research and find answers.

Q:  Have you read any of Svea Gold's work and if so, what is your opinion?

A: Much of my work is based on Svea Gold's! She is brilliant.

Q: Thanks for your replies.

A: You are so welcome!!
